The Hall is best known for its collection of enormous commemorative Horseshoes donated by members of the Royal Family and Peers of the Realm. It is also decorated with a range of 12th century sculptures. The grounds of the Castle are a peaceful oasis in the centre of Oakham. We came across the castle by chance and found it well worth stopping. Interesting history and learning about how it was used. Free parking for a couple of hours is a bonus.

We were already in Oakham so paid a visit to the castle, no, it’s not a castle now as so many people pointed out, but it WAS a castle and you can clearly see how it would have been a castle.
I wouldn’t go out of my way to come here for a visit but if you’re in the area it’s worth popping in. We maybe spent about half an hour here, it would be nice to bring a picnic.
It’s free! It’s pretty! It’s historical! The lady working there was really nice, we learnt a lot and we found it really interesting.

Not at all what I expected. Very interesting, but does not take long to view. It is free to view and dogs are allowed inside. Park in Oakham and take a wander.

Not a lot left of the castle but the great hall. This has a fascinating history which is clearly explained if you have a guided tour.

Not a great deal to see while it obviously has been a castle there is next to nothing there and not worth traveling any great distance to see
