“We are still talking about this meal and how lovely this restaurant is”
Reviewed 24 May 2009

We went to this local restaurant for my husbands birthday. Nicola and the girls were very friendly when we arrived, and we settled down on the couches to have a pre-dinner drink and to peruse the menu. We ordered Avocado Mousse, Seafood Gratin, and were shown to our table just before it was ready. The presentation was superb, and we were not disappointed by the taste either!
For main course we had Fillet of beef, all cooked perfectly despite 3 different requests, and the Guinea Fowl was delicous. Normally we wouldn't have desert but we couldnt resist the cheese platter, the pecan cheesecake and the mille fueille of strawberry with mango and lime. Small requests were accomodated with a big smile and speedily dealt with. Service was perfect, we didnt feel rushed, or ignored even though the restaurant was full.
Topped off by a birthday plate for my husband, beautifully presented, we have already booked to go again, and can only wonder why it has taken us so long to discover a hidden jewel in our own back yard so to speak.
Cannot recommend more highly, than to say, forget the Chewton Glen, go to Lanes!!

“An excellent dining experience!”
Reviewed 18 May 2009

Lanes is hidden away on a narrow dead end alley, without parking. We suggest parking on the High Street & walking down. The building was formerly a schoolhouse and has a charming atmosphere, with tables on three different levels. The staff were diligent, warm & professional and added to the overall experience. The menu is varied and very interesting. So nice to see some different choices! Our group of four all enjoyed the meal and felt it was well-priced for the high quality provided. Recommend particularly the starter of avocado mousse on hazelnut crust, the main courses of guinea fowl and the lamb cutlet & stuffed noisette. Also enjoyed the strawberry mille feuille with mango and mint syllabub. The food is presented with great care and an imaginative flair. It was an all-around excellent dining experience!

“Well Worth Finding”
Reviewed 1 March 2009

We found Lanes Restaurant by accident on the way to somewhere else for lunch.
It is well hidden down Ashley Lane off the High Street near Elliots store. Well worth finding.
A genuine warm welcome from husband & wife team Peter (chef) and Nicola with a sensible menu - NOT a mega long list of choices which could only come from the freezer & microwave, but something for most people.
They do however have some frozen food - THE ICE CREAM.
As mentioned in other reviews it is home made and has flavours such as - white chocolate, red wine, lavender, coffee & rum & raison. These ice creams are 'to die for' simply the best we have ever had.
Home made breads, starters such as mushroom mouse or advacardo cheesecake & fab soups.
The quality & presentation of the dishes are superb especially the fish dishes.
Its refreshing in this day of chain restaurants and the same menus almost everywhere to find a good quality independent establishment of this high calibre.
I know I have said similar in hotel reviews but this is the UK restaurant we now judge the other restaurants by.
I can`t wait to go again.

“Absolute perfection....”
Reviewed 31 January 2009

We visited Lymington to escape after the New Year - 2nd January to be precise! Clearly, Lymington was quiet with most restautants shut after the Xmas and New Year rushes. We found Lanes by chance on the internet, and are so glad we did.

The restaurant is in an old schoolhouse, that was previously a church many years back. It is run by Peter (chef) and his wife and is fantastic in every respect. We arrived on time to discover that apart from one other diner, we were the only booking for that evening! However after a warm welcome, we were treated to a great evening.

Both Peter and his wife made the evening very special, and the menu was great. Despite the quiet time of year, there were at least two specials for starters and mains to choose from, as well as a very good menu. Great wine, beautifully presented desserts and amazing value.

This is a must if you are in Lymington - we will definitely be back when we are back from Sweden. The outside of the building may not look it, but it houses one of the most beautiful restaurants - go and enjoy for yourself!
