The welcome was excellent, the public rooms and conservatory were lovely - what a shame it went slightly downhill after that.

First of all - be aware that parking is on the opposite side of the road at the back of the shops.

We had a garden terrace room - fab for the dog (who was made very welcome) but seats right outside our window where people were sat smoking and having a lovely time in the sun - and we heard every word!!

The whole room was very 'bland' - cream paint, cream 70s style wardrobe and dressing table and white bed linen....bathroom immaculate.

Food really let this establishment down - our amuse bouche from the chef was what can only be described as cauliflower blancmange, inedible. Worse was to come though with the crab veloute - bright pink puree served in a large soup bowl. My husband said his first mouthful made his stomach turn inside out - totally foul. Beef was gorgeous but lamb was tough. Don't forget to order potatoes or veg as these aren't included with the dish!
Breakfast: the sausage was hot and delicious but the rest of the breakfast had clearly waited for it - lukewarm with definite signs that it had been under the hotplate for a while.

This could have been so good......

We stayed for one night on Bank Holiday Monday and were very pleasantly surprised to be upgraded to a suite with access to the garden. Apart from being spotlessly clean the attention to detail in the room was excellent and decor and furniture perfect. Situated in the centre of lymington close to the Old Quay and lots of interesting walks locally. Freshly cooked breakfast was very good and they even waived the cost of my newspaper, reception staff very friendly and helpful. Overall, thoroughly reccomended.

I was lucky enough to hold my wedding at this wonderful hotel in April. We had a number of guests stay at the hotel and everyone agreed what a great place this is!

The rooms are fantastic, I was lucky enough to stay in the bridal suite, but saw a number of the rooms - number 1 being the favourite, opening out to the garden.

The food was also wonderful. From canapes to the wedding dessert, everything was such a high standard, I've only had positive comments back from all of the guests.

Above all of this though, are the wonderful staff! Nothing was too much trouble and they all made us feel like we were special guests and a part of their big family.

I couldn't recommend Stanwell House enough!

The hotel is easy to find as it is on the main street and is nicely painted with a flag out the front. The reception staff are very friendly as are the restaurant staff, very happy to help with bags, high chairs etc.

You can leave your pushchair down in the corner of the reception out of sight and the way of others. There are steps into the hotel so if you were in a wheelchair I would imagine you'd have to request help.

There is no lift to the top floor rooms which we had, which is fine but at the end of a long day out sightseeing with the little ones it's a bit of a tiring hike!

The Z bed we had for my 5 year old was placed at the end of the bed which is normal, it left no room to get around the main bed.It also kept collapsing at one end, which made us nervous about little fingers getting trapped.

The hot water kept going off while in the shower, also in the mornings and (I don't know because I didn't ask) but I don't think it's turned on until 6am and then when it's on it dribbles out, the shower is very dated and has ZERO power.

Our room faced the street, the noise is minimal though.

Breakfast is lovely and is a good size. In the evening we sat out in the garden to have our dinner, the children ( 5,3 & 7 months) were able to get up and move about without disturbing other diners.

We were told there was parking, there was none, and we ended up parking 1km away which they give you a card for so you don't have to pay. It's a real pain when you have children and luggage, you can park on the street for 1 hour if you need to unload. We found a small car park on gosport street & parked there much better!

Out the back of the hotel is I think newer rooms, however these are located next to the gardens and restaurant so could be nosier, but might have a better shower!

This Hotel sits itself on the parapet of perfection, therefore, when things aren't quite perfect, it stands out....and is annoying.
Moldy wet bathrooms, waiting staff not listening or sharing information with each other or the kitchen.
Staff not quite as perfect as the establishment. Whilst efficient and friendly, not quite portraying the 'yes' attitude.
Promises pre-booking not kept.
Shame. Could be perfect. But not quite....
The food, however was indeed quite perfect!!!!!!

We booked a two night stay with dinner on the first night for £300 in Room 29, the bridal suite, as it was a special treat for our 10th wedding anniversary. When booking, I was advised that the room had not been refurbished as recently as the 'garden rooms' on the website, and reading some other reviews I did wonder what condition the room would be in. However, we were both delighted with the size of the suite and the quality and condition of the decor and furnishings. The roof terrace was useful for getting some fresh air although the noise from the kitchen extractor fan was a bit distracting for relaxing out there (this didn't cause a problem for us). The bathroom was amazing, with a large shower cubicle and a deep double ended bath. A wide selection of quality teas was provided and fresh milk was available on request. Being at the back of the hotel, we didn't experience any noise from the High Street.

However, what really impressed us was the service - both at reception and in the restaurants. Always efficient and helpful, yet sincere, not OTT. We completed a questionnaire when we left and that evening we received a personal reply from the manager with details of how a couple of minor niggles were being addressed.

The evening meal we had at the restaurant was very good. Admittedly we don't do fine dining except at anniversaries but we know good food when we have it.

The location was ideal for us - we like being close to shops, and it's just a short walk to the quay or the railway station. Parking wasn't an issue as we managed to get a space in the reserved section of the Cannon Street car park.

Overall, very impressive and we hope to back next year for our anniversary again. I can't face going to a bland Hilton-like hotel again!
