“A Central hotel with Good food and staff.”
Reviewed 3 July 2014

We attended as a result of an offer in the Waitrose magazine - bargain offers are not always a bargain but this was a bargain. The accommodation was good and the old building well adapted for use as a hotel. The car park is small so early arrival is an advantage. the room was a good size and the bed comfortable. The staff was friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was satisfactory to good. May be a little over priced if paying the full rack rent but not enough to prevent a return - something we intend to do.

I booked this hotel for my husbands birthday, also our first hotel stay with 11 week old baby.

Arrived before check in to make the most of the day, found a space in the hotel parking and staff gave us a ticket for the car no problem. Had not previously advised we were staying with a baby as the website advised no charge etc. but having seen the baby when we enquired about parking, when we eventually checked in a travel cot had been put in the room! We didn't use it but a nice touch.

We stayed in a suite with a garden which was at the back of the hotel. I think this is a dog friendly room but beware the garden is not secure as leads back to the hotel. The garden area was lovely and peaceful and the room was clean and bright, very comfortable bed! The garden area was shared with one other room.

We ate in the seafood restaurant looking onto the high street and later had deserts in the conservatory. The food was great, I highly recommend the White Chocolate Brûlée! Presentation and service were excellent.
We booked the restaurant early as we were wary of other diners being put off by the baby however he was very quiet and as he's too small for a high chair the staff offered to take him whilst we ate (I declined but what a lovely offer!).

Breakfast was also lovely, great service and hot food cooked to order.

All in all a great stay, will definitely be returning!

Excellent room with its own garden terrace , friendly staff who made a real effort to make us welcome great food ,especially the breakfast.
Had a really good long weekend , the sun even came out , the only minor problem is the small car park , which fills up very quickly
We would definitely come again - thank you all

We visited this hotel recently for a short break of three nights, such a pretty town on the
seafront, ferries to Isle of Wight, great shopping town so much to do. The hotel from the high street is very impressive, once inside the beautiful conservatory area offers you great seating for lovely afternoon teas or glass wine. Garden area small but very well maintained. We upgraded for a suite which was clean but decor and furniture was dark, bathroom small but well cared for, we had a balcony which had two black metal chairs round black table and decking, it needed some TLC maybe a few potted plants, metal rails needed paint, absolutely beautiful space to have. On arrival we had afternoon tea complimentary with our package absolutely beautiful in presentation and taste. After shower we went to very small bar for pre dinner drinks before going to fish restaurant for dinner, disappointed, fish was nice but did not like what it was served with, the staff were nice and friendly always helped us with our questions. The breakfast was lovely and the tables were dressed impressively, staff greeted us with a smile. Parking could be tricky only have 12 parking spaces but close to town parking. This hotel has some extremely lovely features but we did not like the evening menus lunch and breakfast fine, if we ever went back we would go bed and breakfast

Room Tip: bewarie of garden rooms they lead out onto patio area where people sit and eat outside

This was our 2nd visit to this hotel and we were not disappointed,

We went on 14th June for two nights, (one of which my birthday, but they did not know this) we booked hotel as so dog friendly. Upon arrival I was lucky enough to me meet by the manager when I expressed my disappointment we were not able to eat dinner in the conservatory with our dog (wedding party had booked whole area) . He sorted straight away & gave us table in the fish restaurant.

2nd night the wedding party did make lots of noise and we had girls in the room next to us making lots of noise. No fault of the hotel at all. To cut a long story short the manage came over to me in the morning to apologise & offered us dinner on the house. They had no idea it was my birthday but the service was amazing, not sure they could have done anymore

Thank you to all the staff that made our stay so special

We have stayed at this hotel before and it was lovely & love the fact it is so dog friendly. Shame a wedding party takes over the whole place, but they did manage it very well.

For our Wedding Anniversary my husband found this wonderful 'pet friendly' hotel.
Having a Newfoundland, beware, often when they say 'pet friendly' they mean a pet less than a stone in weight BUT not the Stanwell. Not only were we greeted warmly into this beautifully decorated Hotel, but Charley, our 11st7lb Newfoundland, was treated like royalty.
Our room opened on to the terrace and Charley was welcome in all areas except their main restaurant, which we totally respected and indeed appreciated.
There are lots of charming areas, within the gardens/terrace, so we could always find shade to enjoy coffee and breakfast, stunningly presented (that tasted as good) for us and for Charley to enjoy his sliced New Forest Sausage (hand fed by the staff!).
Our room wasn't compromised by having a dog and was beautifully clean and equipped with everything you'd expect in a 5 star hotel (but is often lacking)!
The staff, without exception, were professional, friendly and couldn't do enough for us.
We would definitely recommend The Stanwell House and will also go back again.

We stayed for one night for our Wedding Anniversary. We managed to get the last space in the car park which was a bonus as reading other reviews we thought parking might be a problem, but we were prepared to pay to park anyway. The setting of the Hotel is stunning, in a beautiful pot on the High Street. On checking in we were advised we had been upgraded to a suite at the back of the Hotel overlooking the garden which was another bonus. The suite was lovely and very 'boutique' which it's own little sitting room with TV. Lovely bathroom with bath and double walk in shower. We treated ourselves to a pamper session at Pure, right opposite the hotel. I had a pedicure and my hubby a back massage. Then we returned to the Hotel for afternoon tea!. Scrummy! The first indication of the quality of food, we had also booked for dinner in the Bistro and again were delighted with the selection and quality of food on the Table D'hôte menu. I couldn't fault the hotel at all. And was expecting staff problems after reading other reviews, but was pleasantly surprised with the attentive staff from Marilyn on reception to the waiting staff in the Bistro. Can't wait to return for another first class break. Thank you Stanwell House. Hotel :)

Room Tip: Can recommend the suites at the back overlooking the beautiful gardens.
