“I would go again.”
Reviewed 4 August 2009

Having had a very stressful time of late we chose Stanwell house from the internet just to get away for a couple of days. On arrival the staff were very kind and helpful and the room was beautiful which, straight away, put us at our ease. I 'loved' the little bennie dog 'do not disturb' toy.
We unfortunatly, didn't have good weather but, that didn't matter to much as we were right in the middle of town and had shops to look round. Quaint little shops that you don't see many other places. A great pub over the road' The Angel' Very good Guiness!
Evening and the Hotel Resteraunt didn't dissapoint, we had a fabulouse meal of Chicken,me and Lamb, my husband, super puds then coffee and cocktails to finnish, all made better by the friendly staff who looked after us.

We had an overnight stay at Stanwell House and were very pleased with the overall experience. The location of the hotel is excellent, right on the High Street and everything on the doorstep. The entrance to the hotel is very inviting with flagstone floors, a pleasant sitting area for drinks and restaurant rooms off the main entrance area. The room we had was nicely furnished in the garden wing but the windows let in very little air and it was extremely hot overnight. The bathroom was OK, newly refurbished but it looked as though it had retained the old toilet, bath etc. The gardens were very nice and of a summer evening, a pleaant place to have a drink. I can sympathise with the reviewer who said about the wedding as if I had been given the room I had overlooking the garden when there was a wedding going on with guests drinking outside my window I would have hit the roof.
The breakfast was outstanding and all freshly cooked and plentiful. We didn't eat at the hotel in the evening but strolled down to the Ship Inn on the Quay. The Ship is a very nice Gastropub with lovely outside seating overlooking the sea and serving great food.
Lymington is a delightful town and the Stanwell House a delightful hotel. I would stay there again without question and the overall experience wasn't spoiled by the few short comings.

We arrived at Stanwell House and were very pleased with what we saw. Room was lovely, hotel was lovely and staff were very friendly. Would throughly recommend afternoon tea on the patio in the sun!
Had room service one morning which was great and enjoyed a lovely breakfast on the terrace the next.
Room was compact and bijou - very clean except for bedspread which was soon removed. Only bad thing about the room was it was very hot due to the hotel being an old building and the windows being fairly rubbish for air flow. That would be my only complaint about the whole experience.
Great location for seeing the New Forest . Lymington is nice with good range of shops, not very much in the way of restaurants outside the hotel - The Ship Inn wasnt great.

we stayed at this hotel once before midweek and decided to ring up on the spur of the moment to see if there was availability for an overnight stay. We were told that there was a four poster room available only as there was a wedding on. Upon arrival we were informed that the Bistro area and the conservetory were out of bounds due to the wedding. Our room was to the front of the building with a four poster bed which was very hard and uncomfortable and the room extemely hot. We booked in for dinner and for some unknown reason only one waitress was able to take orders even though there were three members of staff working in the restaraunt. The food was excellent and the tasting menue of deserts was delicious. The aforementioned wedding was in full flow at the back of the hotel when we retired to bed around 11 pm. At 12 pm we were subjected to the wedding party who had moved into the public bar area (beneath our room)singing at great volume till eventuall at 2pm I rang reception to ask when the bar would close so we could actually get some sleep, some-one on the other end said they would find out and cut off the phone, The singing stopped but the level of noise did not decrease and finally all went quiet at 4pm so by this time we were exhausted and had it not been for the fact that we hadsome wine with dinner so were unable to drive we would have left there and then. when we complained the next day the receptionist said she had told us there was a wedding on! I was amazed that she looked put out when I pointed out that we had paid £140 for the privillage of being disturbed for half the night. I then informed her that I had lost a ring in the room and could she let me know if they found it there was no questions of what type of ring etc. just a sullen yes in reply. We would not stay at this hotel again and would advise if theres a wedding on a Saturday check carefully where the room is

We recently used the hotel as a venue for our wedding reception, with only minor reservations the experience was great. A couple of planning meetings with event co-ordinator Annette & restaurant manager Yannuk had the whole thing planned - their experience, and gentle guidance was much appreciated. Written confirmation, including costings was returned quickly.
A trial meal in the sea food restaurant was OK, although one of the waitresses was on the sharp side of abrupt.
On the day everything was fine, good food, good atmosphere and willing help from the dedicated staff lead by young Lucie. We chose to have a mixed barbeque menu - it was great to see the enthusiasm of the chefs performing just for us..
There are, as always, a couple of negatives - the basic hotel building is quite old, and has been inventively altered, expanded and adapted. Unfortunately this has meant that there are many access compromises. Our party included a number of people with mobility issues who struggled to cope with the various steps and entrances between the different rooms. The staff (and other guests) helped enthusiastically to the best of their ability, but this is not an easy hotel for the wheelchair user. There is no easily accessible toilet for instance.
Overall 91/2 out of 10. Good location, reasonable facilities, good food and helpful staff.

My wife & I stayed here in the Spring. We stayed in 2 different rooms over the course of our 3 night stay - due to some sort of mix up with our booking. This hotel has a lot of potential but unfortunately its presently unrealised due to lack of spending on its upkeep. Its too expensive for what you get. Its a bit grubby & frayed at the edges. The modern built rooms at the back of the hotel have bad sound insulation - you can hear what is going on the rooms on each side. The room we stayed in at the front had windows that didn't fit that well (again lack of spending on maintenance) & the traffic noise is too loud. On the plus side - the staff are pleasant & helpful

Recently spent a lovely Sunday night at the hotel, and took advantage of their great Dinner, Bed and Breakfast rate. Having never been to Lymington before, we weren't sure what to expect, but we were not disappointed in any way. Hotel is great, staff are very friendly and efficient and the room we had (garden terrace room) was superb. We ate in the restaurant on the Sunday evening - full marks to the chef for cooking such wonderful food, and the taster plate dessert is a must!! Wow! Can't wait to return.
