Pheasant Cottage
Reviewed 3 November 2013

This property was advertised as being suitable for 4-6 people so we had anticipated a reasonably sized place for our party of 4. The photos were also shot in such a way as to make the rooms look fairly large. We were therefore dismayed, on arrival, to find the 'cottage' to not be a cottage at all, but rather a converted garage (retaining an authentic double garage appearance) next to the car park of the main Leyland country house B&B, which was distinctly 'cosy' inside I.e. featuring the absolute minimum number and size of rooms that would be considered acceptable for two couples. Thank goodness we were not a party of 6.

Internally the place was fitted out to a reasonably high standard, albeit with something of an Ikea show home feel. However the kitchen was not particularly well suited to self catering and so we could only assume the rooms were often used on a B&B basis. The only sharp knife was bent and about as sharp as a rolling pin, there were just two stand alone ceramic burners, and there was no oven - just a combo microwave-convection unit which would only cook a single dish - not great if you had any intention of cooking more sophisticated oven based meals e.g. roasts. There was also a strange mismatch between a number of high quality appliances and some of the cheapest possible crockery and cutlery.

All in all not a great experience especially given the price tag - over £400 for a week in October. We felt this was very steep in view of the above. We were also expected to clean the place up at the end of the week (via a fairly draconian notice left in the kitchen) which again seemed a bit much given the price.

Thank you very much for your review on The Cottage. It is very unfortunate you feel it was over priced. You paid £425 for a 7 night stay. Your booking was for 4 adults and a 1 year old baby. This equates to £15 per night per adult, the baby is free. When you think about it this included everything, bed linen, towels, electricity, heating, free tea, coffee and sugar, along with 2 t.v.'s, fully equited kitchen, with a multi-function oven, grill and microwave, which is very easy to use. Is that expensive? I think it is cheaper than a hostel you will find? Did you wish to stay for free....?

The induction hobs are super fast and very easy to use and can be sited anywhere in the kitchen. This is useful if you have small children (as you did) and if you are disabled. We have had 3 incidents with young children relating to the hobs and ovens. We feel this has been a very positive move and everyone else has been thoroughly delighted with the cottage and many re-book at check out.

I do feel on this occasion, you booked the cottage for 7 nights and only used it for 5 nights due to changes at your end, this really has nothing to do with us or what we offer. Yes we do use Ikea products for certain things in the cottage. Maybe if guests refrained from stealing our expensive items we would be delighted to furnish it with top quality items again. However certain guests feel they are not just renting a cottage for a week but they feel they can help themselves to anything they want and take it home with them!

So the moral of the story is to enjoy your rented cottage as it was a snip of a price for 4 people!
Thank you once again for taking the time to review Pheasant cottage.
