“Could do so much better”
Reviewed 24 May 2012

We visited on a time share exchange and did not expect a great deal from this rather tired looking resort. We had wanted to visit various attractions in the New Forest so the location was more important than the actual resort. First impressions were that we were too young as we are only in our mid fifties!
After being directed across the grounds to the time share reception, we were speedily checked in and pointed towards our lodge, the ground floor of a block of maisonettes with uninterrupted views over the lawns sloping down to the estuary. Tip - the top floor units have better views and you don't have people walking over your head!
The apartment was surprisingly well furnished and equipped - particularly the flat screen TV and internet/entertainment facilities. The latter are well worth the tiny fee of less than £10 per week. However, be aware that the wireless signal is interrupted when the Isle of White ferry passes across the view. The kitchen was well equipped although the knife set was dangerously blunt - an accident waiting to happen.
The bedrooms were adequate but the furniture could do with being better positioned as it was only to easy to walk into the chest of drawers in the main bedroom due to lack of space. With no real sunlight reaching into the apartment, we found it necessary to keep the electric heating on for most of the time we were in the apartment. This proved to less expensive than we thought.
The real downside was the bathroom which was very dated and could do with a complete make-over.
On site, the spa and swimming pool were first class and the adjoining bar/restaurant adequate.
We did not test other facilities as, being March, it was a bit too cold to swim outside or play tennis, etcetera. Avoid the main hotel restaurant as it is totally devoid of any ambiance or quality.
All in all, a relaxing week's stay. A little bit of TLC and money could really improve this resort as the location is fantastic.

Room Tip: Try to rent one of the lodges with uninterrupted views of the marina and ferry.

Hotel layout was different with all the rooms being in chalets but all furnished to a high standard. View was disappointing but lovely quiet hotel. Staff very friendly and helpful although we thought the bar and food prices were on the expensive side. Hotel is within walking distance of Lymington Pier which is very handy for the ferry to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight and a good train service from Lymington Pier to Lymington or Brockenhurst if you wanted to leave the car at the hotel.

The ornately decorated house and large grounds are beautiful. With a well equipped sport and  spa centre.
The hotel portion, I believe, is somewhat of an after thought.

The rooms are set away from the amazing house and comprise of 30-40 chalet style maisonettes! They are set facing each other in a square formation, so there are no views to speak of. Our room (2A) was on the ground floor and was fine, but dated. The bathroom was clean and satisfactory. The sleeping area was old fashion with two horrible granny chairs and a lot of chintz flower pattern. There were a few pieces of wallpaper hanging off the walls and the two net curtains for the full length window were not the same length?! One trailed on the floor and the other was floating some two inches off the ground! And the bed was in fact two beds pushed together. This is shoddy.
It also had a strange kitchenette area which had a household size fridge and the tea/coffee facilities, a sink, work top and 2 stools.  Bit of a waste of space really.

I arranged an afternoon tea for my wife and I & expected great things. But alas when it came out it was a pathetic attempt at best.
Four fingers of poor quality sandwiches which weren't actually on the menu, two raisin scones (not one raison and one plain as described), a tiny portion of cream, no jam, a few sweet fancies (that from my personal experience are bought in frozen trays of 20 and simply defrosted) and a random throw of unwashed grapes. Not a bunch, just two on one plate and four on the other. Also there was no Assam tea as was displayed on the menu but there was Darjeeling which was not on the menu.
It was so poor that we went straight to the reception and complained. And, to be fair to the chap there we were suitably compensated and comments were taken on board.

Good points

Excellent pampering facilities. My wife had a 55 min facial and she loved it. Heated massage bed, fully wrapped in warm towels, declor produce (good apparently) and whilst waiting for the facial to work its magic a little hand and neck rub. Fantastic.

Breakfast is very, very good quality. And there is no end to the refills of tea/coffee, toast etc.

Grounds are stunning. A beautiful building.

Great leisure facilities. Swimming pool, jacuzzi, steam room, sauna & lockers/towels provided free of charge.

Great location for exploring the Solent and New forest.

Bad points

Double bed = two singles pushed together. I hate that.

Rooms are dated with in need of some maintenance (trouser press & speakers in bathroom didn't work)

Brochure described 'wi fi throughout' which turned out to be true, but it's BT open zone which is a pay per use facility. Not free.

Reception is not 24hours. (well they didn't answer me at 11pm)

Don't go for the afternoon tea. Unless they substantially change the ingredients and send their staff to experience a real one then they just won't understand just what it is that they are aiming for.

Dear guest,

Thank you for your review posted on the Trip advisor website. I was sorry to hear that you were expected to stay in our Manor House however our website and other information are clear regarding the accommodation provided “bedrooms are situated in their own courtyard a minute walk from the manor house” and pictures of the accommodation are also available on our website.
Please accept my apologies for the less than satisfactory experience you received on afternoon tea, we have since relaunched our afternoon tea experience and so far the feedback has been outstanding. We will be refurbishing 10 bedrooms before the end of the year including the room you stayed in. I was delighted to hear that your wife really enjoyed her Spa treatment and I have passed on your comments to the Beauty team.
I hope that you will give us another chance to restore your faith in our establishment as I am sure we can demonstrate to you that we can exceed your expectations.
I look forward to welcoming you back to the Resort.

Yours sincerely,

After a disasterous night at the Ormonde House in Lyndhurst we had to find another hotel at very short notice. Luckily the Elmers Court came up trumps. The key difference - Service.
We arrived at 8 am and were immediately given a room by a professional reception manager. The room was available immediately so we could leave our bags and get exploring.
The location is great for Lymington and around, and by booking a dinner bed and breakfast deal there was no stress!
The room was originally made up as a twin but while we were out they converted to a double - again good service! The layout of having the main rooms separate to the older original hotel is one you see quite often in Macdonald hotels and does have the advantage of being quiet.
Food in the restaurant was excellent and the views from the bar down to the river superb. Overall a great experience that rescued what could otherwise have been a disappointing break

We stayed two nights at this hotel in order to explore Lymington, Christchurch and Poole and we really enjoyed the experience. Having the rooms set outside in the grounds is a bit strange, especially when it was raining but the benefit is very generously sized rooms which are nice and comfortable. The grounds of the hotel are really interesting and have great views over the Solent. Breakfast was excellent with a good choice from the buffet and a high quality cooked breakfast. The staff we met were all very friendly and helpful and made for a very pleasant stay.

Most of the rooms here are in separate 2 storey blocks around the grounds - a mixture of motel and time-share - so in early April, it was a cold and frosty journey from our upper floor room down slippery steps and across the grounds to the restaurant or breakfast room.

Bedroom was spacious and well appointed - loads of drawers, bottled water provided, reasonable bathroom, bed quite comfortable.

As part of a group of around 20 on a car tour, we dined in a separate room - where we had been crammed in like sardines to the point that you almost had to take it in turns to lean forward, or cut your food - ludicrous! The food itself was fine and service OK - it was just a shame no-one had had the sense to add a couple of extra tables to the row so we were not shoe-horned in.

Room Tip: If you don't want a long and potentially wet/cold walk to the restaurant, ask about a room in th...
