“Nice country hotel”
Reviewed 29 October 2008

My Mum was in town so my Fiance and I booked a long weekend in The New Forest. We stayed in Manor House 20, which was essentially a large 1 bedroom apartment - very good value for 135 a night (we booked a few days before on laterooms). There was a large bedroom with a king size bed, a large living area with a fold out sofa bed for mum (apparently very comfortable), flat screen tv, electric heater and a fully equipped kitchen. The apartment overlooked beautiful gardens and was very clean and comfortable. We used the leisure centre gym, which was equipped with all the necessary machines (although a little old). Would definitely stay there again (at that price).

  • Liked — Large room and beautiful gardens
  • Disliked — Girl on front reception was a bit "funny" and you had to check-in in a different building (leisure centre), which was annoying

Thank you, for your positive feedback on Trip Advisor. We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay with us. The lodge check in desk was moved to streamline the check in process, and helps our staff to give a more personal check in, especially when the Manor House is full of wedding guests. We very much look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel again in the future.

Booked through Laterooms, this is both a leisure centre, a hotel and a timeshare resort, and if you want to attract people, it would seem sensible to organise a few extra tv channels (other than the basic four plus Sky News), a flat screen tv, and free wi-fi access to bedrooms.
Unfortunately, they don't do this, and the hotel brasserie is a pretty basic dining area reminiscent of a Little Chef.
It's handy for the Lymington ferry to the Isle of Wight, and if you like the New Forest, you get to see lots of ponies.

Thank you, for your feedback on Trip Advisor, it is only through reading these comments that we can continue to improve the facilities here at the Elmers Court.
Whilst we have only a few channels in our bedrooms we do have Sentanta & Sky Sports in our Sails brassiere and we normally show all the major sporting fixtures in there. Wifi is available in the Lobby of the Manor House and the Sails Brassiere and we also have two pay as you surf terminals in the leisure club.
The Sails Brassiere is aimed at being a relaxing venue which serves good quality food in a lovely nice clean environment. Some of our guests prefer the more traditional fine dinning experience that our fine dinning restaurant the Waterford provides.
Once again thank you for your comments and we hope to be able to welcome you back to the hotel in the future.

Recently stayed here for 2 nights. Expectations weren't high after reading the reviews on tripadvisor, but I think if you find out what the hotel has to offer before you get there rather than having unrealistic expectations you are more likely to be happy.

The rooms are a good size, with a dbl bed + 2 smaller bunks. Yes, perhaps it's a little dated and obvoiusly not in the main building but the spa was great & the setting is beautiful.

This is not a cheap option, and the hotel should look to up its game when it charges high prices, but in the location of the New Forest most of the local prices are high.

Only slight criticism was how long we had to wait for the cooked breakfast in the morning, but it was tasty once it arrived.

Thank you, for your positive feedback on Trip Advisor. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us. Elmers Court is continually trying to improve the standards and facilities that we offer our guests, but we are aware that there is always room for improvements.
Breakfast in out Sails Brassiere is aimed at being a relaxing time, and breakfast is cooked fresh to order, this does of course mean that it takes a little longer, but as you say it is tasty once it arrives.
In terms of prices we offer special deals during the Autumn & Winter time, which can be found on our website.
Once again thank you for your comments and we hope to be able to welcome you back to the hotel in the future.

We stayed at Elmers Court for two nights and were very pleased with it. I have to say though that we booked at the last minute and therefore the price was good: £100 per night for a four bedded room (no breakfast). We had a very large room with a double bed and bunk beds in a recess with two TVs (one in main bedroom and the other in the children's). The decor was a little shabby (hole in carpet and wallpaper peeling off in one area) but it was clean and spacious.
The bathroom was clean apart from a very tatty blind above the bath.
We thought the facilities were excellent for the price we paid. Two swimming pools (indoor and outdoor); golf; tennis; gym; billiards etc.
The hotel is set in gorgeous grounds leading down to the Solent.
We enjoyed the live music in the Sails Bar on the Friday night and did not think the drinks were that expensive for a hotel. We stayed up drinking with friends in the guest bar one night until very late and the bar staff could not have been more helpful.
I do agree that the main car park gets very busy but we were directed to another car park at the back of the hotel which had plenty of space.
We were extremely pleased with what we got for the money. Although I can understand that people who paid full price could perhaps expect more.

  • Liked — Good facilities in lovely grounds for a great price.
  • Disliked — Breakfast, if taken, would have cost £15 each!

Suites ok, but no housekeeping. On asking for some we came back to find a seethrough bag of towels plonked on our floor and that was it.

Watch out for 'energy charge' as over 4 days we watched TV, had some toast, used the cooker once and the grill once. £11.55 and an utter old-school rip off.

Suites overlooked car park entrance, where they have a fag bucket so that those wanting a drag outside from a reception or bar gather under you window until god knows what hour making a racket. Absolutely stupid.

Spa should be good, but they have old fashioned headset sockets and no adaptors, despite me asking 4 days running. Steam room and sauna good though.

All in all it has pretentions to be something better and simply does not make it.

Good points - waiting staff in 'Sails' restaurant were good.

  • Liked — Room sizes OK.
  • Disliked — Service, energy charge nonsense.

It would appear that you stayed in one of our Time Share apartments. These as you say do not have daily housekeeping, but a mid week towel change can be arranged if booked in advance. The apartments do also have an energy charge, which is not included in the rates you were quoted; however, this should have been explained to you at the time of booking. Changes to the Law made a few years ago now requires us to provide facilities for the decreasing number of smokers, and we now have a number of terracotta cigarette disposal bins with sand in them which I am sure you will agree is more in keeping with a building of the Manor Houses age.

We do hope that you will come and stay with us again, and that you will see the way that the Hotel & Resort continue to improve.

My husband and I booked a three night stay in an executive room at £188 per night for bed and breakfast. As in another review, I found the website to be misleading about hotel rooms and where they are located and the disappointment started with our arrival. The car park is full of parking reserved for timeshare apartments and we were directed to the area shared with the on-site leisure club (there were no signs indicating where hotel guests should park). Our booking said we could check-in from 2 p.m. on the Friday but on arrival at receiption (which was dominated by a large vase of half-dead lillies, which stayed there at least another 24 hours), we were told we couldn't check in until 3 p,m. The receptionist offered to call our mobile when the room was available - but didn't.

Our room was the main disappointment. We had a ground floor executive room, which turned out to be a dingy room in a chalet. The dressing table, standard lamp, very old television and a sofa were all down one side of the room and there was no light over the mirror, the standard lamp didn't work and the remote control on the television didn't work either. On turning down the bed there were holes in the sheets. In addition the trouser press didn't work.

We gave reception the list of faults on the Friday evening and on the Saturday the remote control was replaced. However the lack of light and holes in the sheets remained. My husband complained again on the Saturday. However by our departure at 10 a.m. on the Monday none of the other problems had been corrected. We mentioned our dissatisfaction to the receptionist, who then presented us with a bill which contained items we hadn't had. She said that we could talk to the manager - but he hadn't arrived yet. We paid our bill and left.

On arrival home I wrote to the customer service department mentioned on the literature and haven't been at all surprised to have received no response at all in the 3 weeks since I wrote.

I agree with others that the hotel management needs to be replaced but, given the head office response - or rather lack of it - we will simply avoid booking in at any Macdonald hotel: there are plenty of other places who know about customer care.

Thank you for your report left on trip advisor, whilst it is not the type of report we like to read, we know that it is only through feedback like this that Elmers Court can continue to improve our standards.

The Macdonald Website is always being updated and improved, and many of the photos that gave the misleading impression that rooms were in the Manor house have now been removed and in their place pictures that show the Courtyard Hotel Bedrooms. We are sorry that you found the parking to be confusing; our Reception staff try to explain things as clearly as possible, but obviously didn’t get it right this time. Whilst there are parking spaces reserved for the Timeshare Apartments, there are ample spare spaces for hotel guests and leisure club members to use.

Macdonald hotels always have fresh flowers on display in the reception area, and these are changed on a regular basis, however during the summer months they sometimes do not last as long as we would like, and it is normal for those to be either refreshed or removed before they look too bad.

Our maintenance and housekeeping team pride them selves on responding to all guest concerns as quickly as possible, however clearly we did not manage that in your case, and for this I do apologise, as you say to then be handed an incorrect bill is just unforgivable.

Just why our Customer Service Department failed to contact you is a mystery, and certainly not the Macdonald way of doing things.

If you would like to discuss this further, then please feel free to email the hotel, and I will be only too delighted to talk through the various issues, and perhaps discuss you coming back again to see how things have improved.

Once again let me say how much we appreciate the time you have taken to advise us of these issues, and how keen we are to make sure these sorts of things do not happen in the future.

I rate MacDonald hotels very highly, so when I booked at Elmer's Court for a long weekend I was looking forward to a high quality hotel and a great stay.

It was dreadful.

Elmer's Court is a beautiful building in a fantastic setting. The hotel has great potential, but is let down by poor management, which shows itself in the general level of service and problems that you encounter during your stay.

Four examples illustrate the problems this hotel is experiencing:
1) We arrived to check in to find two members of staff, one of whom was a manager, swearing and arguing in reception. We were ignored for about 5 minutes while this went on.
2) The single put-up bed in our room had the most horrendous huge brown stain on the sheets. The sheets had clearly not been changed since the previous occupant, they had just been refolded across the bed. Even now, several weeks later, thinking about this turns my stomach.
3) It took two complaints to reception to get the problem with the sheets resolved. Not once did we get an apology when we complained about problems at reception.
4) After cleaning the bathroom, the housemaid managed to leave my wife's toothbrush on the floor and dirty tissues on the side.

The only positive comment we can make about the experience is that the breakfast was fantastic and the service in breakfast was very good.

I would strongly recommend you steer away from this hotel until a change of management takes place and someone gets a grip of the quality of service.

Come on MacDonald Hotels - you can do better than this.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your comment on trip advisor, as you will, I am sure be aware from your previous stays with Macdonald Hotels, we do pride ourselves on the high quality hotel services that we offer, on this occasion however it seems we missed the mark.

Staff should know better than to argue in any public areas and the fact that abusive language was used is extremely poor, and not I must stress the norm at Elmers Court.

In terms of the single put me up beds, having assisted the housekeeping staff in the past to make up these beds, I can confirm that they are made up fresh each time, however this does not explain the use of stained bedding, and for reception not to apologise is again not the way we normally do things here.

The housekeeping staff are, it is fair to say normally very conscientious and their attention to detail is often commented on, however it is clear that in your case this was not true.

I do want to thank you for your time in giving us this feedback, and I would just like to end by saying that since our new General Manager joined us we have been striving to improve not only the facilities, but more importantly the attitude of staff, and the level of service we offer. I hope that you will give us another opportunity to show you just how much things have improved here at the Macdonald Elmers Court Hotel & resort.
