“Very good”
Reviewed 1 October 2007

Spent a night at the Winelodge. The hotel itself is well situated just outside the town and near to the beach and promenade.

It is really well specified, with a very modern look and feel. The receptionist was friendly and welcoming. The room was small in size - this was an Executive Room - but very well furnished, modern, smart, comfortable and clean. A similar room in many other areas would have cost twice the price.

The bar area was small but again well furnished, with a great selection of drinks. We ate in the restaurant - I suspect there aren't many other places like this in the town! - and the food and wine was reasonably priced and service was very good - the steak in particular was superb.

The rates are reasonable and included a very good breakfast - the only downside was the incredibly slow and haphazard service - almost 30 minutes for a cooked breakfast is a bit excessive (even if it was obviously cooked fresh to order!).

Overall a good place to stay and explore the Suffolk coast and whilst Lowestoft is not as picturesque, it makes a great place to see other areas of the coastline.

Arrived at 9pm last Friday, and due to last review, knew that restuarant was closed. However, David on Reception quickly called his Mum at the Jolly Sailors pub/restaurant down the road (2mins by car) and promptly fixed us up. We had a good meal there.
The location next to a KFC and snooker hall did not fill us with confidence, but apart from the incident below, did not concern us.
We too stayed in a ground floor room (No. 2) with opaque windows. This didnt bother us, but the kids standing directly outside the window at 1am shouting proganities at their 'mates' did, although that wasn't the hotel's fault. Perhaps we were just unlucky that Friday. Best to ask for an upstairs room, although not sure if they are smaller.
Room very new and clean (it is a room for the disabled as bathroom sink very low (no soap on it!). Bed clean and comfortable. Breakfast pretty good too - full English , cereals, or toast. Staff very helpful and attentive - cant be faulted.

To sum up, this hotel is much better than 12th best suggests. I would not hesitate to book here again - but would get an upstairs room.

My expectations, brought about by the up market web site, were not met during my recent stay.
Having arrived at 21:20 because of a train delay, I was told that the restaurant closes at 9pm and that no room service was available. Something the website does not mention.
I was allocated a ground floor room which had opaque windows, making it seem like an interior room (or would have done had there not been the occational group of smokers standing directly outside the window). The curtain mechanism was broken and there were stains on the satin bedspread.
There was no bin in the bedroom, only the bathroom, and no soap at the washbasin. I had to ask for a hairdryer (which was provided promptly).
The breakfast menu consisted of a limited choice of cereals followed by either a full english or scrambled eggs on toast. No juice was served.
On the plus side, the double bed was very comfortable and the room had individual room temerature control. There was a lovely large, fully tiled bathroom. There was a small TV showing sky and the staff were pleasant.

  • Liked — The comfy bed!
  • Disliked — Room location, lack of room service
