“Great place to stop on your route North or South”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 June 2013

If you want a small hotel in a quiet village location, convenient for the main road to (or from) the North; with a very warm welcome; which is clean; has a comfortable bed; good food; an amazing selection of whiskies; friendly fellow guests and locals - then I recommend the Hightae Inn. Morag and Mark are excellent hosts: chatty, interested, informative and helpful. My room looked out across a garden (the next door neighbour could tidy this up!) to a field of cows and the sheep in the distance on the rolling hills.

The Hightae Inn is a former pub with rooms and it suited me perfectly as an overnight stay on my journey to Glasgow. It's easy to find; (it isn't in Lockerbie, take the Lockerbie junction off the motorway, drive on the A709 into Lochmaben, round Castle Loch and you'll find Hightae. They warned me about Sat Navs and mine wanted to lead me a merry dance.)

Negatives: None really except that I was too long for the bath! I had the upstairs room near the grumbling boiler and that wasn't a problem (and they are going to fix it). I slept like a log.

This is a part of Scotland that most people drive straight through and I think it would be good to come back here next time and spend a bit longer to explore the area. I am sure of a warm welcome and that whatever whisky I want, they'll probably have it.

Stayed the night at the Hightae Inn. We were made very welcome right from the moment we arrived. The room was beautiful, lovely bedding, clean and smart toilet with bath/shower. We also ate there that night and the food was first class. Breakfast was whatever you requested without any hesitation.
Would I recommend the Hightae? Without a doubt, yes! Would I stay here again? Yes.
A beautiful village with high standard hotel.
Thank you Mark and Morag for making us fell welcome at your lovely hotel

Stayed overnight on our way to Skye, the rooms are very comfortable, clean and ideal for a short stopover.

Morag & Mark are excellent hosts and the food, prepared by Morag, is superb. Great produce cooked in what appears to be a simple manner but Morag manages to pack the plate full of flavour! The slow cooked pork is to die for!

Mark offers a wide range of whiskies, including Japanese, and brings a good sense of fun to front of house.

Breakfast was lovely and the evening food is worth travelling for even without a stopover!

Lovely small hotel in a beautiful village. A very warm welcome awaits you, the rooms are very comfortable and well furnished. We were greeted like family and made to feel very welcome :-) Nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was fab - you need to try the homemade granola!!

Will definitely be back. Thanks again for a wonderful stay :-)

Comfy rooms away from the pub. Rooms not huge but top notch bed linen and best nights sleep on holiday. Mark and Morag very friendly hosts. Mark has a dry sense of humour and Morag cooks a mean evening meal and breakfast. Three of us had the slow roast pork shoulder and the other had sirloin steak - all excellent. Friendly locals and relaxed atmosphere in pub for dinner. Breakfast room not part of the pub. Porridge for breakfast (fuel for cyclists) would have been nice but the granola and scrambled eggs were really good. Overnight bike storage was spacious and secure and no hassles getting going in the morning. Highly recommended for other cycle tourers. Shame it rained cats and dogs the next day.

Many thanks to Mark and Morag for providing such a delightful stay. The food was excellent and home made, rooms clean and the banter was nothing short of gallus. The stout local bottled beer was delicious! Definitely a place i hope to come back to!

Room Tip: The boiler located next to my room did make a little noise, but i still slept soundly

Many thanks for your review Chris - we're glad you enjoyed yourselves here at The Hightae Inn.

Fair point with the boiler though - we're actually in the process of converting our existing oil fired heating system to biomass and as this will be housed in an outbuilding, rest assured no more background noise in that particular room.

Give us a call next time you fancy a a wee break down here in South West Scotland - delighted to have you back.

Kind regards

Away from the usual tourist routes this little gem is a trifle difficult to find. It sits in a small village just outside the Boarders town of Lockerbie but once there you will be rewarded with the friendliest of welcomes. The rooms are traditional and very comfortable. Breakfast is all the things good about Scottish food ( try the smoked salmon) and the menu has some excellent choices for dinner. I enjoyed the wine selection and I hear that the beer is worth investigating too. A lovely Inn to stay for a peaceful rest and pamper.

Many thanks for taking the time to place your review on TripAdvisor - we're so glad you enjoyed your stay and we'd love to have you back.

We know you had a bit of difficulty getting to us as we think your satnav pulled you off the motorway a junction or two early and then lead you a merry dance along some interesting local minor roads.

Rest assured, we are normally fairly easily found, only 10 minutes from the A74(M) at Lockerbie with the village of Hightae being a mile or so off the main Lockerbie to Lochmaben road.

We hope to see you again soon.
