“Great B&B in centre of town”
Reviewed 17 August 2012

We stayed at this B&B for 6 nights in May 2012. The location could not be more central, essentially a block or 2 away from everything.

It has only 3 rooms. Ours, room number 1, had a beautiful view of St Magnus Cathedral and the centre of town from its side window. The large room was very nicely decorated and comfortable (with a new ensuite bathroom). There was even an assortment of goodies, including Scottish shortbread, on the tea and coffee tray.

A full Scottish breakfast was served in a pleasant room on the ground floor. We recommend the poached eggs with bacon and tomato. We were made to feel very welcome by Peter and his family. Peter was eager to answer all our questions and booked us a taxi to the airport, 10 minutes away.

We stayed on the main island for our entire stay. We took 2 day tours (both by Explore Orkney): an excellent tour of the fascinating Neolithic sites; a walking tour to Mull Head to see the wild life. Another day we took the bus to the port of Stromness (not to be missed), a picturesque small town with 400 years of transatlantic history (good museum). Don’t miss the interior of St Magnus Cathedral and the distillery tour at Highland Park (try to avoid cruise ship days).

Room Tip: Room number 1 has twin beds, a nice bay window and side window with view. Very little traffic on the...

Situated right next to St Magus Cathedral, 13 Palace Road is a really lovely, comfortable Guest House.

A wide choice of breakfasts catering for all tastes are offered.

The rooms are spotlessly clean with every home comfort needed.

A really lovely, warm and friendly atmosphere.

I very rarely write a review of a guest house. Careful booking ensures that most fall within the good / very good category. 13 Palace Rd. is however, excellent. It is a few minutes walk from the cathedral and bishop's palace and just across the road from the St Magnus Centre: less than 5 minutes takes you to Kirkwall's main street and a rich variety of shops.
The house is tastefully decorated and the bedroom which I had was extremely comfortable with en suite shower etc. The room looked out on the Cathedral; a splendid sight when lit up at night. Breakfast was excellent.
What however was truly outstanding was the attention given by the host (Peter) to the welfare of guests. Nothing was the slightest trouble.
I would recommend this guest house to anyone.

Myself and three friends booked the twin rooms for an overnight stay in April 2011. The accomodation had been recommended and we were not disappointed. The rooms were spacious, clean and nicely presented.Peter and his family could not have been more helpful. The breakfast was great with a superb choice of fresh fruit with yogurt or porridge before freshly cooked bacon, sausages, eggs etc. I would highly recommend this establishment which is opposite the Cathedral and therefore within easy walking distance to the centre. We ate in Lucano Italian restaurant on the Sunday evening- very nice.

We stayed for 3 nights 15 - 18 April and loved this B & B. Peter, the owner & his family could not have done any more for us. Rooms were en suite, spotlessly clean and well decorated. Breakfast was wonderful and freshly cooked to order. minutes from the centre of Kirkwall and the shops, bars & restaurants. When we return this will be our first choice accommodation. Highly recommended.

We stayed fr 2 nights at 13 Palace Road, Kirkwall. We were made very welcome. The breakfast was first class with food to suit all tastes. The rooms were beautfully furnished and very clean and comfortable. I particularly liked the use of the local pictures, pottery and placemats. It was a lovely touch. I would highly recommend this bed and breakfast.

Small B and B in the very centre of Kirkwall. Across from St Magnus Cathederal and 5 mins walk from the bus station. It only has 3 rooms but they are all very spacious. Only down side is one double doesn't have an ensuite but a bathroom right next door to the bedroom. There are fluffy dressing gowns supplied for guest use. Tea (various types), coffee and biscuits supplied in rooms. Great breakfast.
