“Pleasant Staff and Good Food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 November 2013

We stopped in the restaurant here after exploring Kirkwall as part of a 1 day trip to the Orkneys from John O'Groats. The staff couldn't have been more pleasant and accommodating - even allowing our aged Labrador into the dining room. It's pleasantly furnished in a comfortable old-fashioned style. We explained we were in a bit of a hurry to catch our coach so they brought out soup - which was delicious and then smoked salmon for my husband and something nice for me (can't remember what it was at the moment!) but the food was very good - tasty and wholesome and the service excellent. Highly recommended if you're visiting the Orkneys.

Room Tip: sorry, didn't stay just had lunch and can't find a review site for that.

I stayed here for one night while visiting Orkney for business. The check-in process was easy, the reception helped me out with directions and taxi bookings. I dined at the hotel restaurant in the evening and for breakfast. Enjoyin a delicious dinner of traditional Cullen Skink, followed by a Chicken and Haggis dish with some of the best homemade Onion Rings I have ever tasted! Followed by a scrummy Orkney Fudge Cheesecake (when in Rome ;))

The breakfast set me up well for my flight back home, cooked to perfection!

Room and hotel were all spotless and the bed was very comfortable.

Stayed here three nights; would definitely recommend this hotel. It is convenient and the staff were very kind, helpful and courteous. Short walk from everything, including St. Magnus Cathedral. We were leading a group touring Scotland and will definitely stay there again. Rooms were clean and a nice size for such an old hotel.

Spent a week, in October, exploring Orkney and the Kirkwall Hotel was an excellent base. Our room overlooked the harbour and was comfortable and clean to come back to after a long day, walking. Cheers to the housekeeping staff. All the staff were friendly and helpful and the hotel had a good, relaxing atmosphere. Food was good, breakfast set you up for the rest of the day. Would certainly return to the Kirkwall Hotel, a week was not long enough to explore what Orkney has to offer. I recommend a visit to the tourist office before you start exploring as they too were very helpful.

What an old world hotel. On arrival Ellis at reception was welcoming and friendly, good start. The room is dated but warm and very clean. In the main bar area it was homely and very nice to relax in, Olwen behind the the bar was very funny and like all the people in Orkney, very keen to tell us about the island, the places to see and all that was happening at the time of our stay. The bar next door (part of the hotel) was a buzz of happy people enjoying their free time, Sheree behind the bar was a hoot, smiling and happy in her job, The food in the restaurant was delicious, larg portions and very well presented. The hotel needs word done to it but James the night porter told us this is an ongoing project. Recommend to all

Amazing service, old world charm, very helpful staff, clean accommodations. The view of the Harbour was stunning.

We arrived late, about 10.30 and the staff fed us. They gave us great information on the city library, helped us rent a car, we were so thankful!

All the food was great--I'd highly recommend the Kirkwall Hotel. If you are headed to the Orkney Islands, this is the place to stay at.

Room Tip: We stayed for our 25th anniversary, took the ferry to Stromness, the local bus to Kirkwall and it wa...

We were pleasantly surprised by the hotel. It sits in the middle of the city of Kirkwall overlooking the harbour which is always busy with the comings and goings of the ferries to the islands and fishermen going about their trade.

The building is imposing and a pleasant red sandstone. The welcome was efficient and they had all the details correct and the receptionist provided useful information. The room was recently refurbished and a very comfortable bed and chairs and a fantastic view of the harbour. The bathroom was pleasant and the shower good. Tea and coffee making equipment and good blackouts but the walls were borderline too thin but not a problem.

We had dinner in the restaurant and it was very good with smooth friendly service and the place was packed which shows that local people use it, not too many visitors at this time of year. Prawn cocktail was excellent and the baked Orkney cheese starter was brilliant. The crab and macoroni was not to be missed as was stuffed chicken. All very good and friendly and a wine list that was well thought out and good value, we had a bottle of Chardonnay.

Breakfast was really well done, competent trained staff and well overseen by the manager.

Slight downside was the noise from the takeaway outside but this stopped early.

Check out was efficient and i would definitely go back. The hotel is ideal for visiting the islands generally, it is close to the north island ferries and also for visiting Kirkwall itself. The cathedral is worth a visit.
