“Decent old fashioned hotel in a good spot for ferries”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 June 2014

We stayed here for one night on our way home from one of the Northern Isles. It was just what I expected really - quite old fashioned, with small rooms but perfectly adequate for what we wanted. The breakfast is included and is pretty good. The only reason I have rated it as average rather than very good was the price as I thought it was a bit on the steep side for what was on offer.

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Kirkwall Hotel. We had a very nice room, well equipped and overlooking the harbour. And dinner (on our first night, we ate out on our second night) was delicious: cooked with flair and well served. Our only reservation was in the quality of the breakfast. While the kippers and smoked haddock were excellent, bread rolls were on the menu but certainly not there at 9am on either day of our stay; and the fruit was restricted to prunes, grapefruit segments (forbidden to a statin taker) or Granny Smith apples. Fruit juice and glasses to drink it from were also at a low ebb. A small improvement here would have led to an 'excellent' assessment from us.

We stayed here last week for one night in a sea view room. This is a really traditional hotel - slightly dated feel but we liked that. Staff were really helpful and friendly and our room was very comfortable with good view. We had to leave at 6.30 am so they provided us with an early breakfast which was greatly appreciated. Would definitiely stay here again.

Very much a traditional hotel with quaint elevators with two sets of doors - where you have to close them both before the lift will operate. A real throwback to the forties. There was a dated feel to some aspects, the wallpaper on the stairway was tatty in places as was some aspects of our bedroom, e.g shower and sanitary ware. Can't fault the location, overlooking the harbour, or the breakfast but it was the most expensive room on our trip and did not feel like good value.

We stayed here recently whilst visiting for the Folk Festival. Staff were friendly ( like everyone in Orkney), informative and helpful throughout, whether at reception, in the dining room or at the bar. No problem when we curtailed our stay by one night in order to go to Stromness, also got an electric heater promptly provided when it was cold at night and we couldn't get the radiator to work.
Room wasn't the biggest, but was very nicely furnished and decorated, with a nice view onto the harbour. Lovely comfortable bed. Bathroom was compact but clean and with good quality toiletries supplied. Shower pressure wasn't great but did the job. Breakfast was varied and plentiful. Can't comment on lunch or dinner and we chose not to eat in the bar at the side as the music was a bit noisy for us ( personal choice, might suit others)
As other guests have stated, this is a comfortable traditional hotel, with lots of character (loved the old-style lift), handy for ferries and shopping. Overall good value for money and seemed like the best hotel on the Orkney Mainland

Small bedroom on 3rd floor facing harbour giving nice view. Excellent bed & pillows with modern wardrobe, worktop/drawer unit plus bedside units with drawer. Over furnished with two armchairs plus small table resulting in cramped feel. TV (freeview channels) with text & subtitles functioning.
Tea/coffee tray with local shortbread & bottled water. One radiator plus hairdryer. No aircon or fridge but one radiator and adequate plug sockets.
Shower room with gel and shampoo supplied but no shelf or ledge in shower so don’t slip on the soap.
Interesting antique lift with old style double doors operated manually.
Hotel is privately owned and very popular, so restaurant and adjacent pub are well patronised. Hotel bar is quieter and pub prices prevail. They offer a good range of local brews (see photo)
Cooked breakfast very nice and served to your table.
Service standards were good & although bedroom walls were thin we were lucky that our neighbours were just as tired as us and we were not disturbed.
Kirkwall Hotel was commandeered as officer’s quarters during WW2 and they usually know the best spots in town.

I don't know if it's just me but when I arrive at an old Hotel it always fills me with a sence of doom, just waiting on run down bedrooms that havn't been updated since the 60's, with horrible bathrooms that your scared to actually use or shower in. I think I may have stayed in a few over the years that have scarred me for life.

But a big hand for the Kirkwall Hotel, My room was as fresh as a daisy, everything looked very new, bathroom spotless with a great shower, again recently updated by the look of it, a cracking big LCD TV on the wall, also free wifi which was quick, and a lovely comfy bed, and a great view over the harbour.

I had dinner in the restaraunt, which again was lovely, the restaraunt still had the old charm of the hotel, which I liked, it wasn't ripped out to be some modern chic setting, but more in keeping with the age of the hotel. I had to laugh at an old couple beside me as the waiter tried to explain to them what Irn-Bru was.

It really is good when hoteliers put back in some money to the hotel to keep it fresh, rather than just relying on guaranteed income from the scottish tourist trade every year (other hotels in Orkney take note) Will definetly return.
