“Foveran Hotel - fab food and comfy beds”
Reviewed 2 October 2011

This hotel is in a great location and the food is the best you'll find anywhere in Orkney. Melt in the mouth slow roasted North Ronaldsay Mutton was superb - rich dense taste like nothing I've ever eaten. Fillet steak was the best eaten all year. The chef is flexible if you prefer plainer food and the rooms are comfortable. Friendly helpful owners and staff - what more do you want? We'll be back.

Stayed here for 2 nights recently, the hotel was chosen on the basis of the food first, and boutique hotel second. it didn't disappoint on either. Excellent dinner and the service could be faulted on both evenings. Made welcome on arrival.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the first corridor off reception - better view of Scapa Flow.

Room Tip: Room Number 1 in the first corridor off reception - better view of Scapa Flow.

Stayed here for 2 nights recently, the hotel was chosen for us but on the basis of the food first, and boutique hotel second. it didn't disappoint on either. I think you might begin to struggle with the menu if eating here for, say, more than 3 nights - but for 2/3 there was plenty of choice - and neither the quality nor service could be faulted.

Our slight niggle (and only reason for rating 4/5), was our room. The size and facilities were no problem and everything you'd expect. However, a bunch of noisy elderly guests were in the room next to us, and proceeded to make every possible noise imaginable (TV, conversation, shower) from 6.30 in the morning. Whether it was their volume, or the thickness of the walls we shall never know - but both mornings we were woken soon after they "started" and couldn't really get back to sleep. At times you could hear their conversation sufficiently clearly so as to join in should you fancy.

We did mention this to the owner when leaving, but apart from confirming our suspicions on which group of guests it was.. nothing could really be said apart from the usual apologies. But would we let this stop us from considering a repeat visit? No.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the first corridor off reception - better view of Scapa Flow.

A careful chef here takes the best that Orkney has to offer (it is bountiful and of great quality, especially seafood and locally reared beef and lamb) and treats it with care, ensuring everyone can enjoy the great flavours.

The service was attentive and friendly.

I stayed here wih my mum for four nights and could not fault it. The pictures on this website and really the hotel's website don't do it justice. The hotel is lovely, the rooms are clean and cosy (and by that I don't mean small) and the food fantastic.

The staff were all very friendly and willing to help in whatever way possible. I would definitely recommend this hotel to others!

Room Tip: Stay for tea, the food is fantastic!

This was the base for a holiday exploring Orkney.

The food was so good that we ended up eating in the restaurant for 5 nights - there was enough variety on the main menu plus the daily specials to mean we never felt tempted to try elsewhere. The pork belly was the best I have ever eaten, while my wife is still in raptures over the duck she had. We both recommend the scallops and the hot smoked salmon. (Incidentally when the Foveran say they can cope with special diets they mean it - they were able to adjust almost any dish with no difficulty to meet our requirement that one of us not have any milk or milk products in their food). The service during dinner was always good - attentive but not obtrusive. We were not surprised that it was clearly a destination of choice for locals looking for a good meal out.

The way the Foveran works is that diners place their orders in the lounge, and are only shown to their table when the food is ready. If I had to quibble about our stay it would be that the lounge was not really big enough for this to work when they were at their busiest.

Our room was clean, spacious and well appointed.

Breakfast offered an excellent choice (not just the usuals but also eg smoked haddock) cooked to order.

Following recommendations we booked dinner here. The setting and food were excellent however we were surprised that no one offered to take our wet coats as we arrived and there was no friendly greeting. The young waitresses were very attentive and polite however the more mature waitress in charge was rather abrupt. When paying at the end we were not ask if we had enjoyed our meal.
