We recently stayed at Orkney Hotel for 4 nights and thought Evening Dinners looked good and tasted very good - some of the waitresses needed abit of training to really finish it off to excellent standard. Hotel lovely in parts is perhaps aliilte off perfect in bedroom areas but good position in Kirkwall and breakfasts huge and tasty too. Would stay there again if in Orkney.

Room Tip: Go for best if fussy.

The location and friendly staff make up for the faded former glory of this hotel. There is no lift so be prepared to haul your cases up stairs and through a series of corridors to reach our room. The room size was good, as was the bathroom size and the heated towel rail was an added bonus to dry our washing. The room was panelled with dark wood which made it appear dark and dingy. But writing this review one must remember that this hotel was built as a merchants home in the 1600's, which accounts for the rabbit warren layout. There is a mouldy smell as you walk through some of the wings and although we couldn't smell it at the time, when unpacking our pyjamas at our next hotel we discovered a lingering smell of mildew on them! I can only conclude that it must be from the mattress as the rest of our clothes in suitcases were OK.
Now to the good bits - the dining room is bright and beautifully set for breakfast and dinner, fresh flowers on the table and crisp white linenTablecloths. The staff are very experienced and friendly and go out of their way to ensure you are happy. The food is well cooked and presented and the produce is locally sourced, fresh and high quality. We ate elsewhere on one night and were sorry we did as Orkney Hotel food was far superior.
A mixed review I'm afraid, but remember that this is a remote part of the world and options are limited. Would I stay here again - yes. Just don't expect 5 Star rooms. You will however receive a 5 star welcome and good quality food.

Tip: ensure you book ahead for dinner each day. Options for dining are limited in Kirkwall and all over the Islands. If you don't book ahead you may not get a table. Meals are eaten early here, so plan to have dinner no later than 7 or 7.30pm, otherwise chef may be gone by 8. Also, come 5.30pm Kirkwall empties out and literally shuts down. If you need to buy water or other provisions, do it before you go out for the day.

Initially I was in a room which was very small, carpet was threadbare and in need of a good scrub. As I wasn't paying for it I just thought I'd grin and bear it however in the morning I discovered the shower did not work. After telling the very helpful receptionist I came back and all my luggage had been moved to another room for me. This room was bigger with a working shower but still in need of a good clean and upgrade.

Room Tip: Make sure shower works as soon as you go in before you need it :P

I regularly stay at the Orkney Hotel. The rooms vary in size but all are well furnished and comfortable. The bedrooms are on three floors and there is no lift so it can be a bit of a climb. The hotel does, however, have an annex which contains three level access rooms suitable for less mobile guests.
The restaurant uses local produce were possible and serves tasty, well presented food. Meals are also served in the lounge bar.
Staff are friendly and helpful.
There is parking and a small garden to the rear of the hotel.

Room Tip: This hotel is in the centre of town so the front rooms can be a bit noisy at weekends.

The staff at the Orkney were just great. After a long journey up to Kirkwall, we were greeted with a large comfortable room and quick tour of the hotel. The restaurant and pub helped to make our first night there easy and relaxed. We would recommend it and would stay there again, if we make it back that far north.

Used this hotel as our base for exploring Orkney. Comfortable hotel in a good central location, close to St Magnus Cathedral and shopping. Useful car Park to the rear, down a fairly steep ramp. Staff were friendly. Our room was quiet, at the end of a corridor and slept well in a comfortable bed. Good breakfast in the morning with choice of cereals, fruit juices and an optional hot breakfast.
For a two or three night stay it is probably fine, but for our week stay a few extra touches would have been good. I would have expected Orkney soaps by way of toilettries, Orkney biscuits with the tea/coffee making facilities and certainly draught Orkney Brewery beer in the bar. Wrong on all counts - sachets in the bathroom, not even a Walkers shortbread finger in sight, and Belhaven in the bar. There seemed to be little interest in local products or local flavour, in sharp contrast to the hotel we stayed in last year in Arran. We seemed to be missing a second bedside table and worryingly a window catch did not appear to work (reported at Checkout). There had been a major refurbishment in the upstairs public areas, with a comfortable lounge and a spacious dining room, but other areas such as the downstairs loos were badly in need of similar treatment. There was a large garden at the back but totally devoid of any garden furniture, so it was not particularly usable.
