The Royal Cask Whisky Bar at the Orkney Hotel
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 10 Jun 2023
Great location in Kirkwall, close to all the sights. Nice looking hotel. The building is well maintained. The Royal Cask Whisky Bar found in the hotel is excellent. The bar has a extensive whisky menu.

This is a great hotel situated close to everything and opposite the harbour. The rooms were very clean with ample space and good beds. Yes you can hear traffic and sound proofing could be improved but they do a great breakfast. The staff are helpful and friendly and really make the place. I would stay again.

Room tip: Book dinner when you arrive as it gets full quickly. The meals are lovely and there is free wifi.

The hotel is very dated and in need of refurbishment. The room décor is 1970s brown, dowdy and depressing. Breakfast is ok, but one evening’s dinner of burger was very poor, almost inedible, (overcooked and leathery and well below a McDonald’s for example). We complained about the room but no-one came back to us, -twice. And it’s pricey, over £150 per night plus a dog charge. The garden could have been delightful but was overgrown and untidy, eg old electrical appliances dumped in garden, indicative of everything said here. The four star rating is misleading.

The hotel room we stayed was very large and comfortable, although the bathroom was somewhat outdated. Breakfast that was served was delicious and their restaurant was good. The staff were all courteous and friendly. The location was central and away from the main busy street along the pier.

Excellent hotel, the owners and staff go the extra mile. A party of 9 of us stayed here and had a great time as part of a tour of Scotland. The whisky collection is second to none. Rooms are cosy and warm.

Room tip: Try all the whisky.

We visited for a meal with family and the menu and presentation of food was awful. I would say with a few tweaks perhaps the existing owners could bring it back to greatness, but changes need to be made! Every meal was served in a bucket load of thick brown gravy… the meat was literally swimming in this sludge! There was a very limited choice on menu.. extremely old fashioned. In Orkney one would expect to find beautiful fresh fish… not just fried haddock and chips. I’m afraid we wouldn’t recommend to anyone and we won’t be returning.
