“Beautiful garden”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

This museum is opposite the Cathedral, so very easy to find. The museum used to be a family home & became a museum in 1968. It is now an A-listed building. The library & drawing room show how the house would have looked when it was a family home. The exhibits date back from 4000 BC. The old house which must have been very grand when it was built. The staircase is really lovely & flooded with light. At the bottom of the staircase there are a collection of old Orkney style fireside chairs, these must have been very comforting to relax in when the weather was very cold.

We visited this museum on a beautiful, sunny day & spent quite a long time enjoying the back garden. There are some lovely plants & flowers here & the garden was really quiet & peaceful.

This museum is full of wonderful and interesting things to see. It covers Orkney history from the beginning of time - well it seems to anyway.

“Orkney life”
Reviewed 29 June 2014

A museum set up in an old house. Free entry, and really worth the time to explore round the many rooms, holding artifacts from pre-historic times right up to the present day.
You need a few hours to find your way round the rooms, which although sign posted, can be a bit confusing what to see next.
Great insight into the social history of the islands

Nice small town museum. Floors are sloped...so old. You can zip thru this place in 30 minutes. Free admission. Why not?
