“Make this part of your visit to Birsay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 April 2014

he palace is a beautifully preserved bit of history which is sitting imposingly in the unassuming settlement of Birsay. In its time it was the seat of power for Orcadian nobles, but today it is a surprisingly large monument in this relatively remote part of Mainland Orkney. It is free to go in, so why not stop and take a look. It is really impressive from the main road at sunset (in March), as the sun sets over the sea behind the Palace. It is al ovely walk from here to the point opposite the Brough of Birsay, and at low tide there are fossils to be seen on the nearby beach.

“Lovely old 17thC Palace”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 March 2014

The Earls Palace is really interesting, amazingly there are still a number of rooms in the old Palace. From the outside it just looks like an empty shell.

We would recommend looking in all the cellars as there is an end cellar that has pictures and diagrams of what the Palace would have looked like. Really helps bring picture together.

“worth a visit”

Impressive ruin right by the cathedral. Would have liked more in depth information boards, or a guide book of some sort, but it was fun imagining how the palace would have been at its height. Great views over the town from the highest point in the tower.

“Amazing views over the Cathedral”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 November 2013

We visited the Earls Palace as part of our day tour. This old palace has been well constructed and what remains of it is in beautiful condition. Do go and explore the wine and food cellars and the well. Some great views from the top of the palace overlooking the Cathedral and town.

“Interesting ruined palace.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 October 2013

We visited the Earls and Bishop's palaces while in Kirkwall. The Earls Palace is fairly interesting, we liked the cellars and main dining hall you can almost get a feel for how grand the palace must have looked in the 1600s. This was more interesting than the Bishops Palace, a good way to spend 20 minutes.
