“Interesting Palace but not open!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 May 2014

My wife and I decided to spend a bit of time exploring Kirkwall which included walking up various side streets and looking at the Earls Palace. Such a shame it was closed as it was a lovely day.

Grand old building from the outside and you can still wander around the grounds of this old palace. We had thought that as it was in Kirkwall it would be open all year.

Anyway we will know for next time.

“Really interesting”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 April 2014

It is really nice with a good history. Give yourself around half an hour or so to go around here. It has a big fireplace in the kitchen area where when you look up it is really well built for the period. Other rooms are also quite spectacular

“Interesting ruin”

This palace is made up of two sections. The bishop's place and the earl's palace one ticket to cover both. Opposite St Magnus cathedral is the second highlight of Kirkwall city centre.

“Make this part of your visit to Birsay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 April 2014

he palace is a beautifully preserved bit of history which is sitting imposingly in the unassuming settlement of Birsay. In its time it was the seat of power for Orcadian nobles, but today it is a surprisingly large monument in this relatively remote part of Mainland Orkney. It is free to go in, so why not stop and take a look. It is really impressive from the main road at sunset (in March), as the sun sets over the sea behind the Palace. It is al ovely walk from here to the point opposite the Brough of Birsay, and at low tide there are fossils to be seen on the nearby beach.
