The room whilst neat and clean was freezing. There was snowfall on the first day of my visit so it was cold both inside and outside. The room had single pane glass windows which didn't help. There was an electric heater in the room, though as the room is fitted with a key fob isolator, when you go out the electricity goes off. So after being out in the cold all day, I came back to a cold room. It then takes quite a while to heat the room up. If you pop to the restaurant for a meal, you lose all the heat in the time it takes you to eat your meal. In an attempt to keep the heater on whilst i went out, I inserted my house key fob in the isolator. But the maid was having none of it and removed it whilst she made up my room.

The meals were dire. They seemed have be pre prepared then warmed as required.
When the bowl it's supposed to have been cooked in is colder than the contents, I tend to think microwaved. ...

Finally the off duty staff, congregate on the stairs above reception. As this is the best point at which the free wifi is strongest and enables them to Skype their friends. Leaving you to struggle past them with your bags.

This hotel primarily caters for offshore workers, anyone else avoid at all costs.

Thank you for your comments. For your information the key fob isolator does not control the heating, this is controlled at reception. At this time of the year all heaters are left on. We have many good comments about our food. Our food is home-style cooking and is not what everybody wants.

Great experience. Great service. Great food. Very cumfy room. You only get what you pay for and we would defo travel over 500 miles to stay in the Grand hotel again. The only problem was we only stayed for one night. The next time we will stay for the full weekend. No faults with anything at all.

Room Tip: Didnt use the restauant this time but the breakfast was 1st class.

It is very hard to find a good hotel in Lerwick. i thought the grand must be ok. well, it might have been ok 50 years back, but it is a bit shabby now.
i was on the top floor, the shower did not have enough water pressure to reach the top with a decent amount of flow.
the carpet is old,the bed is old, the wallpaper is old, basicaly everything is old.
the breakfast however is good. and the location is excelent

Room Tip: for a good room, try an other hotel.

Thank you for your comments. Refurbishment plans are underway and hopefully work will start in the near future. The water pressure in the showers is a problem that is more difficult to rectify in a building of this age as we would have to renew all the pipework.

Stayed at the Grand 4 nights - Allocated room was huge with 4 poster bed and overlooking harbour - bathroom was also large and well appointed. Breakfasts were OK and we dined here on one night which was enjoyable. Parking was above the hotel and the entry was quite steep for old crocks like me.

Room Tip: Harbour frontage rooms are a little more expensive I think but well worth it

Ate at the grand carvery last Sunday with friends and have to say the service was out of this world. Very friendly staff who seem to enjoy their work and it comes across in their fantastic service. The carvery was very tasty and plentiful with 3 meats and vegetables to choose from with a vegetarian option on the menu also. The only downfall I can mention was the chef serving each member of my party individually meaning that by the time the last person had sat down the first person had finished eating. Perhaps the chef could serve the meat and allow the customers to select their own vegetables which would speed the service up greatly. I would definitely eat here again and noticed that under 5s eat free too.... Bonus!

Myself and about 20 other people were booked into this hotel with work, the staff were excellent at treating us like second class citizens. With staff begrudging any queries, acting as though we were the ones who should have been grateful to be lucky enough to stay there.

The rooms were very dated and small, wish I had taken more photos, well in need of refurb.

Food was of poor quality - a £19 sirloin steak medium rare came out like a slice of well done roast beef with cardboard chips and nothing else (eg. Salad garnish/tomato/onion rings etc.), tasteless pâté and the service was shoddy and slow

Thank you for your comments. All of our guests are treated in the same manner. The fact that you are booked in as part of a large group makes no difference to the level of service that our guests receive. If you had a complaint you should have raised the issue at the time with a member of the management team rather than a public forum.

Stayed recently at The Grand. It was an ok stay. Room was comfortable, clean and reasonably furnished.
The building itself is full of Character and the hotel is well located for exploring Lerwick.
I went to the public bar for a tasty beverage or two. It was a little dingy but I imagine with a crowd in there it would be fine.
There are a lot of stairs in the hotel and I don.t think there is a lift/elevator.

On this occasion I did not eat in the hotel but colleagues who did said it was OK.

In summary not too much to commend but nothing too much to complain about. Lerwick is limited in hotels and this one seemed similar to others but well located in the centre.
