“Very pleasant”
Reviewed 2 July 2015 for a stay in June 2015

i love stumbling on hidden gems when working away and this was one of them. Lerwick in the Shetland Islands is well know to be difficult to get accommodation during the week due to the amount of oil and gas workers but I managed to book this apartment for 1 night. Unfortunately I was only there briefly by myself even though there are 3 pleasant bedrooms that sleep 6 in total. Lovely big lounge and nice fresh new open plan kitchen that's stocked with essentials. Cereal, milk, teabags etc and a pack of biscuits (thanks!) best room was the bathroom. Lovely. It actually just felt like staying at home. Right in the middle of the town centre but still really quiet.

“Fantastic flat”

Stayed here for four nights over simmer dim. The flat is beautiful and clean and although it is the centre of town it is lovely and bright. The flat is well equipped with everything you would need. We were only a couple but there is plenty of space for 6 people with a breakfast bar and table and chairs. The bathroom is large bright and the underfloor heating is lovley. There is only one toilet but two showers and wash and basins and I would not see this as an issue even if more people were in the flat.

The garden is lovley and peaceful and we were lucky with the weather were able to enjoy it for a while.
It is easy to walk around Lerwick although is quite hilly but we found no issue with this or the stairs at the flat. I suffer from arthritis but if you take your time it's not an issue and the accommodation is well worth the climb in my opinion.

There was a lovely welcome package which allowed us to have tea and coffee when we arrived . This was much appreciated

I would recommend this accommodation and will be back again soon.
Thank you Carina

“Lovely apartment, great location, make sure it meets your needs...”

Looking at previous reviews, the one by Mark-Hunter-1 is comprehensive and helpful.

The accommodation is contemporary and attractive but please note

- the external spiral staircase has 31 steps

- there is only one toilet

- there is access to a garden but it's tiny, around the corner and overlooked

- views are of rooftops and harbour glimpses, lovely

We didn't think the property would cope well with 6 people, however the group of 6 was configured. Same for 4.

Eating - there was only a breakfast bar with 3 seats when we were there, otherwise it was on your lap on the sofa. You might think that's not the end of the world, we can eat out, but in Lerwick options are limited. On the other hand, you can buy excellent food to eat in and the way the apartment is configured at the moment might not support your aspirations!

That said, this is a lovely place to be based in Lerwick. Comfortable, warm, quiet, central.

In response to your review:
There is a bathroom with seperate bath, shower, sink and toilet. In the master bedroom there is an additional shower and sink. This is due to the difficulty in renovating an old building and the difficulties in being able to run new pipework.
The staircase, is no other than two flights of stairs, the only difference being that it is exterior to the building.
The garden is not tiny 30ft x 25ft, it is a town centre garden, with the Fort Charlotte 30 foot wall on one side, a 6 foot wall on the other, the neighbours garden fence on the other side and the apartment itself which overlooks the garden.
There is a breakfast bar, seating 3, with an additional table and 6 chairs for our larger groups. As explained to you prior to you submitting your review, the new table and chairs are in place due to delivery delays. As there were only 2 people staying, I find it quite amusing how you feel the need to judge it for 6 people staying.

I was working locally and fort Charlotte self catering was highly recommended
I booked up and stayed
The owners were helpful and the apartment was finished off to a high standard with great finishing touches
There are 3 bedrooms so great for a family or friends staying
I plan to visit again in the near future and would look no further than fort Charlotte self catering

“Almost perfect, good V.F.M., comfy, 3x double bed flat in big, old townhouse - except for spiral staircase.”

I and two pals stayed in Fort Charlotte's very homely, comfortable and clean holiday flat recently and enjoyed our stay very much.

Indeed I hope to return A.S.A.P. and would be very happy, if this were my home.

--- The owner lady was vey helpful - leaving lots of fruit, cereals, milk, cake + biscuits for us in the kitchen;
+ helpful and accommodating - texting us to inform us about our weather-disrupted flights from Orkney, checking whether we had made it to F.C. OK, and not charging us for the first planned night there, when we could not fly to Shetland due to weather.

The owner lady also suggested lots of very interesting places to visit and locals to meet on Shetland, inc. some known only by residents.

--- There were only two, possibly major problems, which are vital to know before one can decide whether to stay here:-

#1) There is very little space to park outside - only c.5 spaces on the steep, public road - just across the street.

One must also turn car around in a steep and varyingly angled T-junction, either when parking or leaving. For some drivers this may well induce vertigo. esp' if car is loaded up heavily.

#2) The flat can only be accessed by an external, metal, tall - 3-storey staircase.

This was no problem for us and won't be for many, but sadly will be for many others.

If there were easier parking and internal stairs, this really would be a perfect flat.

--- There are lots of hugely positive things about this flat and I would like to live here for real!

It felt like our home from the moment we walked in, a very happy vibe and I am sure everyone would greatly enjoy staying here.

Why? In summary:

-- In centre of Lerwick - walkable to everything good in 5 min's.
-- All of the flat is painted very warmly,
-- was very clean and well-maintained,
-- has cosy wooden floors,
-- lovely, big furniture and rooms;
-- a very smart and well-stocked kitchen and bathroom,
-- + nice views over the harbour from the lounge and two bedrooms.

-- 3 x good-sized, cosy double bedrooms + comfy beds + big double wardrobes.
-- The biggest even has its own en-suite shower and sink, (no toilet), in a small cupboard en-suite.

--- So, I will walk you thru the flat now:-

1) Don't worry about the outside staircase being awkward to use.

As at the top is a big, metal platform with enough space for 4-5 people to stand, put down suitcases and un/lock the front door without any squashed, vertigo-inducing trickiness.

2) Inside front door is a corner of floor big enough to leave muddy shoes, bags, jackets, etc.

3) Walk along the L-shaped corridor past main bathroom, (on right) - with a lovely big bath, big shower, big frosted window over the garden and under-floor heating!

4) Walk past the 3 bedrooms and into the very large lounge-kitchen.

5) This overlooks the harbour at the front - by the big, leather, L-sofa + big coffee table + bookcase; along Fort Charlotte's castle walls from side window; over garden and the walls from kitchen at rear.

6) Kitchen has all the cooking and eating kit you need, is modern and smart.

7) Kitchen has a breakfast bar for 4 people. This is the only proper place to eat, as there is a low coffee table by sofa - not ideal. It would be better to install a dining table than the b. bar, as smart and fun as it is.

8) Bins need to be emptied before leaving, carried down external staircase to the bin in the ground-floor, outside courtyard.

--- So, if you don't mind the staircase and parking, stay here in Lerwick - I think it must be the best choice!

Thank you for your review. I have noted the need for a dining table, which is now installed.

Just to note the staircase is only a double spiral which is a two NOT three story staircase and replaces a dingy, crumbling, wooden enclosed staircase, which was not suitable for the purpose. This along with strict building regulations in the enclosed area, made us decide for a spiral staircase as a safe, pleasing to the eye structure to access the property.

I am delighted you enjoyed the flat and glad I was able to return the lost iPod free of charge to its owner who left it behind.

If you are heading to Lerwick, consider staying here. The apartment is fresh, contemporary & very well situated.

I am looking to go back in the spring & will also be looking to go back to Fort Charlotte Self Catering!

I decided to stay here after a request on visit.shetland accomodation web page: we were accepted although for a few days, in a warm apartment fully equiped with everything I needed, so central, so familiar that we stayed like at home! The ferry to bressay is so near, we could see it from the living room windows and fort charlotte is just behind
