A great break for my wife and two friends to a Gala Ball and Family Disco 2 day break.. Our rooms were clean and comfortable and a well appointed bathroom with lovely fluffy towels. ! pr0blem the water pressure was low in our room but our friends was good.

The Gala ball on New Years Eve was well organized with plenty of polite and efficient staff to look after us. the food was excellent, well cooked and hot with quick service, price of drink and wine a bit on the dear side.

The Disco on the 2nd night was over crowded and organization poor and very noisy so we chose the restaurant and had a excellent meal with a wonderful cheerful young waiter named James who was very efficient and advised on the meal and wine. he really made our evening with his repartee and happy manner

Room Tip: No lifts to first floor

We had the embarrassment of being severely disappointed over Christmas when we popped in for a few drinks. My daughter grew up here but is a Food and Beverage Manager at a prestigious club in London and is extremely keen on clients having a memorable experience of good food/drinks/service. She noticed the cocktail list and having seen what London offers, was keen to promote Scotland as being able to compete with the city slickers. Almost every cocktail she ordered (in some cases reminding the bar staff how to actually make them) was apparently "unavailable" due to the demands of the hotel party nights and lack of the ingredients. The man who was on duty offered lame excuses for the lack of forward planning/lack of stock, but was seen to be avidly stuffing himself with crisps in front of the guests. How on earth can we recommend Kinross to tourists whilst this "It's nothing to do with me/ I couldn't give a monkey's attitude." I was ashamed to have taken my daughter and her partner there to showcase how good Scotland is, only to have to them experience such abysmal apathy to guests. Thankfully we took them to St. Andrews before they left to show them how some hotels actually value clients. They (and we) can never recommend the Windlestrae again due to this. It's sad after 30 years here you suggest to tourists to get out of town. Windlestrae please improve or move!

We arrived on dec 27 th .
We checked in Receptionist nice and helpful , we had mulled wine and sweet mincemeat pies.
Family room a good size , nice big 4 poster bed . The room a bit dated , and no lift .
There was a free pantomime included in our package over at the sister hotel the Green hotel .
It was Cinderella it was very good and funny , kids loved it too .
The first nights supper was in the Monty's restaurant at Windelstrae the service was very very poor
lots of people complaining to the manageress , we were two and a half hours until we had all 3 courses , we were told there was staff shortages but not told to the end !
There was also free afternoon tea included over at The Green Hotel , sandwiches of our choice ,
cream scones and jam , spot on it was .
The swimming pool was beautiful !
Breakfast was good .
The next two nights of supper was a lot better service meals nice .
Staff very good .

We have stayed several times at the Green Hotel across the road and enjoyed it but it was fully booked for Hogmanay this year, however we were offered rooms at the Windlestrae and we were not disappointed. I have to admit I do prefer the Green but the rooms were clean and roomy. As ever it was the friendly welcoming and efficient staff who made the difference. We were attending a gig across at the Green but we were offered mulled wine and mince pies on arrival and breakfast was fine with plenty of coffee and toast on offer and a complimentary Buck's Fizz as it was New Year's Day. I would agree that the hotel could do with a bit of refurbishment but don't let this put you off if you want a clean room and good service and good value. Although the shower hose did fall apart during our stay!

We arrived on Boxing Day for a three night Twixmas break. Apart from being offered mulled wine and a mince pie on arrival there was absolutely no festive spirit at all. Check in was confusing due to the fact that no-one on reception was quite sure what was included in our break and whether the evening meal was a set price or an allowance. In the end we were assured that it was a set price.
Our room was obviously recently refurbished and was one of the best we have ever stayed in anywhere. It was roomy with a seating area and plenty of storage space, the beds were very comfortable and both the bedroom and ensuite were spotless. The window however was filthy outside.
There is an Italian themed restaurant in the hotel (Monty's) and a fine dining restaurant (Basil's) available at a sister hotel across the road. For the first night we chose Monty's. The food was of a good standard without being spectacular but the service unashamedly poor. The second night we unfortunately chose Monty's again, primarily as I wanted to try the Duck dish.
After a not inconsiderable wait our orders were taken but half way through we were told by the waitress to 'hang on a minute' and she scurried off, only to return some while later with the unapologetic news that there was no Duck left. I ordered an alternative and waited for our wine. And waited.
For some 30 minutes. Until we asked the only member of staff on duty that evening with any concept of customer care if we could have our wine now please. The same procedure followed with our three courses. However, we counted ourselves lucky as we were only in the restaurant for just over two hours. Some diners waited over an hour for their first course, God knows what time they got to bed. At one stage everyone clapped and cheered when some food came out. Oh yes, and I found some raw fish skin on the dish that contained my ice cream sundae. Not a classic culinary combination that.
For our third evening, still numb from the previous night, we elected to dine at Basil's in the Green Hotel across the road. What a total contrast. The staff actually engaged with the customers and looked to be enjoying their work, the service was spot on and the food delicious. Couldn't fault it at all.
As for the breakfasts, (again at Monty's), all I can say is that they were consistent.
The tinned fruit was consistently hard, the cooked breakfast was consistently cold, the toast was consistently burnt and the waiting staff consistently gave the impression that they couldn't give a toss, not bothering to clear away any used crockery from the tables and slouching around with their hands in their pockets ignoring the customers.
On checking out we were disappointed but unsurprised to find that anything above our dining allowance had been billed and it was not a set price as we had been led to believe.
Not a compelling reason to return. And we won't.

Room Tip: Pay the extra and stay at the Green Hotel across the road but f you must go to the Windlestrae ask f...
