Description: Bringing contemporary dining to a traditional building in historic Old Harlow, The Gables is a place to impress a new girlfriend, cheer up a friend or put you in the parental good books. Attractively appointed with dark beams arching over swagged windows and Victorian fireplaces the atmosphere is intimate and relaxed throughout the restaurant and the less formal bar. The menus, whether Sunday lunch or Table dHote, are of the umming and ahhing kind packed with dishes its just impossible to choose between. Examples? Roast monkfish with red pepper sauce or spiced breast of duck with hoi sin... well, we certainly couldnt pick.

As always, great home cooked food, not rushed, good service. Both our son and daughter (age 8 & 11) said it was the best restaurant they've been to, loved the roast and followed this with white chocolate cheesecake.

The old gables with some brighter lights but struggling to become a realistic Italian restaurant.
The owning couple appeared to be on their own with the 3 tables on a Friday night, hardly bustling. The food was poor, a massive plate of deep fried fresh from the freezer squid, too much, rubbery and tasteless. Followed by dreary main courses and then the poorly presented deserts. The owners need to get off their pedestals and go out and visit some REAL Italian restaurants and pick up some tips and note the usually fair priced menus.

I recomended going to this Italian restaurant with friends, but I was very embarased by my recomendation. Service slow, forgot one starter, soup cold, pasta very sticky, calamari salty, prawns rubery. No body came and asked is everything was OK with the food, if they had, perhaps they could have solved the problems!!
Shame, won't go back.
