“Great wedding venue”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 February 2014 via mobile

Me and my wife were invited to a friends wedding and this was the lovely setting for it. Its a lovely old building from the 1600s with an extension for the wedding/function room. There's plenty of parking and it's easy to get to. Staff were very attentive and courteous. The food was delicious. Of course its a hotel for couples as well and we would be tempted to stay here the next time we visit.

We arrived at beautiful picturesque Holdsworth House on the afternoon of Sunday 26th January. It was a joint Christmas and Anniversary gift from our lovely daughters and their families.
When we were checking in we were advised that we had been upgraded to a suite. What a lovely room it was,set over two floors with a cabinet, sofa and tv downstairs and upstairs just about the comfiest bed we have ever slept in.
We went along to the bar where hubby had some real ale and I had 2 glasses of [very reasonably priced] Champagne. We also had a very light lunch of smoked salmon, lemon creme fraiche with Avuga caviar and new potatoes. It was delicious. After exploring the lovely historic hotel and having a little rest it was about time to get ready for the evening.
Before we went in for dinner we sat in the bar and had a free glass of wine [which was part of the deal we had] and sat round the real fire while we perused the menu.
It is a extensive menu with a varied selection of meals. When we had made our decision we found that for a few extra pounds we could have the 7 course tasting menu, which incorporated some of the other things on the menu including the meals we had chosen. It also finished of with coffee and petit fours. It is a lovely meal that satisfies you without over filling you.
So eventually tired, happy and well fed and watered we weaved our way to the very comfy bed.
Next morning we had a lovely and very tasty Yorkshire breakfast before we had to check out and then sadly made our way home.
Thank you Holdsworth House for a lovely stay. I hope it won't be the last time we visit you.

Room Tip: To be honest from what I hear all rooms are lovely

I have stayed at the Holdsworth House many times over a number of years midweek whilst on business in Halifax and it always delivers a consistently good standard, with friendly and efficient staff. The food is excellent, with a good choice for dinner between bar food classics and a good restaurant menu and you can eat from either menu in the restaurant. There is a breakfast buffet but if you want a cooked breakfast it is freshly cooked to order and it's excellent.

we have stayed here several times and have never been disappointed, the rooms are beautiful and the food and service are tremendous.
we have always felt very looked after and as if our comfort is important to the staff and nothing seems to be too much trouble. I would sincerely recommend this hotel.
if it had a pool and fitness centre it would be perfect

Overall very good but would say 3☆ rather than 4☆..
All staff very helpful n attentive n evening meal n breakfast lovely n no complaints.
We had 2 teas which wer intially brought in 1stained/dirty cup. Which was changed althought you would have thought would have been checked first. We had some delicious sandwiches in bar area n carpet was very shabby n well past its best also skirting boards n ledges quite dusty n dirty n didn't look like been cleaned for some considerable time.
Stayed in Ayrton suite (room 16) n again overall very good clean n tidy but skirtings/ledges dusty throughout cold tap fitting turned round with tap, plug didn't lift up to let out water n tiling below sink tatty n bath panel looked grubby, paintwork shabby n needs touching up2 in room.A point worth noting throughout the hotel to be fair..
Overall rather disappointed for £250+ for drinks, scones, evening meal n breakfast.
Won't be rushing back sadly

Dear Steviepud,

We appreciate you taking your time to write a review about Holdsworth House Hotel and your experience with us.

As an independently owed grade 2* listed manor house we regularly invest in making sympathetic improvements to all aspects of the hotel, and conduct routine maintenance and cleanliness checks of the property to ensure that it is kept at the best standard possible.

Following your report regarding the Ayrton Suite we have rectified the issues you mentioned, however please accept my apology that the room was not up to standard on your arrival.

I am glad that in general you found the staff to be helpful and attentive and that you enjoyed your evening meal and breakfast, delivering great service and food are things we strive for. Having said that, I am sad that you feel that you will not be looking to return to the hotel.

If you have a change of heart then please feel free to contact me at the hotel on 01422 232 362 where i will be happy to assist.

This is a good hotel - an atmospheric country house set in fine gardens with attentive and well trained staff. It also has a great restaurant, a wide choice of local foods, well prepared and served - not too much, but thoughtfully put together and a wine list that is reasonable whilst being very palatable. It would be our view however, that the hotel doesn't quite match up to the restaurant.

This is a comment more on the configuration of the place than anything anyone can do much about. When we booked, we upgraded from a 'snug' to a 'standard', but when we got into our room we literally had to check. The upstairs rooms have slanting a slanting roof that make space tight, and we used to have more cupboard space on our narrowboat! It was tight. We managed to see some of the rooms on the ground floor, and our advice would be to go for these, or even, if you feel like it, go for the suites, which are split over two floors. The hotel has the right intentions re wifi, offering it free, no questions asked, but boy was it temperamental! Okay, you could say it was the thick walls, but a few airports would sort that out. We were there midweek and working, and this was a problem.

On the other hand, midweek is probably good. The hotel has 'wedding' written all over it, so, like others have said, check first. As it happened there was a local event on while we were there and the kitchen/serving staff only just coped - luckily we were fairly chilled, but there were a couple of others who were getting agitated.

So, if it was a restaurant alone we'd say a generous four star. As a hotel though it's a mean three star - which to be fair, is close to where where the owners put it (three star plus). Worth it, but be warned ....

Room Tip: If possible, avoid the upstairs rooms in the main house.

Dear Bignickandlittleted,

Thank you for taking the time to review the Holdsworth House Hotel and Restaurant.

I am sorry that you felt that the hotel did not meet your expectations of a four star property, we are independently accessed for our four stars on a regular basis, however as a Management Team we openly welcome feedback from our guests regarding their experiences of our hotel, whether positive or negative, as we find it to be an invaluable tool for catering for our customer’s expectations and continually improving our standards of product and service.

With regard to the complimentary Wi-Fi, please accept our apologies that this was not working consistently for you. We will look in to this issue in order to resolve, so that future guests are not affected in the same adverse way you were.

It was great to hear that you enjoyed your restaurant experience and we hope very much that you are able to take the time to return to us to enjoy again our food and service.

Kind regards

We recently held my daughter's wedding at this wonderful hotel.
The date was booked well in advance, a winter wedding package during the week of new year,
The Christmas decorations were still up and were tasteful and classy adding to our winter wonderland theme.
Claire, the wedding and events manager was always on hand throughout the build up helping with the planning and answering any queries, so a huge thank you to her.
We could not fault the actual wedding day, the room for the service decorated beautifully and the Stuart room for the wedding breakfast and evening reception was just the right size for the top table and 7 large round tables for the guests, the staff were attentive throughout the day, friendly and cheerful, the food lovely, Matthew our designated master of ceremonies did a fantastic job ensuring everything went to plan and guided us all through the day in a professional manner, what a gem along with the team.
Our family and friends were highly complimentary of the whole affair which made us feel really good we had chose such a lovely venue.
Whilst going to wedding fayres prior to the wedding we came across a wonderful string quartet, very reasonable and they played during the ceremony and for 2 hrs whilst canapes were served and photographs were taken, this I felt added a lovely ambiance to the afternoon.
We along with around 20 guests stayed overnight, some like ourselves for 2 nts.
What a treat, the guest rooms were lovely, wonderful breakfasts, cosy open fires in the communal area's, we so very much enjoyed our stay.
If you are thinking about arranging a wedding at this wonderful hotel, think no more just do it, you won't be disappointed.
Although we live quite close we are thinking of staying over again for a special occasion in the near future.

Room Tip: Our duplex room was lovely and spacious, the house doubles also looked very nice and the honeymoon s...
