We visited Holdsworth House Hotel for afternoon tea as a birthday treat for my mum. The tea and cakes were tasty and very nicely displayed, and the ambience of the dining area was lovely with views over the garden (we were very lucky that it was a gorgeous sunny Spring afternoon). However the best thing about the place was the staff we met. Everyone was so friendly and relaxed, it put us at ease too and really topped off a lovely afternoon

Booked on an Amazon voucher, two nights, breakfast each day, £50 off dinner, and cream tea on arrival. Arrived late afternoon, and had a quick, friendly, helpful and easy check in. Stayed in room 7, which was spacious, comfortable, spotlessly clean, and not far from reception. Went down to the restaurant for the cream tea, which was delicious. After returning from visiting family, five minutes before the end of service, there was no quibble or attitude, when we ordered a single serving of food to be split between two of us so it wasn't too heavy on the stomach late in the evening! The ambiance of the dining and bar areas was lovely, decorated and furnished appropriately to the period of the building (Jacobean). The breakfast, served by two really friendly ladies, who couldn't do enough for you, was scrumptious, with all the usual options on offer, but also freshly cooked danish pastries, croissants and crusty bread, a real treat! We can recommend the full English, the drop scones and the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. It was also nice to sit in the lower bar area by the roaring fire, while waiting for dinner. The bar meal was very nice the first night, but the meal we had from the a la carte menu, on the second night was outstanding, and rated alongside, if not better than the meal we had at a two Michelin star rated restaurant at a country hotel in Devon a couple of years ago. The soup and duck starters, the lemon sole and the Bolton Abbey beef were delicious, with the beef just melting in the mouth! All accompaniments and side orders were faultless, even down to the hand made petit fours. This hotel and it's staff definitely deserve it's four star rating. And I would recommend it to anyone. We have had a wonderful two day break. Thank you to all the staff for their faultless customer service.

My husband and I came here for a treat one Saturday night as he was on a Dean Clough cookery course nearby. For the room rate of £145 I was expecting it to be five star luxury. We stay at lots of nice hotels. We might treat ourselves once every couple of months to a nice Malmaison or Hotel du Vin. So we know what to expect for this sort of price. In fact this was probably one of the most expensive places we have stayed in a long time. I can't explain how disappointed I was when I walked into this room. Plain and ordinary. I'd say three star B&B not four star luxury. No luxuries at all in the room. Small room and small bathroom. Outdated. Marks on the walls. No bathrobes or slippers. Small TV in the corner of the room above the tea tray. No ipod dock. No mini bar. Cramped and very basic old fashioned bathroom. Just basic shampoo and shower gel but they couldn't stretch to conditioner and body lotion. I had expected they would for the price so I didn't bring any. At the least I expected a full complement of Molton Brown goodies for £145!

I was hoping that breakfast might blow me away to make up for the poor room, but again I was disappointed. The scrambled egg was inedible and the beans were luke warm. But the sausage was nice.

This hotel should be charging around £70 per night for this standard.

The only positives I can offer are that the evening meal in the restaurant was good and the reception staff were great too. But that's it. It represents such poor value for money it's unbelievable that they have the cheek. I suppose it's because they know they can fill most of the rooms with wedding guests. In fact don't even get me started on that! We hardly got a wink of sleep. Our bedroom was on a long corridor which seemed to be the main thoroughfare for party goers at all hours of the night.

In summary - don't pay more than £70. Otherwise you will be as disappointed as we were.

Dear Melissa2311,

Thank you for taking the time to review your experience of Holdsworth House Hotel at the beginning of March.

Primarily may I say how sorry I was you did not enjoy your stay and that you felt our rooms did not meet your expectations. We take all your feedback on board and will look to enhance our offering for future guests so that expectations are met or exceeded.

My understanding is that during your stay you highlighted your disappointment to one of our Receptionists, who as a result reduced your accommodation rate by 20% which you apparently were happy with, it appears that this was not the case. We constantly strive to ensure that we provide value for money in a tough trading climate, both in terms of product and service and it is sad that we did not achieve our goal on this occasion.

I do very much hope that you will take the time to return to us in the future to see the changes we make and to truly enjoy your experience with us. If i can be of any assistance please feel free to contact me directly at the hotel (01422 240024).

Kind regards

Richard Christie

The hotel and restaurant are excellent in every way, the menu was amazing. If you want a romantic break or as we did invite family and or friends to join you for dinner it is a must. There is no need to book a restaurant in town. The staff are extremely helpful.

Just got home having had lunch, together with seven other people, at this lovely hotel. We had the Host a Roast lunch in a private room - the De Aldworth room -where a log fire had been lit. The 3 course meal was delicious and the staff very attentive.

We've been here several times and with a very young grandson "Leo" in the area, expect to stay quite frequently. Last week we were in room 34, a superior double, and the bed was extremely comfortable. Only downside was the WIFI and not simply in the room, but in public areas such as reception and the bar where it was alleged to be at its strongest but my computer couldn't pick up the internet. The reception very willingly helped out by finding the train times I needed.

However, it's another young lady named Emma who was on duty the next day when I was waiting to check out who I watched and listened to handling what I can only describe as a difficult customer with commendable skill and patience. This went on for in excess of 10 minutes and Emma was very cool and empathetic throughout. What an employee!

Dear Ricahrd G, thank you so much for choosing to stay with us again. You must be enjoying your trips to see your grandson! We are sorry you experienced problems with our wifi. We have been assured by the technicians that we have the maximum bandwidth, yet when the hotel is busy and many guests are downloading large files, films or such like, unfortunately it might mean that other users sharing the wifi notice a poorer signal. We do hope that you'll continue to stay with us and we very much appreciate the comments made re Emma, who will be delighted to get a personal mention.

I don't think I have ever stayed anywhere where the staff were so professional and friendly. They all seemed to go out of their way to make you comfortable. The food was great, especially the steaks, though my husband was a bit taken aback by the tiny desserts. Our 'snug' room was comfortable and perfectly adequate. Only let down was the slight scruffiness eg worn carpet in bar and battered, dusty furniture in dining room. Overall, felt really well looked after in a lovely setting.

Thank you SGrant for your review of Holdsworth House, I am pleased that you had a lovely stay and you felt thoroughly looked after. We were a little bemused re your comment on the bar carpet, as it is relatively new and chosen to be in keeping with the historic manor and antique furnishings. That said, we are truly appreciative of your custom and hope you'll be back for more very soon.
