Room was fine nice and airy not very spacious and I upgraded. Bathroom disappointing- rather small and basic.
Restaurant was rather nice and the food well executed.
The bar closed early and no concessions to residents which surprised me.
The outdoor seating pre dinner drinks is lovely and recommended.

We stayed at Holdsworth House for 2 nights in July for a family wedding. We stayed in a double room, the rooms are relatively small but well appointed and nicely furnished. Our bed, although very high was extremely comfy and thanks to that and the black out blinds we slept really well. Despite the high temperatures the room remained cool thanks to a large Velux window which could be kept open and this was a nice surprise given the age of the property. My only compliant about the room was that the bathroom flooded quite easily, the showers are extremely powerful which is wonderful but the shower screen didn't really contain all the water and spray and we found ourselves having to mop the floor with a towel. Breakfast each morning was great, a full English breakfast served reasonably quickly and there was a choice of fruit, cereaks, croissants etc too.
As a wedding venue Holdsworth House excels, the grounds are beautiful, the food is lovely and the staff are very efficient and happy to help however they can, they work tirelessly and over long hours and should be commended. The only reason I gave the hotel 4stars and not 5 is that this hotel is almost a victim of its own success, the hotel provides dinner to non-residents, does afternoon teas and holds weddings as well. When we arrived on the Friday there was another wedding taking place and I did feel as though we were intruding slightly. As the hotel is quite small, I would imagine if I'd gone for a quiet dinner or relaxing afternoon tea and there was a large wedding on at the same time utilising all of the grounds and a lot of the internal space I would find it off putting. However, if you catch this hotel on a quiet day I don't think you could have any complaints.

Attended a wedding at Holdsworth House, and for all its positive’s I’m afraid I had to post a negative comment. The managers really need to take note of this criticism and get their act together from what I’ve also read since eating here. But first, the positives

• Amazing venue
• Lovely gardens
• Friendly, helpful staff
• Lady who was organising the wedding did a brilliant job and was very vigilant

Now, the negative

Was served possibly THE WORST ‘meat free’ meal that’s been put in front of me for years. The other guests plate arrived piled to the hilt with roast beef and trimmings and then came our
non-meat main course. You’ve never seen such a sorry sight in your life, and neither had the rest of our table, who were vocal in their sympathy and condemnation, especially bearing in mind this is a 4* restaurant/wedding venue. Firstly, this was a starter sized portion (which turned out to be a blessing). Secondly, cous-cous (a grain you associate with light and fluffy) was like a compacted ‘quenelle’ of tasteless grey mush. The cous-cous-mush-mush was accompanied by the meal’s ‘nugget’ of a canned tomatoes, reduced down to a ‘sauce’ so heavily salted it was barely edible within which there was 1 cube of what I believe may have been aubergine? A few rocket lettuce leaves were thrown around as presentation, and of course there was the obligatory swirl of sticky balsamic, whose role it was I guess, was to disguise the fact we’d just been served
second-rate ‘don’t worry about their only veggies’ garbage and/or that the ‘chef’ didn’t have a clue how to put food together that wasn’t meat led. Pudding was lack lustre, de-frosted berries which a dollop of vanilla ice-cream in a brandy snap basket, quite hard to snap at that density! Nearly broke my plate trying to break through it.

We were so hungry after the meal we ordered some asparagus with a duck egg, 3 small asparagus spears, one small egg, nicely presented on a side plate, £10 each!

The chef needs to up his game, not everyone eats meat these days. There are over 3 million veggies in the UK and millions more people who sometimes chose non-meat food options for health reasons. River Cottage VEG, by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall might be a good starting point for the chef, and I’m going to post the kitchen a photo of the vegetable cous-cous I made in consolation the next evening as a quick guide to what good meat free food can look and taste like when a modicum of effort is thrown its way.

On an end note, this was a fabulous place to attend a wedding in all other respects. Some parasols in 30 degree heat would make a welcome addition for overheated wedding guests.

Just returned from a two night special offer break. Splendid old building but stylishly and comfortably updated to provide a good level of accommodation at a sensible price (even without the offer!). Stands in lovely.well maintained gardens and overall is about as good as most people could wish for. Attentive and very pleasant staff
Complimentary cream tea and glass of wine were much appreciated but not as much as the surroundings in which they were enjoyed . Strongly recommended. Our thanks to the Management and staff.

We wanted to meet up with some Lancastrian friends for a meal and over-night catch-up, Holdsworth House turned out to be an excellent choice. Our rooms were available from 1pm so we were able to drop our bags off and head out to Bronteland for lunch. On our return there was help-yourself wine, and cream scones and tea to keep us going until dinner!

Time for a wander around the wonderful old building and it's small but immaculate gardens.

Despite earlier Tripadvisor comments the bar and the old hallway are both great spots for pre-dinner drinks - the Whitbread Pale Ale is excellent stuff, if wind producing! Four different starters and four different main courses all of which were deemed superb. Try the ginger-bread ice-cream as a finisher.

We also had room 6 and didn't find one dog hair (see Excellent Dog friendly hotel). Forgot to tell the staff that ITV wasn't working on the TV before we left but perhaps they'll pick it up from this report.

A full Yorkshire breakfast in the morning completed a great stay.

And finally the staff. A great bunch - happy, smiling, can't do enough for you with a great Yorkshire warmth.

So why not 5 stars? Well for Halifax and the area this would get 5 stars, but being a tight Yorkshireman I don't give the 5 star badges out easily.

Go book and see for yourself.

Room Tip: Check that there isn't a wedding on before you go! Low number rooms will give you an easily acce...

Dear Will_Of_The_North,

We are glad you enjoyed your stay at Holdsworth house. Thank you for your excellent comments and be assured that these are always passed onto our team, who are always pleased to get positive customer comments. I am sorry you had trouble with your TV and Housekeeping has subsequently resolved the issue in the room you stayed in. I am also sorry we did not achieve the full 5 star recommendation and hope that you return to us soon so we can strive for that goal.
PS: The Pale Ale served in the bar is Withens from a fantastic little brewery in Hebden Bridge called Little Valley Brewery you can buy the beer on their website.

This hotel is full of character and history, it is charming and has friendly helpful staff and there is a very relaxed atmosphere. On the practical points the beds are very comfortable, not too hard as most hotels I have stayed in. Extremely clean with everything replenished every day. The food is very good and the service is great. It is slightly rough around the edges and there wasn't much room for hanging clothes but if you can get over this you will have a wonderful stay. We will be back, we loved it

The dinner was excellent quality and made better by the service received. The venue was holding a large wedding so we were the only ones in the dining room but it felt intimate rather than awkward. Would definitely dine there again!
