Owner description: A Museum since 1887, Bankfield tells the story of Halifax and Calderdale, using its rich and diverse collections. Set in the attractive surroundings of Akroyd Park, at the centre of Akroydon model village conservation area, this Victorian mansion was the home of local mill owner, philanthropist and MP, Colonel Edward Akroyd. We are a short distance from the centre of Halifax, with free parking and close to public transport links. Bankfield's exhibitions cover local history, costume, art, toys, military history, jewellery and textiles from around the world. Our collections contain objects from Ancient Egypt through to the 21st Century as we continue to collect and preserve items for future generations

Just visited this museum, what a treat, tremendous amount of information and displays of war, lots of recorded conversations to listen to, plus a wonderful display of varied photos from camera clubs, plus many other displays. Staff were very friendly, well worth a visit

Took my 3 year old to the Bankfield Museum for the first time to see the Pirate activity and it was brilliant. Any visit with my son is usually a quick run around, however the activity arranged for this event was great - the pirate story telling being the best part - my son volunteered and he loved it. Pirate No beard who ran the session was brilliant with the kids, very funny, adapting to a 3 year old not following directions and the session was great for both parents and kids. Was such a fun activity, we loved it!! Looking forward to going again

We Visit the museum regularly for exhibitions throughout the year. The museum generally is informative on The Ackroyd family who were the mill owners of the time and whose former home the museum is housed in. It is very informative for a slice of local history around the textile trade,
and also for the house itself and the local Duke of wellingtons regimental museum housed with the building which is good for locals and military enthusiasts alike.

Go and across the road from the museum to see Ackroyden village a purpose built village for the mill workers of the time. The village is still lived in but the architecture is interesting to view and the nearby cemetery which is of Victorian age also tells its own story if you look at the graves. The museum has unfortunately lacked investment in recent years and the building is in need of refurbishment but that said it is still an excellent day out with plenty to see and learn.

Bankfield is an art gallery and museum. Shame it is now closed on Sundays but still worth a visit. It has various rooms dedicated to different things, a local regiment, textiles, history of the place, and changing art exhibitions. You could spend a few hours here and they also have a great selling exhibition near Christmas with lots of unusual gifts to buy. The grounds are really just a large park and not too exciting though.
