“A gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 February 2014

Don't be put off by the filthy black exterior of this building. Perhaps they have decided that one building in this town should keep the filthy colour of years gone by, whilst all the others have seemingly been blasted back to their Cotswold stone (beige) colour, making the town´s architecture now a delight to view. Inside the church is a wonderful array of memorials and history, so allow a good 40 minutes to view it. My parents married here - alas it all ended acrimoniously 15 years later!.

“Great historic church”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 November 2013

Well it is a church so you would have to be into churches to enjoy a visit. It was recently elevated in status to a minster and has a regular programme of events throughout the year mainly pertaining to the arts. The architecture however is very interesting and you must not miss the gargoyles on the outside of the building

“Facinating historic building”

The Minster has an incredible atmosphere and is steeped in history. You can wander round on your own, but I can highly recommend an official tour and a visit up the Minster tower.
It is a real hidden gem.

“A characterful parish church with some fine furnishings”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 November 2013

Halifax Parish Church became a Minster in 2009, recognising its historical status and role in the life of the town. Completed in 1438, it was significantly restored by Gilbert Scott in 1878, which seems to have been a more enlightened Victorian restoration than usual. The dark stone and lack of natural light, together with the layout of the church as an interesting collection of nooks and crannies, contribute to its distinctive atmosphere. Features not to miss include the 15th century font cover, the 17th century box pews, the east window which won the stained glass prize in the 1851 Great Exhibition, the Wiliam and Mary altar rails, and the organ, based on the original instrument by the celebrated builder, Snetzler of 1766, and rebuilt by Harrison in 1928. This valuable instrument is currently the subject of a major appeal, and an organ recital was taking place during our visit, enabling us to enjoy the sound of its 250 year-old pipework.
