“lovely hotel right in the middle of town”
Reviewed 16 June 2012

I have just come back from Halifax on a 5 day trip with work. I found the White Swan Hotel to be right in the middle of town, it's surrounded by good places to eat and it was exactly what I needed for the week. The check in was smooth and quick and the staff were all so friendly and my opinion of them never changed throughout the week. My room was a small double but it was spotless and the bathroom was also nice. The room looked out over the back alley way behind the hotel and although there was no view I was glad because it was very quiet at night and I heard from other guests that their front rooms were a bit nosier due to them looking out onto the main -street. Breakfast was very good value for money - with a cold bar in the middle of the room with fruit juice, cereals, muffins, nuts and fruit. There was also the option to order a hot breakfast and this was also popular and very tasty. If you are staying here and you are looking for places to eat for diner, I really recommend "Ricci's Place" which is just around the corner and also "Red Pepper" which is again just up the road from the hotel and was also very good value for money and the food was excellent. There is also "Julios" Italian Restaurant which is attached to the hotel and again, was very good. I would recommend the hotel to others.

Room Tip: If you are not interested in a view - ask for a back facing room - it is very quiet at night.

I stayed in this hotel coming up from London for work on a Thursday night but got no sleep due to very noisy and constant groups of people shouting and loitering right in front of the hotel until 3am in the morning.

The next morning I asked if this was normal and they basically explained that it was as it was the city centre. They advised me that next time I should request a back room.

Funny thing is if they knew this was the norm, and clearly they did, why didnt they give me a back room to start with? The hotel was empty as well so I can only take this as discrimination towards any outsiders.

I guess Yorkshire really do see themselves as special. Who would have thought?

This is a difficult review because this is an odd place to stay but the staff are really friendly. The hotel is in the middle of Halifax and is a good location for the centre of town. It has a certain grandeur from the outside and the service on the front desk is very friendly and informative. The rooms are a bit odd as they are certainly large but probably reflect the situation in Halifax where there is not a great deal of money and the hotel has cut its cloth (ironic for Halifax) accordingly. The tiles in the shower are plasticy and there is nowhere to put your soap and shampoo when showing however the shower is very good. The furniture is cheap veneer but remember this is a 3 star hotel and the beds are comfortable and rooms a good size.

The food at Julios is pretty good. The pizza was very good but he olives OK. Also the glass of merlot as pretty good. Breakfast was standard fare but tasty. There was a selection of cereals and fruits plus juice coffee and toast. There is a ht selection but I skipped it. Also the staff at breakfast were very friendly.

Overall I would recommend even though you have to negotiate the maze of corridors to get to your room. The staff are great and although the room are just average it still is Ok for a functional hotel in Halifax. Food is pretty good and Julios is a decent if not outstanding. There is also a gym room but I did not manage to get there.

Just stayedat the White Swan for a girlie shopping weekend. Nice hotel. Very central. Room was huge with a double bed and a single bed, there was also a lounge area with a settee so you could sit and watch tv if you wanted. Very light and airy room with 3 windows and normal lighting, that you could actually see to put your make up on. Brekkie was good and you were served by smiley friendly staff, so that was a good start to the day. The evening meal in their italian restaurant was superb and very reasonably priced. Plenty of other customers dining, not all resident in the hotel, but this made it bustling and with a nice atmosphere. Stacey on reception was genuinely nice, friendly, warm and welcoming. She would be an asset to any hotel business. nothing seemed too much trouble. On the whole, we had a very pleasant stay at the Swan and would happily return to that same hotel should we ever be in Halifax again. My only criticism, and I would prefer this to be seen as 'constructive', the single bed in the room would've looked so much better with a valance sheet on it as the bed base did look a little 'worn'.Other than that, I cannot fault it.

Central location, no views but handy for town. Basic comfortable room with a very comfy bed and all amenities. Nice bath and shower. Good selection on the tea tray and plenty too, no need to ration your cuppas! The breakfast was brilliant, a huge choice of continental, unlimited drinks and toast and a full English cooked to order and preference. The best thing about this hotel was the staff. The young lady on reception was lovely, welcoming and helpful. The breakfast waitress was beyond nice and very busy. The night porter was friendly. Our car was parked for us and we had free town parking for the next day even after we checked out! I have paid more and received a darn site less in the past. Well done White Swan.
