Eat on Friday - Early Bird Menu - Dine before 7pm and you get 1/2 bottle house wine per person + 25% off bill (when ordering 3 courses).

Maybe it was the time, but the place lacked atmosphere - feeling a little bit "clinical" despite being housed inside an old mill.

Got a complementary all day breakfast as an apitiser (don't worry - came in a small coffee cup - beaked beans, 1/4 boiled egg, bacon & tomato!!

Dishes are very well presented, and whilst not miniscule in size are not overfacing either - so there was no waste and we left feeling full but not stomach bustingly full.

Not sure if the place has had a bad write up recently, but did find it a little obtrusive that staff came over far too frequently (must have been at least 1/2 dozen times during the meal) to ask if everything was Ok - also when ever wine glass got close to empty - they would come over and offer to fill it up. Now this isn't really a complaint, I'm sure they mean well and some people like this level of attention, I just found the frequency with which it happened a bit offputting.

That said, the food was devine, well presented, came served on plates that had been warmed (always a good sign - haste food served on cold plates). Also got a complementary desert (after the chosen one) so essentially a 5 course meal + bottle of house wine (very nice actually) for £ 77 which was reduced to (c) 57 after the 25% discount!!!

I have been to all the restaurants in Halifax, and the Design House is easily the best place within 1 mile of the town centre.

It is far superior to Ricci and Capone's (yes I have eaten there too!)

The setting looks a little unpromising, within a mill complex that William Blake must have had in mind when he wrote "Jerusalem". Inside it's all bright lights and stark (Philippe Stark) furniture.

But the food is something else!

Currently you can get 2 courses for £10 if you dine before 7.30 Monday to Thursday - this is their limited choice "Credit Crunch" menu. It includes excellent bread and free chef's compliment (amuse bouche). But there are also lots of more expensive a la carte options.

This is serious cooking at very close to Michelin star standard.

Parking is easy in the evening, but almost impossible at lunch time. But it's only a 5 minute stroll from the bus station.

Other options in the area:

Holdsworth House - beautiful setting, all Jacobean oak panelling, good value early evening, cooking a little inconsistent.
Afternoon tea not a patch on the Devonshire Arms at Bolton Abbey.

Mill Bank is probably the best cooking in Calderdale, but it is 6 miles out of Halifax. You will need to book weeks in advance for Sunday lunch.

Travellers Rest, high above Sowerby on top of the moors - follow the aptly named Steep Lane - also does an excellent Sunday lunch.

Also good, but all a few miles out of Halifax

The Old Bore, Rishworth

The Shibden Mill Inn, Shibden

Bentley's, Shelf (highly competent, but unexciting cooking)

Gata Negro, Ripponden - some of the best tapas you'll find anywhere, and that includes Madrid, Seville and Barcelona!
