“national coach holiday”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 May 2012

friendly welcome, efficient check in. Informative re times of dinner and breakfast etc. Great position set across from seafront, overlooking pier and winter gardens(which was closed) but lit up on an evening which was pleasant. Room very basic(but £59 each for coach trip, bed and breakfast and 3 course dinner and free entertainment we were not expecting the ritz!)Yes, creaky floors, but you too would creak if you were that old! Met some lovely characters staying there. For all age groups(we are late 40's) Food was served efficiently and hot which was impressive as staff were kept very busy tending to fusspots!!(some people just expect the earth dont they??)Our waiter was Rui, very polite, smiley, nothing too much trouble, i did tell him what a good job he does, which i think he appreciated. All in all a good relaxing break, would stay at Carlton again but possibly book a superior room as the pictures of that room look much nicer than the standard rooms.........Thank you.

Room Tip: go for superior room unless you not expecting perfection. Sea view room a must. good outlook.

Dear reviewer, thank you for taking the time to review your recent visit to the Carlton hotel. Your positive thoughts on the hotel is what we strive for, the team here will have big smiles at the next managers meeting. This will then be passed on to all the team and Rui as you mentioned.

The hotel is in a great position with great service and the superior rooms are an upgrade on the standard rooms for those who want a little more. Once again thank you and we hope that you visit us again, and opt for the superior room.

Best Regards

stayed at the carlton for one night dinner bed breakfast excellent value meals were promptly served by polite and efficiant staff not very big portions but well cooked and hot bedroom was basic and clean slept like a log after a long journey and a long stay in the bar the only downside to this welclming hotel was that the entertainment was in the basement down two flights of stairs and no toilets down there not good for those ofus with mobility issues would stay there again but for longer the main shopping area in the town opens late on a sunday not enough time to get there and back in time for the coach leaving at 1oclock we visit lots of bay hotels with national holidays and this was the best regarding efficency staff and friendly welcome lynne c

My wife and myself stayed for a weekend ( May 12) Our room was on the second floor and we had a sea view, that was all that was available on booking. This room cost us an extra £36.00.

The room wasn`t worth it. The floor was so noisy and creaky. The people below us must have suffered as we did,our table partners had the room directly above us. Every time they moved around it was nothing but noise. Dreadful, but that`s not all. The floor from one corner to the other has a drop of about three inches (75mm). The doors (Main and bathroom) had a gap at one end of two inches (50mm). After arriving and getting unpacked I went into the bathroom in my socks and immediately slid across the floor ! No kidding.

The beds were appalling. No support in the mattresses. We had to put the counterpaine, folded twice on top of the mattress in order to obtain some comfort. We did not have one night of unbroken sleep as the beds were so hard and uncomfortable. This ruined our weekend. Thank goodness we didn`t go away for a week.

The Dining Room,Lounge and the bar area are all very nicely appointed and quite cosy.

The chap on reception when, we returned and requested our room key, got a bit flustered as he was doing a booking at the time. I offered to wait, but no, he got the key but was a bit tetchy. Not a good impression I`m afraid.

The food is ordinary everyday food,no complaints with that,we eat ordinary food all the time.We enjoyed all our meals also the food was always hot, a nice surpise. Breakfasts were very nice and one morning I chanced scrambled egg on toast, very enjoyable. Scrambled egg can be very hit or miss but this was nice and moist, not dried out.
I had to look to see if the table staff were on roller skates, they are very quick and with taking orders and bringing the meals to us no time to engage them in conversation. No rapport, pity.

The bar is quite cosy and always comfortably warm. Believe me after a walk on the front at Great Yarmouth you need a bit of warmth and this is the best place to come back to. The lounge can be a bit chilly as the main doors open onto the room. My wife and myself came in from a walk, feeling chilly, we closed the door, only to be asked by the man on reception to close it as HE, was feeling too warm ! I reminded him we are the paying guests and we`re cold. The same man on reception.

During the day, the problem with the bar is service. The person on reception covers the bar and takes orders for tea, coffee, snacks etc on top of trying to do their job as receptionist. Not a very satisfactory arrangement. I call it understaffed. We ordered tea and teacakes from, you`ve guessed it, the same receptionist who once again was busy laying out room keys for the arrival of twenty two guests. I know, because I had time to count the keys. So,we waited. To be fair to the receptionists they are covering too many areas. Not their fault. The fault of the company as I see it. All the other Shearings Hotels we have stayed at there has always been at least two people on duty on reception. I`m not criticising the receptionists at this hotel only the undermanning of this vital post.

Would we go back.No. Because the beds are unsleepable. The floors are noisy and creak as soon as a foot is placed on them.

Would we go back.Yes. If the above problems were sorted out. They could begin by rebuilding the hotel. Because the staff are nice people being expected to do too much. The food was very enjoyable andthe atmosphere was most convivial. Oh yes,the entertainment. We only managed one evening,Saturday, the entertainment was really good and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

To those of you who read this review, I hope I have given a fair and balanced appraisal of our visit to this hotel. We are ordinary people in our seventies. We do understand that in the present economic situation companies have to adjust their manning levels. Having said that we do feel that we had very good value for our money.

Come on Shearings, give the receptionists a bit more support in the reception area, after all they are first people we meet. First impressions and all that.

Thank you for your comprehensive review on your recent stay. I have taken all of your comments on board and will be dealing with them to make improvements where necessary. It seems that service was not an issue and that it was the fabric of the building that you felt let the holiday down. I hope that you do decide to return to the Carlton we are presently refurbishing some bedrooms and will be addressing some of the issues that you have mentioned as we go. Staffing levels are sometimes hard to manage once again I have taken this on board and will review at the next Manager’s meeting.

Yours truly,

We have stayed at this hotel several times now and always enjoy our stay. The hotel is around 170 years old and holds a lot of character. It is in a perfect position in Great Yarmouth, surrounded by all activities for all weathers. The staff at this hotel are excellent and make the hotel. It is always an enjoyable stay here. The rooms are comfatable although the hotel may appear to near some work they are constantly working to improve things. Every time we visit they have decorated or changed something. So things do get done. The food is percfect 10/10 and the bar staff excellent. The reception staff are most helpful, friendly and polite, always helpful.I couldn't give a special mention to one member of staff because this is a perfect team and every one of the staff deserve a special mention. Thank you to you all for a perfect stay yet again. We will be back In July. Gail and Kevin Champkins 28/4/2012

Room Tip: We always pay a little extra for a seaview room. These are bigger than the ordinary and perfect view...

A comfortable, friendly hotel.
Good value for money.
Rooms very clean and equipment is provided for preparing a hot drink.
The menu is varied and the meals well presented.( Basic not gourmet! but adequate)
Nightly entertainment.
Great location, right on the sea front.
No carpark but free parking available outside the hotel, never had a problem parking.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room, its always worked!

We stayed at the carlton easter monday while friday 13th april.
Our first room was very disapointing, we had requested a room on a higher floor although shearings state that requests are not gauranteed, altough talking to other guests that paid the same has we did and booked a lot later than we did got higher floors we felt this was a little unjust as our room 4 was on the lowest floor available below and somewhere behind reception down some stairs and some more stairs it was very dark gloomy and icey cold and closterphobic, we went straight to reception to request a change the only rooms available where sea views on the top floor at a £5 each a night suppliment total for stay £40 extra we had not budgeted for so this was a bad start to our holiday.
However the room although was dated and snugg was lovely and warm and much brighter and a very uneven floor surface it was badly tilting so much so a large piece of wood had been placed under the wardrobe to keep it from tipping forward, as you walked you felt as though you were being pulled forward which altough it was funny to us as it felt as though our bed was always pulling us forward it could be a big problem for some people with mobility issues..

The food at the carlton is really lovely and large choice of different menus the salads are lovely and so fresh crisp and clean on the palette all meals were served nice by our waiter Samual he was very professional and efficient he had a lot to do however nothing was to much trouble for him and always had a welcome for his guests, a credit to the hotel.

The entertainment was not to our liking although we do like country and western in fact we like a wide selection of music the singer was disapointing he sang kenny Rodgers with no feeling or soul no warmth or life.
Atmophere in the entertainment room was poor it is below stairs this could be a real problem for anyone unable to manage stairs as the lift doesnt go down to basement.
Drinks were expensensive £3.60 a pint of carling we dont mind paying if it was a good pint however the pint was extra chilled and terribly gassy it may have been old stock that had been super chilled and extra gas to disguise this fact an old trick of the trade.
The hotel its self was right on the front although it was a flat walk along the front it was about a good 20 minute walk to the town centre plenty of shops in town if you like shopping.
We did the trips with Shearings to Cromer and Wroxham which was very enjoyable days out Wroxham was a really pretty place and a nice walk along the waterway very pretty.
Norwich Cathedral not to be missed was is very worth while visiting Norwich very impressive as was Bury st Edmunds Cathedral and grounds very beatiful with gorgous kept gardens.
This hotel is not for people that have any major mobilty issues due to number of steps, stairs and uneven surfaces in the hotel.

Room Tip: request room on higher floors above reception

It sounds that after changing rooms you found it lovely and warm, I’m sorry you found the first room not to your satisfaction and the entertainment was not your cup of tea so to speak. You did enjoy the food and the service from Samuel I will forward you praises to him, which he will be happy to receive.
The hotel has a great location with Wroxham, Norwich and Bury St Edmunds all covered on the coach trips or around one hour drive away, the town centre as you say has plenty of shops.

Having just returned from a 5 day coach holiday by Shearings at the Carlton Hotel Gt Yarmouth, there was nothing we could fault in any way. We had a room on the third floor which was excellent, both in cleanliness and decor. The food in the dining room was superb, in fact every night was briliant both in the choice of food and the amount supplied. Would we return for another holiday at this hotel - a definitely resounding YES. I haven't mentioned the staff - they too couldn't do enough for you and always with a genuine friendly smile - THANK TOU
