“An enjoyable Christmas break”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 January 2014

Spent 4 nights at the Carlton Hotel on a Shearings Christmas break, arriving on 23rd December 2013. I found the hotel to be clean and comfortable, and my room was adequate in size, and unlike some hotels I've stayed in over Christmas / New Year, it was warm throughout.
There were 3 coach loads of visitors staying there, and the very large dining room accommodated all, with only a few empty seats, yet our food orders were taken and served promptly at each meal. The food was always hot and very enjoyable, with sufficient portions.
There was entertainment each evening, starting with bingo, followed by a quiz, then excellent cabaret - all presented by a Kenny Rogers lookalike!
My only niggle was that, being an old building, the floors creaked a lot! As my room was on the second floor, creaking could be heard from the room above when I went to bed, and heard again early morning. A fellow traveller on the same dining room table had stayed at the Carlton a few times before, and therefore always requested a room on the third (top) floor to avoid this. Despite this, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay, and would recommend it and stay there again,

Room Tip: As mentioned, staying on the third floor would avoid hearing the creaky floorboards!

Thank you for your positive review and I am pleased to see that you would not only return to stay again but also recommend us to others. The floor boards are a feature of the hotel and as we complete refurbishment of bedrooms we do address the problem. Once again thank you for your kind comments.

We stayed over the weekend 13 December 2013, our bedroom was a front room. Large. Clean and a comfortable bed
All our meals were to a high standard. Always hot with a quick service
The entertainment was good. Bingo then a short spell of dancing followed by an artist. Kenny Rogers was the compare and bingo caller
My only complaints are that the building is old and tired, requires a coat of paint, and that the TV in our room should be in a museum
Would stay again if we were in the area.

Hello and thank you for your review we are pleased to hear that although you thought that the hotel was old and tired you would still return. We have an ongoing refurbishment programme and tv’s will then be replaced.

Booked to stay three nights , left after two. The food was at times very bad and unable to eat ,no kettle in bedroom, had to ask for toilet rolls for the bathroom, the litter bin in the bedroom had three bags of previous custmers in the bin. This was our first time at that hotel needles to say it will be our last.Booked through Shearings usually their hotels provide excellent service, food and entertainment sadly all was lacking at the Bay Carlton

I am so sorry to hear that you did not find the Carlton to your expectations and surprised with your comments regarding the food, we have great praise from the vast majority of our guests. I will discuss the issues with the housekeeping department and again apologise for the shortfalls.

We spent 3 nights on a turkey & tinsel Christmas trip with Shearings holidays and although it was only just December we had a great time. The hotel is Victorian and as expected it is a shadow of it's former self (as are most hotels of it's age) but it has had a recent partial facelift and it was clean and tidy. Our room was spacious with two windows and a view of the sea and pier. The only slight complaint was the very squeaky floorboards in what seemed like everyone's room including the bathrooms and the red hot radiators. The food was fine albeit pre-plated and the staff extremely hard working, there could have been a few more perhaps at peak times. we had 3 nights of entertainment, bingo, quizzes and singers. The range of beers could have been better. All in all a good short break.

Spent 5days here on a national holiday coach trip with 5 friends.Food was excellent, bedrooms were lovely and clean and staff friendly.Only downside entertainment was down a flight of stairs with no lift, difficult as we had 2 disabled in party, but we managed. The hotel is a distance from town with no bus route, about twenty minutes walk.we all really enjoyed this holiday and would go again.

Room Tip: We were on top floor looked as if rooms had recently been decorated.Did not see any other floors.

Just spent 5 days here and will never go again. There is no access for disabled. 17 of us went for a Turkey and Tinsel holiday. The entertainment was down stairs with no lift. Most of the group had no hot water or heating. All the floor boards creaked. No one seemed interested in helping or even offer a word of apology. This hotel needs a lot of work doing. Never again.

Sorry to hear that you will not be returning to the Carlton, I apologise for the lack of hot water and central heating we did have boiler issues during you stay. When you made your booking you should have been informed that the hotel was not fully assessable to all disabilities and I am sorry that this was not the case.

yours Sincerely

We stay at the carlton at least once a year. For the price you pay it is excellent value for money Yes it is a little rough round the edges but if everything was replaced we wouldn't be able to stay there. the food is excellent, our waiter Jamie is a credit to the hotel .they were very busy but he always had a smile and a few words with us. I would like to say that the gentleman who put a photo of the outside of the hotel is wrong, this is not part of the hotel but are private flats ! our room was at the back of the hotel but was very warm and comfortable. and we were on the top floor so no creaky floors, we have learned through experience that all old hotels have creaky floors. We look forward to our next visit.

Room Tip: when booking ask for what you want , top floor , shower, bath, quiet area, they will always try to a...
