“worth a stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 August 2014

the hotel has a great situation facing the beach, wellington pier, and sea life centre,it has its faults being an old building ,such as all the floorboards seem to squeak, half the hotel seems to be refurbished and half still with dated furnishings
our room was part dull fittings with an antique t v ,and a new bright bathroom with nice fluffy towels, and we must say spotlessly clean
the hotel has a lift but its not much bigger than a phone box,and the stair carpet is the most threadbare i have ever seen, entertainment is 5 nights per week ,not sunday or monday ,the hotel on sunday night was like sitting in a doctors waiting room recommend going out
food in the dining room was hot and well cooked ,staff done as much as possible to please clients in the cramped conditions
our overall view is its still a work in progress but good value for money and well worth a stay

Room Tip: pay a little extra for a sea view ,or upgrade, well worth it

Thank you for your review, I will pass on you praise to the chef and the rest of our team you have mentioned, our hotel is a very grand old lady! our refurbishment programme is on going, slightly slow, due to always being full of new and returning guests, which I hope you will become!
Kind regards

As we have never been to Norfolk we decided to go with Shearings to the Bay Carlton. Great position right on the front facing the sea. We upgraded and the room was very nice, clean spacious and looked like it had had a makeover.Ensuite looked new, water when we fiqured out shower worked was hot, also had a bath to use as well.Room was kept clean at all times.

As in many hotel bedrooms not enough wardrobe space but you can't have everything!!
We were on the second floor and although we did not ask or pay for a sea view we had one!
We had stayed previously in September at The Dilkulsa Grand Ilfracombe another Shearings hotel and were on the top floor. Lift out of action for our weeks stay, and apparently had been broken for months. So did not like the look of lift at Carlton. It did break down, but it was working again in no time well done!! Dining area were we sat was not too bad, staff always eager to please although run off their feet. Food on the whole was good, breakfast a very good choice. Bar area well decorated, nice small outside area overlooking the prom. If doors of bed rooms in corridors had a lick of paint at the bottom of them and carpets renewed it would help.We did not go down to the entertainment, so cannot comment on this. We had good company, and enjoyed our trips out, weather was warm and sunny.Firework display on beach Weds night was impressive. All in all for what we paid it was good value.

Room Tip: Upgrade and ask for sea view.

HOTEL: This grand old lady must have been very elegant in her Victorian heyday. The outside is still very impressive, unlike period properties further along Marine Parade with gaudy amusement arcades tacked onto the front.
The ground floor public rooms are very spacious and well presented. Huge dining room, bar with small outside area and comfortable seating in the reception area. Never went into the basement entertainment venue.
ROOM 116: AVOID!!!
This must be one of the worst rooms in the hotel. It looks out over a flat roof, wall, fire escape and flue, which sometimes emits a continuous droning noise and cooking smells. The shower room is poky and the once-gilded fitments are worn. Some blackening of grouting in shower cubicle.
Plus points; nice white towels and copious hot water.
I had expected room 201 as that is what it said on the booking form. I wanted this room as it had a good review, which particularly mentioned a firm mattress. As the manager appears to have concern for his guests' welfare I even wrote before our visit to confirm this was what we would get. The reason I did this was that on our last Shearings holiday, to Scarborough, we had a clapped out old mattress which sagged right down to the bed base with springs sticking out. On arrivaI I was told that 201 was not the room number but a code, so the first thing I did was check the mattress which was as bad as the one in Scarborough. It was changed for a better one though not a patch on those routinely supplied by Travelodge and Premier Inn.
So much for the brochure claim "Standard Rooms ....with a comfy bed ..."
FOOD: For mass catering this was very good with swift service and cooked food always served hot.
Breakfast - plenty of choice of the usual components for a "full English"
Dinner - this was particularly good with imaginative choices, nicely presented and ample portions. Plenty of vegetables, mostly home-cooked, we were unable to finish it all and I hate waste.
STAFF: Never saw the housekeeping staff but all was kept clean and tidy. The waiting staff were incredibly quick and efficient. They were very friendly and willing despite working under pressure.

On the whole our stay was enjoyable and I should have liked to give a higher overall rating had it not been for the room. I am beginning to come to the conclusion that it is necessary to pay a supplement to get decent facilities and I am not prepared to do that. Not sure if I will be willing to risk another Shearings hotel.

Room Tip: If you are with Shearings I don't think you get a choice

We have just returned from the Bay Carlton Hotel booked through Shearings self drive. The hotel is in a perfect position straight across from the beach. As the same as most Shearings Hotels it could do with updating although it did seem as though they were working on it. Passageways with dated carpets and wallpaper, antique lift. The bedroom we had was a sea view at £49 each extra, it did look as though the paintwork and grouting in the bathroom were both quite fresh, they would make a fortune on Antiques Roadshow for the bathroom fittings although they did in fact work. The bar area looked quite new with minimalistic furniture but again it worked. The dining room room was pleasant but we were packed in like sardines, the waiting staff were run off their feet but did a very good job. The food was average, except breakfast which was lovely. All the staff in this hotel were exceptionally pleasant. Can't comment on the entertainment as we didn't bother,
It should be noted that the entertainment room was down 2 flights of stairs with no toilet facilities, not good for limited mobility.
The big downside ,for us anyway was that there was very little outside space, 3 tables and chairs and as it was the middle of summer this would have finished the day off great.
Perfect position but would not return until refurbishment took place.

Room Tip: Pay for an upgraded room if there are any.

Thank you Patsy 22 Newcastle for your review, sorry to hear you find our hotel "average" I have noted your comments and will do my upmost to action the negative ones! many of our guests return every year, some two or three times, the hotel is under going a refurbishment programme, albeit slow, due to our hotel being full all year, which shows we must be doing something right. I do hope you will come to see us again? you will assured of a warm welcome.
Kind regards

Stayed for long weekend 2 weeks ago. The room was great, one of best we have had in a seaside hotel. Very large with nice bathroom. All the meals were great with lots of choice. We don`t go in for entertainment usually but it was very good here. Ground floor communal areas were kept very clean. Nice attention to detail.

Just returned from a 4 night stay. All the staff are excellent but special mention to our waiter the ever cheerful and hard working Jamie and to the chef and all in the kitchen for producing really good meals. Because of the heat....yes the sun shone every day.....I had a salad every evening and they were delicious, my partner also praised the hot meals. The rooms both public and our bedroom were spotlessly clean and I can see that the refurbishment is coming along well. We had room 203..a twin sea view and it is, without doubt, the largest room we have ever had at a Shearings hotel...just a standard room but with a separate seating area which also housed the large wardrobe, also lots of drawer space in the dressing table, chest of drawers and bedside table. We were able to watch the weekly fireworks display from our room as it takes place on the beach almost directly opposite the hotel.
Although the hotel was busy and there is only the one lift we never had any problems with having to wait for it maybe the people who complained about it only used it at the busiest times.
The small problems we did have (unable to get TV to work and needing a fan in the room) were dealt with immediately and with a smile. All in all we had a lovely break and huge thanks to all the staff.

Room Tip: Worth paying for a sea view.

Recently had 3 night stay. Hotel is centrally situated on seafront close to all amenities. Staff were excellent, polite and helpful. Entertainment was very good with everything from bingo, quiz,, star turns and disco....to which we boogied till midnight! Thanks to the entertainment manager!!! The evening meal was fantastic, with a wide choice for all courses and plentiful. Breakfast was served quickly and efficiently again with plenty of choice. Hotel lounge was light and airy and the refurbished coffee bar/bistro was lovely. Our room was a little dark at back of building but who cares,..we were hardly in! I shall be returning to this hotel...it had everything we needed for a perfect holiday...and the weather was fab!

Room Tip: Choose back of hotel away from seagulls for a quieter night
