“Extremely rude owner”
Reviewed 24 May 2014

Unfortunately I was taken ill just before visiting Culdearn House and so do not visit it. My wife phoned to cancel our booking and she was taken aback by the rudeness of the owner who ranted and decidedly told her off for cancelling at the last minute. How could we know that I was going to be ill? There was no 'I hope your husband is better soon'. He demanded full payment for the bed and breakfast as well as for the dinner. I have had to cancel dinner reservations in restaurants before now and have never ever been asked to pay. Because of my illness we also had to cancel two other bed and breakfast bookings and the owners politely asked if we didn't mind if they kept their 25% deposits and didn't ask for any more money. Now I know that the Scots are as mean as their reputation.
I certainly won't consider booking again when I am next in the area.

We had been holding a superior double room for this couple for 7 months, since November 2013. They booked for dinner, bed and breakfast. In the terms and conditions which were sent to the guests, it states that, in the event of cancellation, we may, in high season, charge the full amount.

On the morning of their arrival (Bank Holiday weekend) we received a telephone call advising that they were cancelling their booking 4 hours before arrival. We asked why, only to be told by the lady that they did not want to drive north any further because her husband was unwell. She said that they were already travelling but had decided to turn around and go home and realised that they would have to pay. We told her that they would lose their deposit (which is non refundable) and she accepted this. On reflection, due to the very late cancellation, we returned the lady's telephone call to discuss the matter only to find that she was already home - some 580 miles away - and not travelling back that day as she had said.

She admitted that they were at home and that 'perhaps, we should have telephoned /cancelled the booking a lot earlier'. We pointed out that there was very little chance of us re-selling the room due to the very short notice of cancellation and we requested her to pay in full.

We are a small hotel and not a bed and breakfast and therefore almost all of our guests take dinner. We cater accordingly each day for our guests' requirements and had included these guests in the purchase and preparation of food for dinner that night. We are understanding people and realise that sometimes a situation such as this can occur. In the 12 years of trading this has happened, perhaps 3 times, and each time we have been sympathetic and guests have re-booked, retaining their deposit, and arriving at a later date in the year.

I can only reprint what I have now read in precious reviews. "The proprietrix is rather cool and somewhat aloof. The proprietor on the other hand is very affable, and his nonchalant almost “happy go lucky” manner is a foil for the Mistress of the House. There are quite a lot of rules and regulations at Culdearn."

We did not stay at Culdearn, but went for a dinner and the host provided a wonderful greeting and all looked to be excellent. Lovely traditional sitting room, well served drinks and nice canapés. But there were many stipulations asked of us when booking, which in hindsight I feel were not needed. The food on the night was OK, but not great and not worthy of the price in my opinion. The many reviews of this location reference the stern manner of the hostess in one way or the other, I have to say to me it borders on rudeness compared to the incredible welcome most restaurants and hotels greet you with in the Highlands. Each to their own, but we will refrain from a return.

? We assisted this group with dinner whilst they were staying in a new B&B nearby. We ascertained that they were from our home town which we had left some 12 years ago so it was nice to be able to chat and to catch up with all the news and events.

We must thank them for the very generous tip and also for the praise for the 'wonderful' meal and 'thanks' for letting them come to dinner.

We would mention that our restaurant is not open to the public but these persons were here for the whisky festival and said all the restaurants were full and could we help.

I want to start by saying we are hotel people and foodies. We don't normally stay in B & B's. When we arrived we carried in our own luggage and were- I will admit it a little worried at the fact there were only 7 rooms (we had 3) and very little help. We went down for dinner and it was astonishing! That one lovely chef/owner could provide a menu and the wonderful variety and freshness of the food was really amazing. We can't say enough about the dinner we had! Salmon, venison, Highland beef, fresh salads and vegetables. Fantastic desserts and after dinner port and scotch. Breakfast was also great.
The sheets had been line dried and smelled like lavender. The beds were lovely. This is not an antique filled B and B but a home with gracious hosts and we truly enjoyed our stay.

Thank you for taking the time to put your thoughts on this site. It was unfortunate that the day you arrived the owner had had a fall a few days earlier and was disabled with many broken ribs so unable to carry you cases. However, help was offered but was declined. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us and thank you for your kind comments.

Booked a night here en route through the Highlands upon the advice of another hotel which was fully booked - had previously skipped past the hotel after reading the less positive reviews here which complained that the hostess isn't welcoming. Very glad we ended up here, however, as we were delighted with our stay - our experience of both host and hostess was excellent; they couldn't have been more accommodating and clearly put guest experience first, from warm greeting, to our surprise upgrade (to the lovely Craigevar room with stunning bathroom - best hotel bathroom of our trip by far, outsmarting the 5* hotel in Inverness!), to attention to detail with meals (carefully accommodating my food allergies to create tasty dinner and breakfast) and suggestions for local outings. I'm therefore surprised by former views expressed on this site - not sure what they were expecting; perhaps the fawning enthusiasm often seen in the US? - and perhaps their more direct and less extravagant approach was misinterpreted as curtness?

This was a quiet and peaceful stay, as the only guests - it would have been easy for such a small place (essentially a cross between a guest house and a hotel - not in a derogatory sense, but rather you are clearly staying in their home, which is beautifully and proudly maintained) to have cut corners to reduce costs with only one couple staying, but in fact they went out of their way to be professional and accommodating.

Would happily recommend.

We had a fantastic stay at Culdearn House of Hogmanay. In truth it is some where between a guest house and a 'proper' hotel but to be honest we liked it all the more for that. We spend a lot of time travelling in impersonal business hotels and it is lovely to be in a 'home from home' type of place. It has a real personal touch and the owners were really welcoming. We stayed for four nights and had breakfast and dinner every day and the food was fantastic.

Room Tip: Craigevar is a lovely room with a bath. We stayed in Dunrobin which was absolutely fine, but if I go...

A wonderful surprise to dine at Guldearn House - food was delicious and the hosts were wonderful. We were in a large group and every one's needs were catered for.

We also looked at their rooms which looked quite interesting as all rooms have different colours and beautifully decorated.

Would recommend this place to all visiting Grantown-on-Spey as William and Sonia Marshall will take good care of you.

Room Tip: Cannot give tips re good room as did not have the opportunity to stay there. However, would surely...

We booked a room with breakfast and dinner at the very last minute for an overnight stay, but would have stayed longer..
The room was at the first floor, there is also a second floor and no elevator but the owner kindly offered and helped with our luggage.
The living room and a separate dining room are on ground floor , a little small but comfortable.
The room was a twin with comfortable beds, small table against the window facing the backyard, nice bathroom with shower.
The owners are preparing and serving the breakfast and the dinner, taking orders, helping with decisions and offering help with the extensive wine and malt whisky menu.
The dinner was a set menu with 3-4 options each course, well presented and delicious, specially the deserts, summer pudding with berries!!!
Many thanks to the gentleman owner for giving information on a "rainy day to do list" next morning and even calling the Aberlour distillery to make a booking.
Definitely recommended.
