“On the brink of being really nice”
Reviewed 11 September 2012

We stayed for one night at Muckrach last week. Our main feel was that the place was on the brink of being a nice place to stay and could do with some further investment to improve and harmonise the decoration as at the moment it's a bit of a mix of modern secondhand and old scots country house style. The sevice was fine but the waiting staff were not familiar with the local malts etc and couldnt advise which was a shame. Dinner was acceptable but the pre starter soup wasnt reduced correctly and the dinner steak had not been rested and was served with insufficient juice. When I asked for sauce one was provided pretty quickly so no complaint there. Just felt some winning touches were missing. The room was clean but the decor and furniture lacked character and we seemed to be stuck away at the top of the house without period features etc. There may be nicer rooms with more recent refurbs but we couldn't tell. The breakfast was very good and the owner was very helpful in terms of advice on good local walks. I really hope they manage to resolve some of these issues as you can just tell it would be a great little place to stay.

Room Tip: Our room was at the back up a flight of stairs so not good if you have mobility issues.

We could all do with some investment. Two rooms are awaiting refurbishment, and will be brought up to scratch as soon as funds allow. We're always happy to provide off menu items where possible, but tend not to reduce soup, for then it is no longer soup, but sauce. Our meat is the finest available in the area, and since the area supplies the best butchers in the UK it is pretty fine indeed. Our ribeye is at least 28 days hung. It can be served from blue to well done. We recommend medium rare but if a guest wants it incinerated to a crisp we will oblige, ignoring the then inevitable complaints of toughness that often ensue. We are proud of our food offering: It's simple, beautifully cooked with care and attention to detail. Unlike many other places in the area we make everything from scratch - bread, stock, sauces, cakes, puddings, ice cream and soup!

First time in Scotland and really glad to find Muckrach Lodge. Beutifull grounds, big comfy room and the food!! The owners cook and they really care - best steak I have ever eaten and the Good Lady had deer for the first time - it was wow! It's a friendly place and the staff are smiling all the time!! Loved it and will tell my friends.

Room Tip: Room 7 was great with amazing views

My wife and I intended to spend 3 nights in this hotel but were determined to leave after the first night. On arrival we noticed it was all second rate and our bedroom (the best in the hotel we were informed) was murky, curtains off the rails, old furniture, iron burn marks on the carpet, duvet not fitting the bed, dusty and the en suite was unclean with blackened sealant. It was clear that the room had not been cleaned for our arrival as we found clothes in the wardrobel left by a previous guest who left in a hurry no doubt. At breakfast the table no longer had any polish and the gardens very unkempt.
Purports to be 4 star which is a joke.It is overpriced and clearly as the owners are trying to sell they appear to no longer have any interest.

These people were fined for smoking in the rooms. They made our staff cry with racist comments. We asked them to leave.

First time we have eaten at muckrach lodge. Lovely warm welcome and fast, friendly service. Unfortunately that's where the positive experience, for me, ended.
I ordered local mushrooms for starters, which was nice enough, but no where near value for money at £16 (based on 2 courses for £36). My main course was pork fillet with figs and a 'rich jus' ...unfortunately it was an ok cooked pork fillet, dry lumpy mash, a fig cut in 1/2 and broccoli, hugely disappointing and again terrible value for money. We didnt bother with pudding. The wine was lovey, but overpriced.
We holiday in Grantown every year, and this will the only time we visit muckrach for a meal.

We are terribly disappointed to read this review, as we pride ourselves on the quality of our food offerings and believe them to be the best in the area by far. Unfortunately it appears that on this occasion and for these diners we fell far short of our ideals. Unlike other critical reviews I see this one as honest and truthful. We will be contacting these guests and inviting them back to eat on a day when the relief chef is not working, as was the case with their meal on the 30th July. It is unfortunate they chose not to raise their concerns at the time with the restaurant supervisor.

Returned for overnight stay with husband as had stayed in the bothy a few years back with daughter - We like old shooting lodges with character and expect the foibles that come with age and history.
However, sitting in the bar with its lovely barfront and stools and stained glass, I looked over at the fireplace to see some very strange ornaments, big bowl and some weird duck. Just so out of character. Using mismatched light bulbs didnt make for a a good look either.

Our superior double could be lovely but the furniture would have been better in a seventies travel lodge and the bedding was old and flat and lumpy - so sad as the room is pretty with nice view and there was plenty of water which is great and didnt disappoint.

But the handle of our room fell off twice - again a modern brass thing not in keeping with the house.

The two staff members we met were lovely and tried hard to ensure we enjoyed our stay but this building is lacking in some serious cash input and to ask for the room rates and prices for food that they do, needs some consideration.

I see why this is as it is as I believe the owners have put it on the market and I so hope that someone can see the potential and make this place as special as it should be.

Room Tip: Until the hotel has some care and attention, I would not like to recommend the rooms as they are

Thank you for your review. Muckrach is receiving as much love and attention as we can lavish in a business hit hard by the recession. Being on the market has no effect on our continued commitment to quality and improvement. Most can understand that that better we present, the more likely we are to get a good price. And the door handle has been fixed.

This report is on the self-catering Muckrach Castle. It is next to the lodge, but does not belong to the hotel. I stayed at many Landmark Trust properties, but this one can truly compete. It is such fantastic historic building, with an exceptional transformation to a vacation rental. I would go back anytime and enjoy Scotland from this hotel.

Thank you for this lovely review of the castle. As its nearest neighbours we at Muckrach Lodge take some credit for the great time you had there. We keep the noise down at night, we don't park across their drive and we let them put their rubbish bins on our land. We never burn leaves or guests at the weekend and always smile helpfully when castle renters come to the hotel to ask for directions to the castle which they can see from our front door. So thank you again. Next time stay with us - you'll get the one thing you can never get from the castle, which is a lovely view of it.
