“Lovely building”
Reviewed 26 August 2014

The hotel is a lovely old coaching inn right in the centre of Grantham, a really beautiful old building. The is a large free car park behind the hotel.
The smallish bar overlooking the High St was comfortable and had a huge inglenook fireplace and stone bay windows.
We didn't eat at the hotel so I can't comment on meals but the bar staff were friendly.
Our room was unfortunately in a kind of annexe at the far end of the enclosed yard, reached by an outside door. We would have preferred a room in the main hotel but we had booked late on a discount rate so maybe it was understandable!
However the room was comfortable and clean with a large king-size bed and a large en-suite bath/shower room. The room was well decorated and maintained, though perhaps in a slightly dated style.
Breakfast was OK, the usual range of cold buffet. We ordered haddock which was served with a couple of eggs. It seemed to have an odd taste however so I didn't eat mine - but my husband ate both portions without apparent ill-effects!.
The hotel seemed to be generally clean and an attractive place to stay. Staff were helpful. We would stay again - but I would ask for a room in the main hotel!

Room Tip: In main hotel - the back rooms are a bit of a walk if it rains!

This hotel has so much potential, but in its present state is in need of a good injection of money to bring it up to scratch again. It feels as if it has gone unloved for some time and needs a total refurbishment.

The furniture is not too bad, but the walls really need re-painting and the bathroom was in desperate need. The grouting was stained, the wooden bath panel was peeling and buckled and the shower screen didn't fit at all well.

On the plus side the King's Room is something very special and the history alone was enough for me to want to stay here. Can't comment on the food, as we didn't stop for breakfast and ate out at the Eden bistro less than 5mins away which was excellent!

It's certainly not bad, but by no stretch is it great and it certainly has potential for someone to make it special.

We chose to stay in Grantham to break our journey down the A1 and we were lucky to select this wonderful hotel.

Very easy access from the motorway, with ample parking and we were truly pampered.

A quiet, comfortable room with friendly staff and a tasty breakfast

We will use this hotel again and recommend it to all our friends

The room was great, the history of the building amazing and the staff were the nicest people we have met for a long time - genuine, friendly, fun and at the same time professional! To top it all, at breakfast our dog was made a sausage without us even asking so we could disguise the antibiotics he had to take in the morning. We are looking forward to having an excuse to go back! This review in the meantime is a way of saying 'thank you'.

Room Tip: If you come with a well-behaved dog you are made welcome and we had a very spacious room

Stayed at this lovely hotel Sunday just gone. We had the four poster room which was lovely and the bed very comfortable. We had a delicious 3 course Sunday lunch which I cannot recommend more, the beef was excellent! Staff we very polite and attentive and the Kings room is just stunning. Will definitely be staying again.

This hotel has a fantastic history behind it as a coaching inn on the road between York and London - both Oliver Cromwell and King Charles stayed there (though not at the same time!). It does feel a bit frayed round the edges (the blinds in bathroom couldn't be raised, for isntance), but the room was a decent size, and the breakfast couldn't be faulted - no extra charges for something other than bacon and egg (called 'The Angel Delight'); and staff were friendly. Great location; dining room oozed atmosphere; bar habituated by friendly locals. Could do with a bit more investment, but would still recommend.

I am compelled to write a first class review of The Angel and Royal's King's Room Restaurant as we had a superb experience last night. We arrived to be welcomed by the Kings Bar staff and invited to have a pre-dinner drink. We were then taken to our table within the Kings Room Restaurant which in itself is a spectacular room steeped in history - a great setting indeed! We opted for three courses; each of us choosing a different option. Timing was impeccable and every course was beautifully presented by the restaurant staff. The attention to detail was quite apparent and the food arrived piping hot and of a very high standard indeed. I would highly recommend this restaurant and would suggest that you book as soon as possible.
