“Gem of a find”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 August 2013

Booked for one night whilst sightseeing in the area with a friend. The pretty village took no finding - few minutes from the A1 but seemed like a million miles away. On arrival we were given a lovely warm welcome and shown to the Newton cottage which was situated in the car park - just a hop, skip and jump away from the pub door. The room had two extremely comfortable single beds, a refreshment table, flat screen tv and plenty of storage space. The modern bathroom was massive, decorated beautifully and it was a pleasure to shower in lovely hot water.

We ate in the restaurant at night and the food was excellent. Harold [the owner] is a brilliant chef who takes great pride in his ability to please the customers and use locally sourced ingredients where possible. He created me a chicken curry [not on the menu] from scratch and it was superb. My friend was also extremely pleased with her choice - 'delicious' were her words. The freshly cooked breakfast was also delicious.

Cannot recommend the Cross Swords Inn enough. Do not just take my word for it, try a meal at least if you are in the area - you will not be disappointed.

We had been to the Rutland Bird fair on the Saturday booked this accomodation for one night, it was truly beautiful set in a small very pretty village. Tastefully done the buildings next to the pub where we spent an amazing nights sleep in huge bed that was so comforable (better than our bed at home). Bathroom so clean everything looked brand new still. We were greeted by the landlady we were a little earlier than expected, but was not a problem she put the kettle on for us as we were walking into the accomodation chilled out then went over for a lovely evening meal. Breakfast in the morning was just as good too. Landlord & Landlady could not do enough for you would highly reccommend this beautiful place.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Cringle huge bed

We live in Colsterworth and visit here often!! It is the best place for food and service in the area!!! The family that run this little gem are lovely and treat you like friends!! The food is fresh cooked and always lovely!!! As a couple we love the fact that this place takes no children, its wonderfull to enjoy a lovely meal with lovely people and have no screaming kids running mad like so many local pubs!!!!! If you wish to enjoy your meal in great company,in a lovely little village this place is for you!!! Its relaxing to sit outside with a cool drink with no noise or hassle!!!
We always have a wonderfull time here,we will see you very soon!!! Amand and Steve xx

We recently spent a Saturday evening at the Cross Sword Inn, on a business trip to Lincolnshire and were surprisingly pleased by the attention and quality of this Inn.
We had a superb meal with very fresh fish, excellent wine and impeccable service.
We will definitely stay again if we have to go to Lincolnshire again.

The Cross Swords Inn is tucked away in the village of Skillington set in the lush rolling Lincolnshire countryside only 5 minutes off the A1 close to Grantham. We were treated to 5 star hotel treatment in this family run village Inn. Without "gilding the lily" everything about the place was 1st class-ambience, friendliness, cleanliness etc and the food which we had at dinner was prepared using the finest ingredients to the highest possible standards and for big eaters there was the option of quantity. My wife and I enjoyed scampi, salad and chips followed by eton mess. breakfast the following morning was a beautifully prepared banquet.Suffice to say, we returned for lunch on our way back north and once again the homemade steak pie was superb.
All credit to this family business which is run like a well oiled machine and are worthy of 100% in all aspects.
We can therefore only recommend The Cross Swords Inn in the highest possible terms

The food is excellent - plentiful and unpretentious - the beer in well kept, the owners work tirelessly to make sure that the guests are looked after and the service is impeccable - many establishments could learn a thing or two from this couple. There is also accomodation available in the annex. Only wish I had a 'local' of this calibre.
