8 of us stayed for the February Murder Mystery weekend. We did not know what to expect but we were pleasantly surprised by the standard of the accommodation, the food and the staff, including those running the event. The hotel is undergoing some refurbishment, currently (it would appear) limited to the ground floor corridor but this is unobstrusive and did not worry us at all. Our rooms on the third floor were nicely furnished, some with balconies over looking the coast line / golf course. Some of the public rooms were not being used but then again it is a big hotel that, we guess, will offer much more for a summer stay. Altogether a very good value for money weekend break and we look forward to returning later in the year.

Room Tip: Rooms with balcony over looking the coast / golf course

Stayed twice before and find it an ideal location for travelling around the local area. The hotel is very welcoming and the staff are excellent. The rooms are basic and clean with good views if you are over looking the bay. It has plenty of history and charm,i will certainly stay again.

I booked a one night stay for my wife and I on Valentines weekend after receiving an offer via email from Strathmore Hotels. As the price for dinner bed and breakfast was exceedingly cheap, and based on the general reviews on Trip Advisor and the assumption that 'you gets what you pays for', I didn't expect too much.
The building and grounds are huge and yes, it does all look a bit tired. But as you are frequently reminded once inside, this is a work in progress.
Our room was basic, but clean, comfortable and warm and the view from the window of Arnside and Morecambe Bay was spectacular. Superior perhaps not but Sea View definitely.
Downstairs the Jacobean Lounge and bar area was lovely. Again very comfortable and warm with a roaring log fire at one end.
The staff, in particular the young lady who worked tirelessly at the bar all Saturday afternoon and evening could not have been more helpfull. This young lady had a smile for everyone and along with the rest of the team need commending.
Our evening meal began with a free glass of bubbly and then a carvery in the beautiful Hazelwood Restaurant which again looks out over the bay. The food and service was excellent and could not be faulted.
The day was topped off with a disco which happily for us was very 'middle of the road' and was based on a Valentine theme of love songs.
After a good nights sleep we breakfasted in the restaurant and here is my only gripe. The food was cold. This problem is not unique to the Cumbria Grand however. It seems that wherever we go, if breakfast is self service then it is usually cold. Saying that, the choice was enormous; you wouldn't want for anything and my wife who is not as fussy as me, polished her full English off.
To sum up, this place grows on you and has an old time charm of its own. You soon stop noticing the parts that need fixing and find yourself relaxing in its ambience.
Would we go again? Certainly.

Room Tip: Choose a sea view if possible

We booked here for 3 nights for Valentines weekend, arriving on Thursday 13th February and check in was OK but no one to help carry our cases, it was quicker to use the stairs as the lift is very slow. Our room was quite small but had a nice view overlooking Morecombe Bay. The bathroom was very small but clean ( the centre of the cold tap was missing ) a minor detail but shows lack of care. The room was not very warm and the bed most uncomfortable, mattress really does need to be replaced. The Dining Room staff were really pleasant and helpful, food Ok but nothing special. We were disappointed on Valentines night as nothing had been done to make it a special day, no balloons or flowers alathough we did get a bottle of bubbly and a box of chocolates eash in our room on arrival. We have spent Valentines day at the Cairn Hotel in Harrogate which is also a Strathmore Hotel and far more effort was put in to make the day special.having said all that we did enjoy our break away, but had this been our 1st time at a Strathmore Hotel we would not use them again

just been to stay at the Cumbria Grand Hotel , staff couldn't do enough for us the rooms were lovely although the whole place needs a face lift it is what it is and the price we paid for a three night break was fantastic will be going again . stayed here last year whilst playing golf and came last weekend with the wife and both parties enjoyed the break . great location for walks without travelling by car as the railway links you to some of the beast areas in the UK would recommend this hotel i bet the Christmas and new year breaks are tremendous there is a lovely ball room and the grounds and views are stunning

Coach trip-Jazz and Swing weekend!Lovely big lounge/dining room and ballroom but had been closed for a month and was BALTIC! Our room was quite small and relatively warm, but the bathroom needed money spent on it.Balcony door didn't open-maybe just as well! The wind was ferocious! Food was fine (buffet-ish)ie u qd up n were served main course. Live music was average-but the ballroom was Fabulous-wdv bn better if they had not filled half of it with tables.Staff very helpful and polite. Enjoyed weekend but mostly for the dancing.

Thank you for your frank review of your recent stay with us.The entertainment both nights was provided by one of our regular bands who are very much in demand (see previous reviews of New Year) very disappointed that you felt they were only average.
The hotel had been open previously in January and all heating systems were turned on midweek prior to your arrival, it was as you mentioned a bitterly cold weekend, especially with the gale force wind and apologies that you found the hotel cold.
We were very pleased with the Jazz and Swing break, being fully booked for a January weekend and with so many positive comments from the tours and private guests it will be repeated in 2015.
