I think this hotel tries very hard to provide a grand experience. It was in the process of being refurbisded and some corridors looked a mess. However, where work was completed it was very pleasant eg the room and the bar lounge. The dining room is a beautiful period piece;it's enormous and lavish( decor-wise).It has wide tall windows so that the light pours in and the views are sensational. The view from our window and the rater tatty balcony were superb. If you like Grange you'll love looking out across the green plains that lead down to the estuary. In fact if you were staying in a tent at this level(3rd floor) youd love it so a very pleasant rooms makes it out of the ordinary.
Only downer was the noisy male part of a couple who enjoyed shouting at his wife/ female friend? after an evening of booze in the room next door, although everybody else was friendly and polite.
Oh nearly forgot buffet breakfast of a good standard and in quantities for largest of appetites!

On business in the area and this gave me exactly what I needed. Great, unobtrusive service, good food and a comfortable nights sleep. Will stay again if I'm in the area. The only request I would make would be to extend the wi if further.

Stayed here over the past weekend and had a wonderful time. Arrived along with a large bus party and from the start the staff were very attentive. Tamas and the team ensured that our weekend passed without flaw, well done guys for putting up with a rather boisterous group. Although the rooms are dated they only enhanced the oldie worldie experience so if you are looking for modern luxury this is not the place for you. The food was delicious and out of our party there was not one complaint. Service at meal times was fantastic and the staff are like a well oiled machine catering to the guests again well done.

My mother and I stayed here as part of a 3D2N tour package tour to Lake District over the May Bank holiday.

Despite the furnishings of the hotel being slightly worn (but we see that it was undergoing renovation), it was a very enjoyable stay for the price we paid (which was less than £100 per night for a twin room as part of the package tour).

In terms of the location, one has to drive which wasn't an issue for my mother and I because we had transport as part of the tour package. We were given a room with two twin beds which was spacious. The room came with a TV, hot water kettle, compli tea/coffee, hair-dryer, basic toiletries and clean towels. The bed and pillows were comfortable.

The best thing about the room was that it had the view of the river / Morecambe bay, which was really picturesque. From our view, it felt that we were staring out into a postcard so the room was really memorable.

In addition, I have to commend the Cumbria Grand for their very thoughtful house-keeping services. Generally for short stays, my mother and I would not request for house-keeping services (we will leave a "Do not disturb" sign at our door) because we are generally very neat and did not really see the need for our beds to be made or for our towels to be changed. To our surprise, because we did not request for house-keeping service after our first night, there was a small bag of fresh towels, a set of toiletries and a roll of toiletpaper left at our door (presumably to make up for the lack of house-keeping) I am really impressed that the hotel was pro-active to offer us fresh supplies. This is really rare! And this is what I call great service!

It was true that the lifts were a bit slow and could only take up to 4 people at a time but it wasn't an issue for my mother and I. Afterall, we were on a holiday and were in no hurry to get to anywhere. For guests in a hurry and who are well-abled, there is always the option of taking the stairs which should be faster.

The overall furnishings of the hotel were a little worn too but in a way, it gave the hotel a sense of quaintness and history. We saw that parts of the hotel were undergoing renovation so it should only get better in due course.

Breakfast was provided as part of our package and served in the ballroom; my mother and I had no complaints at all, mindful that the rooms were relatively cheap. It was a very filling spread of cereal, milk, bread & pastries and selection of cheese. Hot items included sausages, choice of scrambled or fried eggs, potatoes and bacon. There was a range of beverage choices of fruit juice, coffee and tea and fruits such as apples and oranges were provided as well.

Dinner was also served as part of our package. My mother and I had no complaints as well.

In summary, for the relatively affordable price, I would give the Cumbria Grand a full 5 stars because of (i) the great view we had from our room, (ii) the decent spread at breakfast and dinner (iii) the clean and spacious room given to us, not to mention the very thoughtful house-keeping and (iv) overall comfort and restful stay we had. My mother and I really enjoyed the sight-seeing around Lake District and our stay at Cumbria Grand would definitely form part of our fond memories of our trip :)

Room Tip: Rooms facing the south will get a good view of the river.

We stayed at this hotel in June 2013 and booked again for four nights Mon-Fri. As previous visitors, when booking, we asked for a particular view from our room and the staff were most helpful. We found the hotel frontage had been painted since our last visit in line with their rolling programme of refurbishment - quite a challenge with a large Victorian hotel, (the ground floor corridors were also undergoing decorating). We had a lovely clean, large and well furnished room/bathroom with French windows and balcony. The food was excellent value for money with the option of choosing from the a la carte menu, which we found unnecessary as the set menu had plenty of choice. Starters and desserts were served at table, guests went to a buffet counter for the main course, although I did see a member of staff assisting a lady, who had a walking stick,to carry her plate. There was always a choice of fish dish, vegetarian, carvery, casserole. Breakfasts were very good and the food was hot. There were three coach parties staying, but they were seated away from 'private' guests who occupied a quieter area. We enjoyed our second visit to this hotel (our fourth to a Strathmore hotel) and felt there was a definite improvement since our last visit. The clientele tends to be older people with twice weekly entertainment aimed at them.

Stayed here this weekend gone. Got put in an awful room at first but then got moved in a renovated room which was a lot better. The building is beautiful but needs a lot of money spending on it to bring it up to date.
Breakfast was not bad and hotel was busy
