“Amazing views from a fantastic hotel”
Reviewed 16 June 2014 via mobile

We were looked after so well for our stay here. The views are absolutely amazing and the service was fantastic. Highlight was our history lesson from Jeannette in the exec lounge. We were having a family celebration and every room we had looked over the Tyne bridge. Thank you all

Excellent service, including the concierge who carried your case to the car without asking. Overall, could not be bettered. Great breakfast well worth the extra. Wonderful views across to Newcastle. We stayed for the gin festival and the venue was only a short walk. The hotel also arranged taxis in a very efficient manner

The hotel's lobby, bar and restaurant have a fantastic view over the river side and bridges. This is one of the hotels strongest assets as well as the helpful and friendly service. The only disandvantage is a not so efficient stuff at the bar but I want to assume this was because it was awfully busy. Overall very satisfied with my stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with the river view.

Stayed for 4 nights. Wonderful views of the Tyne Bridge and The Tyne. Not a problem being in Gateshead rather than Newcastle as it's just a walk across one of the many bridges. Used executive lounge which worked perfectly or us. Quiet breakfast and lovely evenings enjoying the views with a glass of bubbly. Staff in the hotel are all friendly and ready to help. Ideal location to explore NE. Area is a little hilly so may not suit everyone. Nice walks along the quayside. Special mention to Kath and Katie in the exec. lounge. Full of advise re the area and they love their jobs. Thank you to everyone at Hilton Gateshead.

Room Tip: Check out special offers on exec. floor. Floor 5.

I last stayed in this hotel in April 2014, having previously stayed there many years ago. However, this review concentrates on the experience in April 2014. The hotel is situated on the River Tyne and benefits from some dramatic views over the redeveloped Quayside area, stretching all the way along to St Peter's Basin, where-after the river bank fades into darkness. The centre centre is but a five minute walk across the bridge, and this is a trip well worth taking as there is very little worth seeing on the Gateshead side of the river.

I had found Hilton hotels to be rather variable in quality. Some, like the Canary Wharf Hilton, are superb. Some, like the Gateshead Hilton, are distinctly average. What really soured this visit was an error made by staff. We were booked in to stay at the hotel as a gift from family, namely my wife's parents had booked us a room for the night. I assume they knew we would be arriving late, or had been given advance notice of our arrival, as when we arrived we were checked in without even having to give our names. I guessed that, with the hotel lobby being so quiet (it was nearly 1AM) and so few guests around, we would be the only guests due to arrive that night for check in.

We were taken to a suite room, opposite the lifts onto that floor. I generally couldn't complain about the room. It was clean, neat and the furnishings were of an acceptable standard, though it was hardly memorable or stylish. It would serve as good base in the city for a couple of days, but hardly the sort of place you would rush back to. The bed was very good, with a firm mattress and the bathroom was particularly impressive; very spacious and clean and equipped with separate bath and shower arrangements. There was also a second water closet, located next to the front door of the suite. The complimentary bathroom products were also high quality items. The room was quiet, with a fantastic view of the bridges over the river. Despite the close proximity to the busy Quayside, very little noise from the city pervaded the suite, other than the occasional drone of police sirens.

The night was somewhat frustrated and spoiled by me receiving a telephone call at approximately 01:20AM whilst I was in bed, having unpacked and showered. I assume I was speaking to the reception desk, though the caller never identified himself, and said that there had been error and we had been checked into the wrong room. Half asleep, I asked the caller what he intended to do, his suggestion was that we be moved rooms. Unhappy with the potential upheaval of having to get up, get dressed, pack and move rooms to simply go back to bed, I stressed that I was already in bed, having showered, so if the hotel intended to put someone else in this room, they would have to think again! The caller said he'd call back, and advised me to wait by the phone. This call never came, and after about half an hour of waiting I fell asleep again.

That morning we enjoyed a hearty buffet breakfast, which was probably one of the better hotel breakfasts one can find in Newcastle, and awaited our lift home in the hotel lobby.

I raised the matter in the morning with the front of house manager, who was handling check outs. He was most gracious in quickly apologising and offering a complimentary gift. It appeared that he was aware of the issue, and was probably expected it would be raised on check out. However, it was apparent he was not aware that I had been told to wait for a call back, which was probably the most irritating thing about the whole affair. I accept that mistakes can and will be made, and I appreciate the efforts of the manager to set things straight.

Overall, I have found it to be a competent and comfortable hotel, but not particularly inspiring. I would perhaps go to a Marriott hotel next time.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the river for stunning night time views.

We were very well looked after. A fantastic night view over the River Tyne from the hotel and plenty of night life in Newcastle. Back to the hotel bar for a cocktail in the pleasent surroundings of the bar. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice.

Stayed for two nights. This was our second visit to this hotel & would have to think hard about going back.
The hotel itself is very nice but rooms are disappointing. The pillows are the worst we've ever had in a hotel room but we were given slightly better ones when we complained. (We were told they have foam - terrible - or feather - not a lot better)& when we asked they had said other people had complained.
The food is quite good but if you're on the dinner included stay a lot of the items on the menu had a supplement. As for a drink with your meal - BEWARE! A bottle of beer & a large glass of red wine cost nearly £17. We were not given a wine list so was probably our own fault as didn't ask the price, but that was ridiculous.

Room Tip: River view. Other side looks on to front entrance
