In November 1841 Tomas Wilson, a poet of considerable repute in Gateshead, opened the Literary Rooms on Durham Road. Created by architect Thomas Oliver of Newcastle and build by Thomas Liddell of Lowfell, the upper section of the building was used as a school for the local children until the opening of a new school on a site at Kells Lane in 1895.The building was taken over by Lloyds Bank which closed in the late 1990's. The Building has now been recently refurbished and opened as The Bank Restaurant and Bar. Providing a New Chef, New Menu and great staff.

“Good Sunday Lunch”
Reviewed 19 May 2014

I have visited The Bank for Brunch and Sunday Lunch in the last month and both experiences have been very good. Brunch was very good value for money with a drink included in the price, fresh and very tasty. Sunday lunch was also very good - on a par with other good lunches in the area - and better than or last visit to Cafe 21! We had starters or soup, salad and black pudding and mains of beef, lamb and chicken - beef was perfectly cooked, tender and all the veg was perfectly cooked - no soggy veg! £12.95 for 2 courses was excellent value we felt.

Will be back again soon!

“Wont be back”
Reviewed 14 May 2014

Havent ate at the bank since the change of owners, but decided to try last night as didnt want to travel into newcastle!

Instead of going into the many things that were wrong with the service last night I will just say... I wont be back, what a shame!

I will take my business elsewhere!

“Outstanding food, service and atmosphere”
Reviewed 13 May 2014

We went to try the fantastic 7 course "Taster" menu and were blown away with the quality of the food and service. We went after hearing very good reports and despite expecting a lot, we still came away very impressed. The venue itself is extremely well presented and tastefully decorated, the staff couldn't have been more helpful or friendly and every course was absolutely delicious, as were the cocktails!!!

We will definitely be going back and can't recommend it highly enough, it's definitely one of the highlights of the area and great value for money.

“Great day!”
Reviewed 10 May 2014

We hired downstairs for a Sunday afternoon get together to celebrate a family 21st. We couldn't fault anything the food was fantastic, the cocktails delicious and the service brilliant. Everyone complimented on what a great day it was. I would definitely recommend it, we didn't get a chance to sit in the beer garden due to the weather but it's lovely on a nice day.

“Fabuous 7 course tasting menu”
Reviewed 8 May 2014

We've just had a lush evening tasting the most gorgeous food at The Bank. As we arrived we were offered a glass of fizz. We were offered the menu & were asked if we did not wish to know which was a great idea so each course was a lovely suprise. We were not disappointed starters, Strawberry gaspatchio mmm & also Chicken celeriac, chicken wing, chicken terrine config egg on celeriac puree, Chicken liver parfait all to share yummy then Amuse Bouche each Plaice & King prawn pickled cucumber seaweed, gorgeous.Mains,Meat,Duck breast duck leg ravioli & carrot & more fab. Fish,Curried cod with cauliflower scrumptious then a Rose martini. Dessert was Cherry & Pistachio crumble & also Lemon & white chocolate, Dark chocolate soil lemon granite lovely then to finish a Cheese board! We have even missed things off sorry . I wish we could do this all the time. Can't wait to go back. The waiters worked so hard I can't imagine what hard work went on in the kitchen. Thank you chef and everyone for a really fab night.
