We visited here for festive afternoon tea with our four children. It was themed around Roald Dahl’s Matilda which was done really well and the children loved it. They particularly enjoyed the newt juice smoothie! It was their first afternoon tea experience and it will be hard to top it, especially sitting in the spectacular heated igloos with the views over the river (slightly marred by the building work that was taking place at the time, I’m sure is now complete). The only unfortunate thing was when we arrived and were shown through to the restaurant we were not told that Father Christmas was only visiting for a certain time slot, and ideally we should’ve been told so the children could pop to see him before we were sat at our table as to their upset when we came to leave and enquired about the children meeting Father Christmas we were informed unfortunately he had already gone home but they’d see what they could do. Someone did then manage to work their magic and one of the members of staff stepped up to the plate so that miraculously Father Christmas arrived again (unfortunately our 8 year old son realised it was one of the restaurant staff that had served us especially as the member of staff was female so the voice didn’t quite match Santa! Luckily he kept quite for the sake of his younger siblings but we had some awkward questions in the car on the way home) we can’t fault the actual afternoon tea, food and service based on this but I will admit it did put a dampener on such a fabulously festive experience. I would recommend and would return but would make sure you check the festive event timings yourself before booking!

Dear myfourcornwallandme,

Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback regarding your festive afternoon tea experience at Fowey Hall Hotel last year. We're thrilled to hear that you and your children enjoyed Roald Dahl's Matilda-themed afternoon tea, especially the newt juice smoothie, and appreciated the spectacular heated igloos with views over the river.

We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused by the miscommunication about Father Christmas's visit. We understand how important and magical that experience is for children. We appreciate your understanding and are delighted that our staff was able to make amends, ensuring your children had the opportunity to meet Father Christmas, even if it required a bit of creative holiday magic.

Your recommendation is valuable, and we appreciate your understanding of the unique circumstances. We look forward to the possibility of welcoming you back, and we assure you that we'll strive to make every future visit as seamless and magical as possible.

Warm regards,
Anna Sirba

I booked to have dinner this evening with my mum. We were served by a young man called Charlie. He had a very pleasant manner and was happy, polite and friendly. He made our dining experience very enjoyable. Would definitely recommend the mushroom rigatoni and the baked Alaska…

This hotel is really dog-friendly unlike many others who make that claim. The dog was allowed everywhere and that really makes for a low tension holiday. There is a securish dog walk immediately in front of the hotel.
Car parking was easy.
The hotel has clearly been extended and refurbished recently. It has been well done without losing character. Excellent outdoor pool and new spa facility.
Our room was in the new wing and had a good sea view over a Juliet balcony. Very unusually someone had the sense to provide two easy chairs. Room was modern and spacious.
Food was good but I’d say the selection/variety might not survive a long stay.
The only downside is the very steep walk into town. If in any way frail this needs to be considered. There is a shuttle bus from the adjacent town car park but you might need to use your car, not ideal in a Cornish village.

I was given a voucher for my 70th birthday. I chose to use the voucher for afternoon tea, for myself and my husband, at the beautiful Fowey Hall in Cornwall.

I was so disappointed. I was expecting a crisp white tablecloth and excellent service from attentive staff as we had been used to in other hotels.

On arrival, the receptionist was friendly and went to find an appropriate staff member. This person took us to a room, which was nice enough except that it wasn’t just for afternoon tea. It was for anyone to use so people were milling around all the time.

She showed us to a small round occasional table (with no tablecloth) and two low armchairs. She didn’t offer to take our coats, she just said someone would be with you shortly. Someone did arrive to ask what tea we wanted and then two girls arrived with the three-tier stand of food and two teapots. Obviously, this wouldn’t all fit on our small table so they had to bring another small table to put next to ours for the teapots, jam and cream. That was the last we saw of any staff. No one came to ask if everything was alright. We left feeling very disappointed with the whole experience.

Really a nice hotel trip. Three days was perfect. Kids aged 8 and 10, and loved the breakfast, pool room, cinema and the pools. A really nice hotel to just chill in and allow the kids to have some freedom.
Our first holiday to Cornwall without needing to drive anywhere which was nice. Fowey town very nice and lots of lovely restaurants to enjoy. We particularly liked Havenars.
