“Expensive Views”
Reviewed 26 May 2012

On the good side: Lovely views of the harbour, friendly staff, good breakfast, but...
Awful beds (soft edges that you roll out of), bad attitude by the owner, old fashioned rooms, tiny shower room, difficult car park, limited evening access to Fowey due to ferry closing times, and very expensive for what you get.
One of our party was on her own but was charged full rate for a double room.
On asking for a special brandy, was told that they had the equivalent. I asked to try a tiny sip and was told by the owner "cheeky!" (not in a good way). It was not good so I settled for something else.
We avoided the place for meals and mainly just stuck out the booking.
The owners are selling up and retiring (June 2012) and they need to.
The place needs a refurb and a new attitude.

Room Tip: If you must stay there, have a harbour view. You overlook Daphne du Maurier's home.

Having Completed the 4 mile walk around the harbour,we stopped off at the Old Ferry Inn for a well earned beverage and light lunch before catching the Ferry over to Fowey. We had a lovely table seat outside in the sunshinee with a great view. The food was very nice indeed, as was the service from the young comic waiter. Will definitely be back!

I have to disagree with “Shabby but not Chic”. Certainly it was not “Chic” and yes is was probably a bit tired but our room was spotless and our bathroom (not en suite) was also very clean and towels changed when requested. The staff were lovely – especially Pete. I would go there again. Great value for money.

Our weekend away to celebrate my birthday was ruined. We paid £95 per night for room 7 what a con! Tired uninspiring room. Carpet in bathroom put us off straight away. There was no proper shower or shower curtain just a hand held shower contraption. The lampshade was broken and the curtains were stained. A constant drone all night presumably from kitchen kept us awake and to top it all there were hairs in the bath yukk! I discretely asked Royce (the owner) if he could clean the sink (also stained) and the bath for us, his response was: 'What, now?!' I replied 'Yes before we retire to bed.' Not the response I was expecting!
When we went to the room the bath was untouched, my partner went downstairs to ask him to come up to have a look. He came up saying he'd done the sink and hadn't heard me ask for the bath to be cleaned. At no stage did we receive an apology, he begrudgingly cleaned whilst we waited, we stated that most people would apologise and he then grunted an apology.
The service was poor the pub was poorly staffed and the food mediocre. The owner was most obnoxious. The dining room was souless with lots of printed signs giving the same instructions and orders.
We decided to cut short our stay and leave after one night, We told Royce of our intention to leave, to which he replied; 'I realised that,' snatched the key from my partner and walked away from us!
I suggest that unless you like tatty accomodation and downright rude staff you stay away!

Room Tip: Don't choose room 7 (tired, dirty, noisy) Go somewhere else

Stayed with another couple on a 2 night BB and Evening meal package, our room was right at the top in the newer section and had an amazing view from two aspects, one across to Polruan and the other looking across the river to Fowey. The deal was very good value the Pub was quiet and the food was excellent. I think the only downside was the ferry stopping early in the winter so that ruled out any evening visits to Fowey but for the two nights that was not a huge problem. I would recommend the coastal path to Polruan that starts just above the pub car park and could be made into a lovely round trip via the foot ferry to Fowey then back across the Bodinnick ferry stopping off at the various pubs along the way....ideal!

Four days with 11 others + baby and a dog for 80 year olds birthday family long weekend. November but a warm, cosy old fashioned Inn (pub) not a hotel, yet with residents' sitting room with fine views down the river past Fowey to the sea, a dining room with view across the river and ferry and a traditional pub bar. Straight forward pub food, decent beer. The proprietor went out of his way to help us: serving tea & birthday cake, opening up the dining room for the 12 of us for lunch and dinner, moving furniture, providing a cot, etc. And all at an excellent winter discount! We'll (all) be back!

Room Tip: ask for a river view

Just returned from 3 very pleasant nights at the Old Ferry Inn in Bodinnick with my partner and parents. This hotel remains a firm favourite of ours for a number of factors: the warm and friendly staff, the charming bar area filled with nostalgia and an open fire...and of course, the breath-taking views.

Proper Cornish ale behind the bar is also a solid plus! (No 'Proper Job' yet though...)

The bar is one of those places you can happily rest in, full of snugs, flag stone floors and cosy corners. The staff are available though usually hidden and are very happy to be summoned by a bell when you need them. The food is good and the portions are big and hearty, which is ideal if you've been walking around the surrounding area and building up an appetite. Breakfast is no exception.

We've found the treatment of guests here is second to none and above many of the stylistic B&Bs across the river. We accept that running such an extensive building means that the staff can't always get things right but they are always happy to remedy any problems if they arise; which is the reason we keep coming back.

We were on their winter deal, which makes visiting much more affordable and definitely recommended if you're travelling from afar.
