“Great Position with an over rated room”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 July 2013

This is an hotel in a fantastic position in a beautiful location.
Hotel rooms in Cornwall are small by nature but we had the Penthouse which came at a price, steep even by Cornwall Prime location standards and the bedroom was built into and among the rafters. So much so that the mattress was on the floor with no base and the only way into and out of the bed was to crawl as it was impossible to stand upright on either side of the bed.
The pictures on the website avoid this aspect of the room and only focus on the lounge which has a great view. Rather go for the Superior room and use the money elsewhere

Just returned form 2 wonderful days at this hotel which is highly recommended
Fantastic location with a terrace overlooking the stunning estuary
Attentive staff and nothing is too much trouble
The restaurant is fantastic and again in a stunning setting we had a lovely meal on the first night and it was excellent, really high standard.
Close to all amenities and the bistro next door is excellent too
Thanks for making my birthday celebration so special

Room Tip: Avoid room 3 as smell of cooking and temperature not good

This hotel, in the main narrow throughfare in delightful Fowey, was the base for my wife and I for a 4 night visit to Cornwall. From check-in to departure everything was superb. The reception staff were prepared and awaiting our arrival, allocating the room therefore was no problem and our bags were taken up the stairs for us. Our room was superb, with a small balcony looking out over the river and there was never any noise (other than the seagulls!)

The short walk to and from the car each day was not a problem, this to be expected given the narrow streets and restricted availability of parking. The spasmodic mobile phone signals also provide a welcome break!

The restaurant at the hotel was first class - locally sourced produce on a changing menu served with pride and the staff are to be commended for their attentive but unobtrusive service! The same area is used for the breakfast room, and the view through the doors over the river estuary is to die for (we were lucky that the weather was good though)!

The outdoor patio area, on the bank of the river, provided a great place for a drink each evening upon return to the hotel from the day's sightseeing.

Fowey itself is a very small town, but with a number of other restaurants and pubs with eating facilities within a very short walk from the hotel, the location and accommodation provides a top quality, luxurious base that will be difficult to beat whatever your likes!

Overall, the Old Quay House comes highly recommended for that quality break.

Just loved everything about this place. The hotel was right in the middle of this fantastic little town. The staff from check in to the restaurant were exceptional and the food in the restaurant was pretty good too. The rooms were beautiful and spacious with small balconies that looked out over the water. We didn't want to leave this place and would recommend the hotel unreservedly.

We stayed in the Old Quay House for two nights - the first I had spent in Cornwall - and had a really relaxing time. Although our room ( no 1) was not very big - the hotel is squeezed in tight in the center of the fishing village - it was a lovely room and the bathroom was actually quite spacious with a lovely bath. The dining room has a beautiful view out to the harbour - as will some of the bedrooms. It is worth booking a table in advance if you stay for dinner in order to get that view from your table. The food was very good indeed and so appealing that I had trouble deciding what to eat.By husband found the lounge a little unrelaxing - but that is not really a problem. We took a walk around the estuary, about which the staff can provide information - and Iwould recommend it as the views are wonderful , however there is a little hill climbing involved

Room Tip: If you want the view ensure that you book a room which looks out over the harbour.

Overall, we had an enjoyable stay at this hotel, which is not cheap, but on a good day the hotel and especially the staff have the potential to deliver an outstanding experience.

The hotel and restaurant staff were attentive, proactive and truly seemed to want to go that extra mile for us, their guests (like finding us a spare ipad charger) . The room was well presented, but small..

We had a few points that took the edge off our stay, especially, the fact that the hotel had a wedding reception at lunch time, but a number of those guest were still drinking outside in the evening which made the restaurant noisy and a regular flow of people walking through the restaurant I assume to go to the toilets. Our table was sadly by the entrance to the restaurant, so we had no view of the sea, which is the reason we stayed at the hotel for dinner but at least we were some distance from the noise outside (the food was good but we wished we had booked elsewhere in view of atmosphere).

There were a couple of examples where staff could have reacted quicker to requests - one was where I asked for a blanket when sitting outside having breakfast, but instead of going and getting the blanket immediately the member of staff cleared a table and then after a number of additional minutes appeared with a blanket, so I was significantly more cold before the blanket arrived. Also, a similar request for sauce at dinner was slow to be provided (had almost finished main course before it arrived).

On another occasion our request for ice in our room did not arrive, but when we chased this turned up very quickly with a free bottle of wine and the next morning when we checked out the receptionist explained the ice initially had been delivered to the wrong room - an excellent example of great service recovery, we all make mistakes it is how you recover that set the level of your customer service.

I provided the above feedback to the hotel in e-mail and was surprised they did not even acknowledge!

Overall, we enjoyed our stay, but the above took the edge off our visit and at the price reduced our desire to rush back.
