Recent deluges saturated the path up from Readymoney cove and made the going tricky. However the sun burst out at the top and the tiny fort sparkled.
Originally Henry VIII's doing, it has seen many changes of armament from Victorian to WW2 and then retro-restored.
None of which matters as you gaze across to Polruan, trying not to make machine-gun noises and embarass your children.

The walk to the castle is as interesting as the castle itself! You have to discover the steps up the cliff which lead from the tiny cove off the beach. It's enchanting and the views from the castle ruins are spectacular. A lovely way to while away an hour or so.

Worth the short trek up the ruins. Views are wonderful, you can carry on along the coast for a hike, or come back down to the beach.

You climb up to St. Catherine's Castle by using the steps from Readymoney Beach. It's actually on part of the coastal path that takes you to Gribbin Head and beyond - a lovely coastal walk. The castle (its little more than a large gun emplacement) protected the entrance to Fowey, which in its day was a strategically important harbour. The steps up to the top of the castle are unprotected. You get some wonderful views from the top.

Originally the harbour was also protected by two 'chain towers' - one at Polruan, which you can still see the ruins of, and one at Fowey which has now virtually disappeared. A chain was stretched across the bay and raised by a winding mechanism in the Polruan Tower to stop enemy ships entering the harbour. The harbour at Dartmouth had a similar chain protection system.

The castle is now managed by English Heritage although much of the coast here is owned by the National Trust. Below the castle is the beach at Readymoney Cove. We reached this by walking from the centre of Fowey along the Esplanade - which has some fine houses with wonderful views of Polruan across the bay.
