“Lovely old hotel in a great part of the world”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 August 2014

This is such a gorgeous place - steeped in history, it oozes old world charm from every beam. Don't come here if you like modern, sleek hotels. You won't get it. You'll get squeaky floorboards, sloping floors and low beams. However, it is also lovely and charming. Food was ok. I wouldn't rave about it but the staff are helpful and try their best to accommodate a fussy vegetarian.
All in all a lovely, old fashioned charming hotel.

Room Tip: We had a superior room in the old part of the hotel. Go for a room in the hotel if you want the real...

Dear Poppity22,
Thanks for taking time to leave a review on your recent stay with us at the Speech House.
I was delighted to read that you found the Speech House charming and that you enjoyed the ambience and history of the hotel.
I was pleased to read that you found our team attentive, we are fortunate in that all bar two of the
team come from the local area of the Forest.
We are certainly not a sleek melamine hotel but as you point out, historical, full of character and squeaky original floorboards, and our team do indeed work hard to attend to our guests requirements.
I have passed on your very positive comments to all of our team.
We look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.
Best wishes

We ate in the historic Verderers Court and had a most wonderful lunch. After our meal, Peter the owner gave us a talk about the role of the Verderers Court in former times, and its continued use in contemporary times.
We really enjoyed the talk, which completed a great lunch in a historic setting. Thanks to all the staff

This hotel is in the heart of the Forest of Dean with magnificent woodland areas to walk through and enjoy.

The hotel is a small venue with rooms in the main house and separate accommodation in an adjoining block. The staff are very helpful and polite and whether you go there for a lunch or a birthday or wedding celebration, your occasion will be managed by a capable team of professionals.

We attended a wedding there this weekend and everything was taken care of and ran like clockwork!

We stayed for a couple of nights last weekend for my husbands birthday. We had a four poster room in the courtyard, the room was a good size with a really comfortable bed and well appointed en-suite. Breakfast was in the Verderers' Court, an amazing room, there was a good choice of cereals, pastries and cooked. Overall a very enjoyable stay in a really peaceful setting -wish we could have stayed longer. My only negative point would be that it would have been good to have had WiFi in the room.

Room Tip: Four poster in the courtyard

Green Features: A solar tube in the entrance to the room which to start with we didn't realize it was solar and tried to find the light switch!

Dear CdljWicks,
Thank you for taking time to leave a review of your stay with us at the Speech House.
I am delighted to learn that you had a great stay with us and that you found everything to your satisfaction.
I appreciate your comment on the poor Wi Fi in the Courtyard rooms, and we are working to improve that challenge. The nature and thickness of the historic building presents a few IT issues but we are working on that. We have already spent circa £5k on the issues but do realise that it needs to be addressed further for the more distant rooms.
Yes the Verderers Court is an amazing historic room that holds many secrets from when it was first built as a hunting lodge for Charles II.
Thanks again for your very positive comments which have been passed on to all of my team.
Best wishes

Visited this hotel for one night only (shame it wasn't more!) for our wedding anniversary. We were delighted with our stay - a lovely comfortable room and facilities in a unique and fascinating setting. The food was amazing - one of the best meals we've ever had, with efficient and slick service. Breakfast was lovely too. We then went for a beautiful walk in the forest across the road (check out the amazing stained glass window in the middle of the forest!). Finished off our stay with a refreshing drink in the garden. Wish we could have stayed for longer - and that's saying something as we both travel a lot for business!

Picked the speech house mostly because it is dog friendly in good location. Stayed here for one night due to traveling from Ireland needed a break. Was overjoyed at the main house and area. Big field next to accommodation and plenty of woodlands to rome about in.room was abit like a small granny flat in the stables which had been done up to a good standard. Breakfast was in the main house was very nice and we had dinner in the bar also very nice. Would have like to have stayed another night.

A magnificent old building built in 1676 by the King as a 'court' where local people could have their say; regular verderers meetings are still held here to discuss the management of the vert and venison.

There are many old oak trees and some large beech trees alongside the car park and track.

You may join the circular Sculpture Trail from the car park. This is a magnificent forest trail, with water features where you may view large carp and much birdlife.

Woorgreens Nature Reserve is just a short walk away.

Dear 492 Dave P,
Thanks for leaving a review regarding the Speech House and your recent visit.
Apologies for the Forestry Commissions map being slightly vague but I know my team helped point you in the right direction as the Sculpture Trail can be joined right on the hotel doorstep.
We are indeed lucky to be custodians of this wonderful historic hotel and all within.
I am delighted you had a good stay and found the Forest truly amazing.
