“English seaside break at its best”
Reviewed 30 July 2012

We decided to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary at the Christchurch Harbour Hotel as we spent our honeymoon here when it was known as the Avonmouth Hotel. Upon arrival we were greeted as welcomed guests and were plesently surprised to be offered a room upgrade to a Gold room with private balcony and stunning views across the harbour. The restaraunt offered a fine choice of local produce well presented and very enjoyable. The Spa offers many treatments complimented by a superb gym, swimming pool, sauna and steam room. We were fortunate to benefit from the glorious summer weather that was long overdue and sipping champagne on the sun loungers looking out over the harbour, UK holidays at their finest. Overall, a smashing break with superb weather, bedroom, food and happy friendly service from all the staff we encountered. I hope its not another 25 years before we venture back to the Christchurch Harbour Hotel. Thank you & well recommended.

Room Tip: Room 217 with private balcony and superb views over the harbour.

I have just returned after a couple of days at the Christchurch Harbour Hotel & Spa, my partner wanted somewhere relaxing and somewhere to enjoy some Spa treatments, so here is my honest review of the good and not so good !!!

On the good side first..... this hotel has views to die for !, just so beautiful and relaxing.
The rooms are spotlessly clean and attention to detail has been given in it's design and materials used in the bathroom etc.
There are plenty of staff and must say, " All seemed happy with a smile on their faces ! "
When having a meal, the staff were aware of you, and seemed to appear just at the right times to clear your table, or to see what else you needed without being too overpowering.

Now the not so good !

On arrival, the check-in is just outside the General Managers room, which had it's door opened and inside looked like a disorganised storeroom ! Not a good start.
The quality of furnishings in the rooms as I have said " are very good " but the bed is NOT of the same standard, it is comfortable, and possibly the higher end of beds made for the hotel industry, but the top quality of these would only get 4 out of 10 compared with someone like Vi-Spring, and hotels like JFB or even Radisons would NEVER consider using open-coil sprung units in a 4 star premises, so if you ever want that fifth star then you will need to do your research into what real comfortable beds are about !
One of the main reasons for choosing this hotel was because it offered Spa treatments, so having arrived the very first thing we did was to try and book some treatments, only to be told, " Sorry we are fully booked for several days in advance, and unable to offer any during our stay "
So my advise is, before booking to make sure you are able to book Spa treatments.
When booking on line, you can book with breakfast and evening meal included !!! this is what we did, however then found you have a price limit on the evening meal of £30 which on the face of it, seems fine, until you look at the prices charged for the meals, way, way over the top, so then expect to pay a surcharge of about £10 on each meal.
To give an example for say the starter you wanted King Prawn salad, that's £8.95 and for this you will get it on a large wooden platter and consists of, just a little rocket salad, sauce, and on top of that just ONE king prawn, yes ONE (1) King prawn !!!, be it a large one, but once the head and shell is removed, it is now smaller than ones little finger.
The quality of the food in fairness, is good, the helpings seem to vary with whatever you order, so what the waitresses will do is, fill you up with bread, or else you would be hungry, and here I would add, the bread is fresh and tasty, so it compensates in some small way.
The prices of the drinks again are way over the top, a large house red wine, and a double Bacardi & Coke you will get little change out of £20.
This hotel has just so much going for it, but let down by the over-the-top prices it charges for it's food and drink, and again if every they want that fifth star, then they would loose it by not giving value for money, and that's what we the customer wants, so rethink here, and believe me by lowering these prices you WILL sell more, and more contented customers !
With breakfast, there is plenty of cereals, fruit, and continental items to choose from, all fresh and tasty, and they also offer a "Full English" and this the area I found the fell down, as when I asked for a Full English less the tomato and Black pudding, when my breakfast arrived, it did not contain these items (great) but it also did not contain my hash brown or slice of bacon, not sure if the fault of the waitress or cook, and similar on other days, so maybe the waitress would be better of at breakfast time with a pre printed list of the Full English and only tick off the items not required, just a thought !
There is an indoor swimming pool, hot tub etc, however on hot days it would be so nice to have an outdoor hot tub to enjoy in the sun, this is not a complaint, but just a thought for the future !
So that's about it, this hotel has just so much going for it, just such a relaxing location, like all people we don't mind paying extra for quality, but to always remember, there is a limit people will pay for quality, as there are a lot more similar places always ready to welcome the business

We only visited this hotel for a day spa so cannot comment on the rooms.

We all had a wonderful day. The lunch was lovely. Beautiful terrace. The staff were very attentive.

The spa was a great size for a spa day. All the areas were clean and tidy. On arrival it all got a bit busy but one we were all changed the crowds soon dispersed.
My treatment was lovely and the therapist was very friendly. We can't wait to go back.

I stayed here with my daughter for three nights as a celebration for her graduating from university. I was very clear that I wanted a full harbour view and wow was it worth it. Room 523 was a fabulous twin bedded room with wonderful views to match. Having access to a spa was also one of our requirements and we had 2 spa treatments each which were rejuvenating and relaxing and we found the spa with it's friendly staff well worth the visit. Breakfasts each morning on the terrace; we could have been in the South of France, dinner in the restaurant one night and Sunday Lunch another day were all delicious, beautifully presented and served by staff who were professional, courteous and keen to please. We made good use of the loungers in the grounds to soak up the sun and did a couple of local walks as well as a day trip to Bournemouth. The hotel delivered what it said it would and I thank them for that. Yes, the Christchurch Harbour Hotel is in deed truly delightful and a very special place.

Room Tip: You get what you pay for and the hotel is very clear on what price gets what. To get the full harbou...

Stayed here for 2 nights for my friends hen party. Beautiful hotel in lovely location. Great welcome on arrival, room was spotless and very big. Our room was above the kitchen but this didn't spoil sleep quality at all, the bed is very comfortable, with very good quality duvet and pillars, very comfortable. Great shower in the room, large and very clean. We dined both nights in the hotel restaurant. The restaurant is very busy and deservedly so, the food was excellent and great for seafood and fish lovers. Service from all staff throughout was exceptional, friendly and professional and especially so in the restaurant. The breakfast was really good and with a very good continental selection and hot food a la carte choice. The spa was very good with a great range of treatments from friendly therapists. I would definitely recommend this hotel for a lovely break where you will feel that you have had a lovely treat.

My husband I got married at The Christchutch Harbour Hotel on Sunday and I must say it was a day to remember. The staff were brilliant, especially Chris - he was very professional and organised and ensured the day ran smoothly (he is a credit to the hotel). There was also the lovely Sher who was very polite, helpful and friendly. Lastly Sophie who helped arrange our wedding, what a nice girl and ensured our day was a magical day (which it was). I can not praise these members of staff enough - well done to you all and thank you for making our wedding day a day we shall never forget, BRILLIANT!! :-)
Not forgetting our stay at the hotel, whilst we did not get to experience our room much, the time we did spend in it was lovely. We had a gold room overlooking the grounds and out to the harbour with our own balcony, it was great and we shall be coming back soon.
Overall a great venue and I would highly recommend you to all my friends and family.

Arrived Sunday afternoon & car park jammed. Oh dear!. We feared a wake or wedding overwhelming staff and facilities at the expense of other guest, the very reason we stopped going to the Miramar in Bournemouth. Our fears were unfounded. Plenty of staff to assist both in reception and with luggage and to serve afternoon tea. Cleverly the hotel has been configured to handle functions in such a way they do not impose or intrude. In fact the presence of a wedding party added to the atmosphere but then they were well behaved and unusually no screaming kids running around. The room was immaculate, not huge but perfectly acceptable for a couple of nights. Staff here are very well trained, attentive but not fawning and the dining experience and quality of food was more high class restaurant than mass catering. This is our third visit and we intend to return many times..
A delight to find a hotel that does not use a stunning location with lovely views as a smokescreen to short change guest on quality and standards.
