“Lovely Spa Day”
Reviewed 22 March 2014

Just returned from our spa day at Christchurch harbour hotel. What a pleasant day we have had. From the start welcomed by a friendly receptionist who provided us with a print out of our day and towel robe an slippers, who also talked us around the facilities. Firstly we headed to the gym which was just enough for what we needed and was a great start to the day. Then the best part of our day, the treatments! Special mention to Megan who was my friends therapist for a full body massage. My friend said Megan was very friendly and gave clear instructions on how to prepare for the treatment and said her massage was amazing! Another special mention to Georgia who was my therapist but I chose to have a facial instead which i thoroughly enjoyed, my concerns were talked through and Georgia explained what products would be good for my skin, we were both so relaxed after so thank you girls! Followed by our treatments we just wanted to chill out so went into the relaxation room which was heaven, comfy loungers n lovely lighting could of easily drifted off to sleep! We had afternoon tea booked in a short while so we went to use to pool facilities which we were impressed with and surprisingly wasn't too overcrowded which we did wonder being a Saturday, the spa has children swim times limited so you can avoid noisy children if you want to! We used the pool sauna and jacuzzi and seats by pool, there was also a (steam room and salt room)only criticism was would of been nicer if jacuzzi
was warmer. After using facilities we were taken to upper deck restaurant for our afternoon tea which was yum! Very polite and attentive staff there too. Overall we had a very enjoyable day, would definitely return and recommend to friends. Thank you spa team

Picturesque location, friendly staff and relaxing spa facilities - enjoyable stay and appreciated free upgrade because we advised them it was a special occasion (our 10th anniversary. Only grumble would be the breakfast size and availability - perhaps go early if you want the full selection!

I booked this as a little treat for myself. Just a one night stay. It was easy to find check in was easy and the receptionist made sure we had all the information we needed. We had a couple of cocktails in the bar area and a very lovely salmon bagel. Headed to the spa for a treatment. The spa area isn't big we were lucky we were the only ones in there. It was ver clean and had everything we needed. We stayed in room 523 which was just perfect very comfortable beautiful views over the harbor. It is there most expensive room but it was worth every penny. I will be staying again it was a lovely restful peaceful stay.

Been there four times now and looking forward to our next visit, this hotel is a pure delight. The service is faultless, The tall young man who welcomes guests at the door should have a special mention, he puts a smile on your face before even entering. The rooms are very pleasant if possible take a sea view room it`s really worth it. The food is excellant and add to this an excellant spa who could ask for more. A really well run hotel.

Room Tip: take a sea view room

I don't know where to begin - few positives. Our whole experience is summed up in the attached photo of the brochure-promised "garden view" from our room. Slack attention to detail, appalling room service for breakfast, broken assurances from hotel management, rude inattentive bar and restaurant staff.

I was very sorry to read that you felt the Hotel to be outdated.

Over the last year the Hotel has seen great investment with a fantastic new Restaurant and Bar, modernised lounge areas, some refurbished bedrooms and a stunning new reception area.

We are very proud of our onging changes and will continue to make improvements to bedrooms and other areas of the Hotel as time permits.

I was also very sorry to hear that you found the restaurant and bar staff to be rude. We normally recieve such great comments about our staff.

Thank you for your feedback

The hotel itself is beautifully kept. I would like to commend the hotel chain for making this hotel feel like a well kept independent hotel, not plastic hotel chain finishings. The decor of this hotel was 5 star.

Sadly though the whole experience is really messed up by lack of understanding of what paying customers are wanting out of their stay. If you stay on a weekend you are likely to encounter a wedding. The staff I spoke with said they have at least one wedding each weekend. The hotel really should do more to keep weddings and hotel guests separate. On arrival the whole entrance is teamed with wedding guests out on the narrow steps leading up to reception smoking away. A porter very sweetly came to our car and helped us in with bags and to navigate past the wedding guests and we needed him to provide crowd control past tattoo clad, beer swilling wedding guests. Sadly this was not our only encounter with the wedding party, they spent hours meandering around the reception areas. They had one room which they were allocated for the wedding breakfast and clearly having paid thousands for their wedding reception wanted to ensure they had use of the hotel. The hotel need to provide a separate wing of the hotel away from the main areas for wedding guests, be that in the separate restaurant by the water edge or some other part. We continued to encounter further experiences with drunk wedding guests noisily entering their bedrooms late at night, and using the corridor as a gathering point outside one anothers bedrooms including our own room. Again the hotel could eliminate this issue is they just provided one wing of hotel bedrooms for wedding guests.

The hotel seem to forget completely the needs of other paying guests when the weddings are taking place. The reception staff while lovely could do nothing to place us elsewhere in the hotel away from the wedding party as all the rooms had been allocated and there were no reserve bedrooms available in case of problems.

The bedrooms had lovely toiletries were well stocked and furniture lovely. In such a hotel though, I would expect super king beds, or two twins pushed together. The beds were advertised as 'kingsize' but looked like doubles to me. I ended up sleeping on the floor as the bed was too soft and found ourselves rolling into one another.

Despite booking a 'deal package' the weekend cost over £500 for two nights and dinner and breakfast. Although dinner is limited to a set cost and really just the cost of one main course, and if you are careful with your selection a pudding if you are careful with your selection. They also tried to charge us another £100 due to the restaurant trying to charge us for someones meal. We had to provide evidence that the food was not ours, which was tricky and felt like an interrogation.

Breakfast was tasty but very slow. You have to be shown to a table then someone different will offer tea and toast, and someone different entirely will take your cooked order, but they were always been sought by the waiting staff. Juices were served on the bar counter in glass bottles in chilling bowls, but they were high up and clunky, would be much better just to have them readily available on the side.

The food both at breakfast and dinner is worthy of a mention, it was delicious, and the chef deserves enormous praise. The waiting staff however should be asked to remove their noses from up in the clouds and treat guests as an important means to obtaining their salaries and treat them equally. They are slow and choose who to spend time with. They had a favoured few guests who are either regulars or local who they treat like royalty. Given the best tables, served first. The other dinner guests would just get up and walk out without signing their meals to their rooms because service was painfully slow.

Loud music booms from the bar area of the restaurant and is not suitable for a calm restaurant with a piano in the corner. Perhaps they should invite aspiring pianists to come to play or just pipe piano tunes through the speakers instead of clubbing music. It totally missed the atmosphere it was meant to be setting.

The restaurant should offer high tea for guests with children. We came away for a break away from our children, and thankfully so as I would not have been happy bringing them into the restaurant, the service was slow, and guests with children spent the time divided with one eating and the other taking the children outside of the restaurant to amuse them. It was not set up to receive younger guests, so an option should be made available for families to have an earlier sitting with suitable meal options available for the children but also meal options for the parents, a time from 5:30 - 7pm would I am sure be suitable.

The spa does seem to be to be a bit of a stretch of the imagination. They have a pool and they have some treatments they offer, but in terms of being able to sit and relax all day, that is tricky, they have just a few sun beds by the pool, the two shoe horned into a cupboard in the waiting room for the treatments and then a couple of other beds in a room that is opened at certain times. Not quite the spa I was hoping to set off for with my hotel robe for a day of relaxation.

All in all, if you are looking for a well kept hotel, this is definitely the place to go, but in terms of understanding what it is guests are looking for when they check in for a spa break I think the hotel have missed a few of the basic needs of a guest.

Either make yourselves a weekend only wedding venue, and don't take other paying guests, or move the weddings to another place in the hotel and offer high tea to families. Please also think about the training of the waiting staff at dinner.

Room Tip: Ask for twin beds pushed together and for water view

We have stayed here before and liked the special offer they do over the weekends.
Offer includes room, breakfast and £60 towards dinner.
We stayed in a suite which just overlooked the sea and although it was huge it was pretty basic. The room was very clean and extremely comfy. All mod cons and bathroom was immaculate, but only had a shower.
The dinning and breakfast area overlook the Christchurch bay, so try and get a window seat or if it’s warm enough sit outside. Breakfast is cooked to order so it’s always fresh and hot, or you can have the continental breakfast which you help yourself too.
We had dinner in the Jetty because the hotel restaurant was full. So if you want to eat in the the hotel book early. But to be on honest we prefer the Jetty. Much better. Dinner was very nice and service was excellent. The Manager really tried to make our evening great.
The hotel has a lovely swimming pool, steam room, sauna, jacuzzi and gym. All very nice and up to date. The only problem was that because of the offer the hotel were doing, it was packed and because of this people seemed to think it was ok to leave there towels spread everywhere. It looked like a hotel laundry.
Didn’t find much to-do in the area, but if you like walks there is a footpath that walks along the sea front. There you will find various fish stalls, cafés and the mudford ferry that serves fish & chips on board. www.mudefordferry.co.uk/
Now as we've stayed here before I can see that they had refurbished much of the hotel, and what a great job they have done. However, they have missed something. Still no air conditioning. I would love to stay here in the summer but having stayed here once before in the summer I know how hot the rooms get. Having access to a fan isn't really good enough in hotel like this.
We will return as its a great place to have a break and enjoy good food.
My thanks to Matt and all the staff who very friendly and a pleasure to deal with. Keep up the good work.
