“Superb meal”
Reviewed 10 August 2014

Having not been to the captains club for a few years now and being local we thought we would give it a go
The meal service and ambiance was superb and yes it's at the top end of the market but as they say you get what you pay for.The whole place was buzzing with a great atmosphere .Thanks to you all .

“Lovely setting”
Reviewed 9 August 2014

We ate lunch on the terrace overlooking the river watching the boats go by. Service was attentive and friendly and the food was very nice. I was surprised to have to hand over my credit card for safekeeping but I understand that they have had some very bad experiences with dishonest customers. Next time I will probably pay cash upfront for my meal.

“Rather Disappointing Afternoon Tea”
Reviewed 7 August 2014

This was my second afternoon tea out this summer (first one was at a Bournemouth hotel) and this one didn't come anywhere near the Bournemouth one. The Captains Club restaurant itself is nice enough and the staff friendly and chatty, but the thing that let the tea down was the thin slices of bought in cakes - a thin slice of Battenburg is not exactly enticing and the sandwiches had also been made for a while and were somewhat dry. If I had been paying myself for the tea I would have complained, but very awkward to complain when you are in a large group and someone is treating you. I obviously wouldn't make a return trip.

““Absolutely superb!””
Reviewed 7 August 2014

Four of us turned up on speck and were made very welcome. The hotel had a lovely atmosphere and was nice and busy. The attentive staff greeted us and escorted us to choose a free table. We choose to have drinks overlooking the river sat in lovely wooden loungers on the deck. As the sun went down we moved into the lounge bar and had a fabulous meal. The ‘Tear’n’share’ smoked salmon portion was huge and we also grazed on the charcuterie for starters. For main we enjoyed whole local crab, salmon fishcakes and Club burgers, all delicious.
Can’t understand why anonymous reviewers are upset about leaving a credit card as a guarantee, this is common practice in many establishments.

“This has lost its charm”
Reviewed 6 August 2014

We last visited Captains Club in early May and had a delicious Club sandwich outside on the terrace. How things have changed! There's now an Eastern Euoropean dragon lady waiting at the hotel entrance even if you just want to go in for a drink. We had a table booked in the restaurant for 10 people but we wanted to meet up & have an aperitif in the bar which seemed to cause her great consternation!! The waiters serving our drinks were smiley & efficient and all went well until we asked "Dragon lady" if we could look at the menus prior to our luncheon. She glared and said "your table is in the restaurant not here". At this point we all nearly walked out especially as some of our group had been unable to park due to a large delivery van blocking the car park. Anyway we moved to the restaurant and ordered; foregoing starters as it took so long for anyone to come and take our orders. Wine eventually arrived although the wine waitress didn't seem to know how to divide a bottle between a few people. 75 minutes later our mains finally arrived!! Several of us had sea bass served on samphire which was delicious (although the lobster mash) was lukewarm but we all felt the portion sizes at £16.95 were very small. One of our group had risotto which was such a small portion he complained and was given a complimentary portion of cauliflower cheese. We had to forego desserts as people were running out of car parking time and just ordered coffees. Even this took ages and two people were missed out. I understand it can be difficult catering for a group of 10 but the restaurant wasn't busy and it shouldn't be a problem for a hotel of this calibre. We won't be returning until the desk at the door is removed and it will just be for a drink/snack not a restaurant meal.
