“Heronshaw House”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 February 2012

My partner and I stayed here for one night as a birthday treat with acitivites planned for the next day.
This place is a must for anyone looking for a relaxing and quiet get away. A beautiful house in beautiful surroundings. It's a lovely place to be on a warm summer night, with a bottle of wine out on the patio.
We felt very spoilt with the food we had, and I know that it wouldn't be to everyone's taste but the hosts really fussed over us which was perfect as this was a treat! We felt as though the whole place was ours, and they simply couldn't do enough for us.
This is a great place for a foodie to go, each course was explained in the way that ony someone who has a real passion for food can. Presumably they were in the restaurant business previously.
I have to mention the bathroom also - I believe they must have recently had a refurb when we stayed because out bathroom was just stunning. A massive open shower that could have fit about 8 people in it.
I can't think of a negative for this place really other than if you are looking for the typical hotel then this isn't it - we didn't have a tv in our room (we wouldn't have wanted one anyway) but depending on what your looking for the lack of television may not suit you.
It is near the airport - but this didn't effect us.

Whilst the proprietors' enthusiasm is to be applauded, we found it just a tad too intrusive. The bedrooms aren't what we, as seasoned travellers, would call "luxurious" more "simple and relaxed" with damp patches all too evident and bathrooms with more than a hint of DIY about them. The plumbing was very noisy and caused a few titters as the pump got going every time a loo was flushed or a shower turned on.

We could have survived without the detailed description of each and every breakfast item. Yes, we get the picture - you produce it all yourselves with the help of your free range pigs, chickens and veg plot, but we don't need a detailed description of how every item is plucked, prepped and put in front of you!

The hotel is in a beautiful setting and the food is good, but the hotel is lacking in the cool professionalism and touches that could make it a luxury hotel. The proprietors were very welcoming and willing and it was great to be introduced to all of their dogs individually and learn how each one was named... but we won't be going back.

If it was £50 a night cheaper we'd be saying "Brilliant!" As it is, it's not worth the money.

"Simple and relaxed" takes an awful lot of professionalism to achieve and perhaps if they had stayed longer they may have seen that, but, coming down and going out to a party returning late, sleeping then breakfasting and leaving does not give you much chance.

Natural food beautifully presented is our philosophy and we make no apologies for talking about that. Obviously the party the night before was too good to appreciate the finer aspects of freshly squeezed orange juice and freshly cut fruit in the morning with the provenance of home grown produce, and, perhaps the uptight remote hotelier with bought in bread and trays of battery hen eggs is what these people want, except, they still wanted to know about our pedigree Working Cocker Spaniels, so, perhaps, hopefully, not.

As they said, " Lovely" and "Brilliant" , so it is really only a matter of subjective judgement as to the value one places on those.

Never mind whether you are leaving dear old England and need somewhere special to stay, and also have your car looked after, or have a very special occasion to celebrate look no further. For us it was a case of not going overseas but having an outstanding celebration for a special birthday near the New Forest in the most wonderful old Georgian House with fantastic food and our wonderful hosts. Can highly recommend this for what every reason. A hidden gem near the New Forest

Room Tip: Book early for front rooms looking towards River
